There are many networks available on Metamask.

Is there any difference among all these networks?

If i want to buy, send or swap any token, will it the matter for me choose any one network to perform the task?

Any significance?

Why are there so many networks?

Always use Ethereum Mainnet for any ether and erc20 transaction, as it clearly said there
Code:
The default network for Ether transactions is Main Net.
If you see there carefully, all the networks below Ethereum Mainnet is a test networks.
Metamask is able to support some custom networks. you can also use bsc network with bnb as as the gas on metamask with custom rpg.

Like Ropsten and others?

All those are for testing and other purposes, similar to the Bitcoin testnet. They resemble the real ether chain in order to allow testing..but not for transacting on the real Ethereum chain. For that you must remain on the proper network that is already there and send coins on that network.

Buy tokens on the mainnet, not on any testnet. I suggest you also read a bit about the network and how it works. You may be new to the thing and for that you need to learn safety methods to prevent scams.

The only thing that makes it different is the nodes. that gives you more option for which node that you wanna use it to broadcast your tx.

it doesn't matter what kind of network you have used to swap or etc as long as it's running on the main net and there no differences. Each network was running in the different nodes.

there are several networks related to Ethereum network, Main-net as the one and only with ERC-20 and all other tokens that have any worth, and are on the main-net
test-nets as Ropsten, Rinkeby, Kovan and similar are for testing purposes as well

but, Metamask can be used for other Ethereum copies, such as Binance Smart Chain, RIF instrastructure RSK chain and similar, all these network have to be set up through Custom RPC panel in Metamask network list

You can use metamask for anything you need if there is support, and don't be surprised when there are many networks at the moment because the crypto space has started to grow so that it has created a lot of networking across multiple networks, which allows users to first analyze before using it and that too according to what we need of course.

Also, if the main Ethereum network is down,,, then it is probably pointless to try all the rest even if one is not a testnet. Question about Binance Smart Chain guys, how is it still using the same address as Ethereum? I tried finding out how or why but could not get a satisfactory answer. I thought this was an entirely new network on its own right?

Those nets are only test net that will  be used to test the contract or something else but when you are using another wallet other than metamask and you will get not only test net but another network that was connecting to the mainnet just like ethereum mainnet on the metamask. It's called RPC and it can be used also to create a new connection to the another chain like RSK or BSC

IIRC, there are some crypto projects that create her own network on metamask for the usage of storing own coin as well having "only family" chain, examples of such coin was E3token which have their own E3token network.
If you really wanting to find ERC20 token then it's advisable to use ethereum network, the first network at the select cursor. Therefore, you are selecting a network corresponding with preferred coin.

"Chainlist is a list of EVM networks. Users can use the information to connect their wallets and Web3 middleware providers to the appropriate Chain ID and Network ID to connect to the correct chain."
Ethereum technology allows one wallet to work on many blockchains, because these blockchains are clones of Ethereum.
