<snip>..... Gambling is illegal in Bangladesh, but these people were arrested for fraud and cheating, and not for taking part in gambling.
Thanks for clarifying this issue, so many opinion on this thread are outright off track, becasue some said in India while others said in Bangladesh but with this simple note; these boys were arrested for fraud and should be made to face the consequences of their actions. Trying to game the system isn't good for this industry and won't support any.

The news is quite interesting to me because the gamblers are so much tricky that they use live match for batting in different countries by visiting the playground and used the time in betting. Because it becomes live after finishing the ball, so they used that time in betting at staying in the field.

In Bangladesh, all types of gambling is prohibited and considered as crime, cryptocurrency too. They will be charged due to violation of the law. The news published by Dhakatribune. The News link is here,
https://www.dhakatribune.com/sport/cricket/2021/02/07/three-indians-arrested-over-illegal-betting-in-zacs

We can't blame people who are breaking the law because gambling is prohibited in their country. It's just too much that they see it as a crime wherein gambling was initially made for entertaining people. I also belive in the idea that it was possibly an inside job. If that's Bangladesh's law, they have no choice but to pay for what they have violated.

I don't know how harsh the Indian laws are, but I think this particular case will be a show trial.
They were caught in Bangladesh and not in India and they have a strict ban on gambling while in India online gambling is a grey area.
~
Thank you for the correction. Of course Bangladesh, not India.
Do you have any information on what punishment guys might face for breaking into a stadium during a ban on mass gatherings due to a pandemic?
From what i understand which i saw online they will be fined a minor amount of 100 Taka which is less than two dollar and an imprisonment of one month as per the laws and it is nothing big for someone who have the audacity to travel to Bangladesh and trying to take advantage of the telecast delay and then somehow manage to enter the stadium when audience are not allowed  Grin.

I am afraid that they won't be able to get away with a 100 Taka fine. That is the penalty for going out without a mask or defying the social distancing norms. These guys were trying to cheat gambling sites and the amounts involved is quite large. I won't be surprised if they get some sort of prison term. And the nationality is going to be another problem. Coming to Bangladesh with a tourist visa, and indulging in this sort of behavior won't be taken lightly by the court.

I am not support illegal gambling but I am laughing how stupid these gamblers must be to get caught when they could have made an account on any crypto sportsbook, make their bets, cash their winnings and without even being tracked. But maybe they don't know about crypto betting.

There was a funny statement in the article "We are also investigating how they were able to go to the stadium when spectators are banned" which clearly means some way or the other there are legal authorities being involved too.

Talking about betting and cricket, there have been 2 massive upsets in the Bangladesh vs West Indies cricket series and the anti-corruption team might want to check the results and do some research because the results are quite strange and the way Bangladesh lost raised a lot of eyebrows. I am not accusing their team and players but worth a check.

Bangladesh is just a part of Asia and is closer to India, I don't think coming to a neighbor county is that bad especially if they have already entered to the stadium as a guest/audience then that means they have some legal papers already. The only illegal that they have been doing is to cheat during the betting plus in their country gambling is illegal I don't know how their laws work but maybe they will get a fine or something and enough prison time.

The interesting news here isn't that they're committing an offence - it's the fact that sportsbooks don't have risk mitigation strategies in place to prevent these things?

It's 2021, goddammit. Surely they can price in a margin of error in their odds or alternative sources for scores that report back in real-time for live bets.

I remember this happening a good two decades ago. To have this happen now is simply inexcusable.

Although these guys were caught, I strongly suspect that this may not be the first time that they are engaging in this sort of fraud. But it shows the incompetence of the sportsbooks as well. Before the pandemic, fans were allowed in to the stands legally. Back then, these guys could have made their bets in a perfectly legal manner, and made huge amount of money in profits. If the sportsbooks were unaware of the lag between live match and cricket coverage, then they don't deserve to be in the business.

It is good that the government started to look in the big picture of arresting anybody that having illegal businesses in gambling. Many people always look in tge picture of gambling will always be illegal and bad for people. These three Indian might not be newbie in their field because as we all know they might be only one of those who have known fraud in gambling. And I guess they always be having some thought of doing it at first and end up doing it. And I agree to the idea that these Indians once playing legal manners yet because of greed, they started to do some illegal manners. And I think theg deserve to be caught.

some replies are off because the post of the author is really confusing . others will say india because theres a word india in the title and in the opening post there was a bangladesh country used , add in the fact that many people mistaken that these two countries are same but google says they are different . on the op's post he also said that the three guys are betting , they are gambling but both gambling in restricted country and fraud/cheating are not acceptable and punishments shall be face for the offenders .

