ETH is the second valuable coin and most people prefer investing in this coin. ETH price is currently 1.5k, if BTC keeps price increasing, ETH will not stop. As you know ETH is influenced by the BTC movement. If you are looking for a long-term investment project, ETH is the best choice, l agree with that. Top altcoins have always been most popular about long-term investment. Indeed there are other projects which can be successful in the future. However, you should spend a lot of time finding them. But for me top altcoins have more potential, on the other hand, they have been proven. It is no exaggeration to say that mostly ETH has made happy own investors.

For now polka dot looks like the most innovative project in the market so my vote will be for it, i can not predict how high the price of dot will go but i have really positive vibes about it.

Polkadot is really one of the most promising projects out there at the moment but you need to keep in mind that it already did at least x10 since it was listed on exchanges compared to otc days it probably did more than 50x so the question is, if you are already late to the party if you join now.
And OP asked for a project with a marketcap below 500 M USD. Maybe radix is something for you OP, it's also running at it's own blockchain soon and it's marketcap is only slightly above 500 M$.

good luck! my suggestion? try to build a portfolio that contains altcoins with a roadmap, community, developers . Don't put your money at risk with some high yielding coin (more 10-15% of staking reward it means strong inflation). Be ready to switch/ change some coins at a certain point. It can be a good idea for maximizing profit and make a cash-out.
below 500 million it's a bit risk to put money, most of project in long term get a negative profit.... personally I will build a portfolio like:
Eth - Iost - Stellar - Atom - Dot - Loopring - Waves - Ampl - Monero

Why do you want to hold the coins that we do not know if that can be good in the long-term instead try to invest in bitcoin? I think it is enough to hold just bitcoin for a long term than to use the other coins because the altcoins or tokens will follow bitcoin price. But the question will be, how long you want to hold the altcoins or tokens as your long-term investment?

But maybe I can suggest investing in ethereum, bnb, ada, ltc for the long term, especially if you can buy the coins at a low price. All of those coins already increase. So you need to wait for some time before you can start to invest in those coins. It's tough decision to invest your money in newly project but to be honest it's kind of a good idea because most of my portfolio are saved by those newly project i invested it most of the time those bitcoin , ethereum gives me headache and i don't know whenever i invest all my money there most of the people are selling or dumping their money , well we have our own decision to be made and it's up to us whenever we wanted to put it but this is just my advice don't put all the money in one sack you need to be open minded for you to be able to reach your profit goal.

I believe those are the ones we should care about when it comes to long term as well, because we are talking about long term here and that is very important. Sure in the short term, under 1 year, we could go for anything we want, there is really nothing to really pick and choose, because it is definitely something there are many that is great that way, but that is of course all depending on our research, you could make 10x that way if you are lucky but you could lose all your money that way as well so it is a high risk high reward situation.

But when it comes down to those top ones, they are very very very rarely go down which means you may not make x10 (you can if you are lucky, bitcoin made 10x since last march) but you will at least make money for sure without doubt, and that is what I believe will happen as on those top ones and you can hold them for over a decade.

yep, because as I mentioned above the coin has lasted for at least 3 more years even though the polka dots haven't arrived but it has a good vision for the long term.
and also if holding for a decade the option to store long-term coins is best because all I know is bitcoin that is more than 1 decade old.

I consider holding bitcoin for long-term investment and not trying to use altcoins for that investment. The altcoins can be an investment if you do not use them as a long-term investment because the altcoins still follow bitcoin price moves. I am afraid that if you use altcoin for long-term investment, you will see the value will be up and down, and sometimes, the value will drop too deep. That can make you panic or shock because your investment value will not be worth holding for a long-term investment.
