Repeated burning of Switch board - What’s wrong?

Hey guys need your help with the title. I know this is very usual problem with the mining. All the miners heating up a lot and withdrawing intense electricity from the switch board.

But I don’t think it has to be repeating itself again and again. I have connected the best 15 ampere socket to my miner PSU.

Is the problem is with socket board or my household electricity ??

The only socket part is burning out and house beaker drops after this.

Mining Rig: RX Sapphire GPU cards. (13 in number)

The hash rate is around 250 MHz.

If you dont know why its happening then I would suggest a qualified electrician look at your problem.

15 AmP is just 1800 watts I hope you aren't consuming more than that through the socket? It's more then that can be the issue, 13x RX580 is bad news if that's the RX card you are referring to, that's almost 1500+ watts from the gpu only minus other things that are using power too

I will say this was good answer.

If you are a 120 volt home you are simply not able to pull more than 15 x 120 x 80% = 1440 watts for any length of time.

So op pull three cards off the rig.

10 cards are going to do about 1200 -1300 watts at the wall.

13 are going to do 1600-1700 watts at the wall. This is a liable act of deliberate mis use of your power circuit. If you are 120 volt.

So

A) Burn the place down you get zero for insurance.
B) Burn the place down you get charged with a crime if some one is hurt.
C) Burn the place down you get charged for arson.

This is USA law in every state.

You are not allowed to intentionally overload a circuit.

And you are now aware that is what you are doing.

Now if you pull three cards off the rig and you feel cool by the switch good.

 If the switch/circuit breaker is still too hot there are more possible issues.

Get back to us and see if running 10 cards works.


I will further explain.
There are many sapphire cards.
You did not tell us which one.

I used  common ones to get my numbers
the rx470  8gb
the rx 480 8gb
the rx 570 8gb
the rx 580 8gb

if set correctly they do 120-130 watts and about 25mh

they can do 200 watts
they sometimes go runaway and even when set to 120-130 watts they say fuck you I am burning 200 watts.  which means 200 x 13 or 2600 watts really over loading your circuit.

So next issue did you do this under linux or with windows.  windows has runway power issues way more often than linux.

So may this is happening which is worse since you are already using too much power on the circuit and if you go run away it is worse.

Exactly, the guy overload the socket and it's 100% sure that there will be spark, fire or cable melting and burning, how about going higher that that 15amp? Probably 30amp would do, that is after calculating every power appliances in your home that's drawing current through that socket

And thats why i say he needs a licensed electrition.  Hes lucky it hasnt caused a fire and chances are the wiring needs replacement on that circuit.  Get a professional in there so its right and complies with the electrical code.

He obviously doesnt have the knowledge to correct the problem himself.  Hes melting the plug...then the breaker is tripping...the wiring on that circuit is going to be damaged.

Yes they are RX 580 sapphire cards and 13 of them are installed currently.

Both miners altogether are currently withdrawing around 1850 Watts of power. That's the reason it sucks all the time.

Since I am in India, I need to use extension socket to attach to the main board. That's double socket on the wall and it's capacity is 15 amps.

I mean in future I might just increase the capacity of mining. Will I need to apply for direct commercial connection with higher voltages?

Guy since you are the one that do the wiring go out and buy stronger socket and I'm pretty sure they exists, there are 30amp sockets around the world and I'm sure they exists in india as well, you are lucky you don't burn down your house

Lolz. 
That was pretty close. However, I had the assembly installed in vacant room with nothing to burn nearby.

Since the incidence I am not mining now so that I could figure out how not to burn down the house. 

Fine, I will look for the 30 amp or higher range socket in the market. Will post the whole assembly with pictures here before I even switch it on. I am currently scared to do it again so need to have all the precautions before hand.

You will need to replace the socket / wires / breaker with properly sized and undamaged ones for 30amp.

So I have now brought 16 AMP chords and Switch boards. Got brand new Male to Female holder since the mining rig has PSU with different shape chord (UK type). I was also thinking to buy extra PSU so that it can act as an extra breaker if something goes wrong. I just dont want to burn down my cards and not even sure if that really happens.

So with all new branded chords I will have this assembly up and running in couple of weeks. I will be renovating the room for proper air circulation.

The pictures will be up soon. Hope to see your feedbacks on the same once I do!

If you are using up to 15amp mate you shouldn't be buying any thing less than 30amp as an upgrade, double of the watts that you are drawing is way safer and also give less strain on the wires and socket, 16amp again? That's not cool

Wikipedia tells me that power in India is typically 230V 50Hz.

"Licensed electrician" sound like a good answer, but I wonder if that option is available.

In general if part of the circuit (wire, connector, switch, etc) gets too hot to touch, that indicates a weak point that should be upgraded to use thicker conductors.

being a miner requires you to have electrical know hows, same with knowledge in computers.
