the cost of a 51% attack at the time is 0.0665 USD per minute,
to mine a block you will need an average of 120 seconds, but this only applies to a long period ~ >2-3 hours.
the adjustment of the difficulty level amounts to max 200% over a period of 8 minutes which was certainly sufficient at times when there were no asics or you could not rent hashpower on a minute basis.
of course, this costs you an average of 0.06$ every minute over a long distance, you can't change anything about that, but various factors accumulate seriously.
low hashpower in the network in general,
as a result, a very low level of difficulty, a retarget over period X, maximum increase of Y during X ,