The title says that they were arrested for "illegal gambling", when that is not the case. Gambling is illegal in India also, but millions of Indians take part in online gambling. And I haven't heard of any incident where those participating in these online gambling games were penalized. What happened here is much different and it will be wrong to link these crimes with gambling.

"The BCB accused them of betting through digital means inside the stadium. They were formally arrested today," said Hasan Imam, a senior Chittagong police officer.

the police still accuse? means they are not certain they are involved with the accusations raised.

BCB said they would be going into investigation on how they penetrated when spectators are banned.
This is still a question because of course the stadium will be closely guarded unless the three are working with one of the stadium employees to get inside.  hufftt for me, this news seems written carelessly.
Agreed. It is not as easy as the "headlines" suggests. People can't just go inside a stadium where International matches are being held. Going inside is one thing, going inside and getting a clear advantage over other sportsbooks is another. Which isnt possible either. It literally takes milliseconds to update the score and there is always a representative from a sportsbook present at the location updating the score. Lets say in real time, a 4 was being hit. the ball is still on the way to the boundary. At this moment, sportsbooks pause the betting and only unpause when a result is declared and change the odds accordingly for accepting any future bets. There are still chances when the representative messes up but you have to be alert throughout the match to find that one error(lets just say the scorer updated the score as 4 while it was a 6 and the odds moved accordingly). There isnt any real advantages there either.

The interesting news here isn't that they're committing an offence - it's the fact that sportsbooks don't have risk mitigation strategies in place to prevent these things?

In other words they asked for it.When they knew that in Bangladesh is forbidden any kind of gambling, their only choice was a VPN and cryptocurrency betting and they did not choose this.Any other option for them would have led them to arrest one time which unfortunately did.The lesson to be learned here is to only use tools which don’t compromise your freedom when betting in a country like Bangladesh where gambling is not allowed.
Gambling is still prevalent even if the country or the municipality prohibits it, the government underestimates the spirit of people that want to gamble, they will defy laws even if it is against their religion. I hope that this news sends waves to the people from Bangladesh that the rule of law is absolute and that they should follow it. The reason that they got caught is they might have been sloppy of their work and things slip up which lead to their arrest.

Yeah, the nationality will be a big issue. By the time this could also cause external affairs issue. In their own country this will not be dealt with high concern, but the same will be taken additional priority by the cross country issues. In other terms most of the time people located around the border region holds the citizenship of both India and Bangladesh.

some replies are off because the post of the author is really confusing . others will say india because theres a word india in the title and in the opening post there was a bangladesh country used , add in the fact that many people mistaken that these two countries are same but google says they are different . on the op's post he also said that the three guys are betting , they are gambling but both gambling in restricted country and fraud/cheating are not acceptable and punishments shall be face for the offenders .
The title says that they were arrested for "illegal gambling", when that is not the case. Gambling is illegal in India also, but millions of Indians take part in online gambling. And I haven't heard of any incident where those participating in these online gambling games were penalized. What happened here is much different and it will be wrong to link these crimes with gambling.
millions of people continue playing and no one get caught yet ? how come , or maybe online forms of gambling are allowed but those that are live/offline are illegal and anyone caught are going to have a bad time .

indeed that they should link other crimes into gambling because gambling reputation are going to get damage more evenly because its already been damage before due to fake claims by unkowledgeable people/gamblers .

Even if they think that playing gambling, whether gambling in the casino or traditional gambling, is fun, they do not have to try that. They should think about the risk and the consequences that they can get by playing gambling. If they do not want to lose the money, they must stay away from playing gambling, even in the legal casino (if there is any). It is better to search for a job that can give them to make money by receiving the payment daily or weekly rather than making money from gambling, which they can not always get.

Yeah, some people will not let them go and will put these people to their doomed. Thankfully they've given another chance to change themselves. As you can see, people won't take any second thought as soon as they see any bug on the game because it's now or never opportunity. Maybe those guys have been lost many times playing gambling that's why they came back with their plan to beat the game but unfortunately, their plan wasn't successful and they made their way to jail. poor guys just wanted to do some revenge.

Any undocumented gambling of all sorts will definitely receive a heavy hand from the government, and it's not only in Bangladesh that gamblers are condemned, most countries who facilitate illegal gambling do. Cannot really blame these guys for dreaming big but can't blame the government either for arresting and prosecuting them.

Yeah, the nationality will be a big issue. By the time this could also cause external affairs issue. In their own country this will not be dealt with high concern, but the same will be taken additional priority by the cross country issues. In other terms most of the time people located around the border region holds the citizenship of both India and Bangladesh.
How can this situation be termed as an external affairs issue between two countries if gamblers are caught and moreover they have a strict law on gambling as per the above users and hence it will not be diverted like that. What is the punishment they will be getting if they have the evidence, but if they are caught unlawfully then it will be an external affairs issue.
