It supposed to work perfectly, there is nothing wrong with the electrum wallet if you downloaded it from electrum.org and verified it. Hope you downloaded it from electrum.org?  Did you dwnload the Windows Installer version for easy access?

What to do to get a working version?
For easy access, the Windows Installer version is the best for windows, it will automatically be installed on your computer.

You could use portable version as a test, but after you found out the problem in your system I advise the installer.
Officially Electrum should work fine on Windows 7+, if you have all the updates made, but I didn't use Electrum with older OS so I can't tell.
However, you asked about previous versions. On the download page there's a link to previous releases: https://download.electrum.org/
Just make sure you don't go back to anything before 3.3.4

Probably not the issue but it's worth a try. It's not running when you check your task manager is it? Did you check your Toolbar if it's minimized by any chance?

I will not advice for the old versions. But, to your question, you will click on Electrum-4.0.8.0-arm64-v8a-release.apk to get the file to be downloaded. Click on the version you want, and click on .apk for the download.

Im confused. Isnt that one for Android users?

For windows
For Standalone Executable, it is .exe
For Windows Installer, it is setup.exe

There are 3 windows different format of Electrum, and in the previous version you can find all those 3:

Just as listed in the Electrum download page:

https://electrum.org/#download

The difference is that the file electrum-4.0.8-setup.exe is the windows installer.
The     electrum-4.0.8.exe file is a Standalone executable, no installation need.
And there is also a third windows version electrum-4.0.8-portable.exe, which is the Portable one (to put in a portable drive or USD)

Personally, I use the standalone version. I do not like to install things.

Yes, APK files are for android users, you should not download it.

If you have put an Electrum portable into a new folder, ran it and still doesn't start, even after win reboot, to make sure you don't have anything old hanging in the memory, then I'd say that something is missing/unexpected in your OS.
And in that case your best choice could be the Electrum dev(s) https://github.com/spesmilo/electrum/issues

It's for compatibility for the older versions of Windows when running Electrum.

Thank you I will try and see if i have these installed already or not.
I do updates regularly but might be possible these havent been done.

I have donloaded and restored back the 3.3.8 version and it works.

Have missed out on a lot of work already cause of this and going to continue the update process some other time.

I had that issue before but that's on an older build of Windows10, nonetheless, that's a newer OS than yours.
As far as I can remember, it worked before in the previous build but a change in GPU (of course its driver) caused the issue. I simply updated to a later build '1709' and Electrum opens normally.

My workaround at that time was to run Electrum from source through python, but I'd suggest you to just upgrade your OS if the links of the updates in above reply didn't work.

I really hope that they will though as so many users apsolutely hate win10 cause the updates dont ask to be updated and just decide to get on with it regardless if youre busy doing something or not.

my unclaimed BCH and BTG and all those coins wont be afected by the wallet restoring i did?
Those can all still be claimed at a later time when i get around to the hassle of emptying the wallet first for security reasons?

Yes, they won't be affected. You will need to use your recovery phrase in wallets supporting these two coins anyway.

Those can all still be claimed at a later time when i get around to the hassle of emptying the wallet first for security reasons?

Correct.

All the transaction history etc is stored on the blockchain... unless the blockchain disappears or you lose access to your private keys, then your coins are going to be just fine Wink As far as the private keys are concerned, as long as you have your 12 word Electrum seed (or a copy of the wallet file and the wallet password), you'll be able to recover those.

It might be a bit of a hassle, but have you considered upgrading to Windows 10? Huh While the offer "officially" expired... I am fairly certain you can still get the upgrade for free. Wink (note that the story was revised in Jan 2021!)

Oh thank you for this article.
Might consider doing this.

Do you know if it would also work for my old laptop running on Windows XP?

I never attempted to update from XP -> 10 direct... and I don't think it is actually possible. Everything I did was Windows 7 -> 10, and my understanding is that you need Windows 7 as a minimum starting point. So, I believe the trick was to go WinXP -> Win7 (or Win8 etc) -> Win10 (https://www.zdnet.com/article/how-to-migrate-from-windows-xp-to-windows-10-in-8-reboots-or-less/)... noting that you need a "spare" Windows 7 or Windows 8 license to do this.

Also, if it's an older laptop with WinXP, there is a good chance that it might not meet the minimum system requirements for Windows 10... check those and make sure your laptop is capable.
