I have currently plugged in an old hard drive to my new PC that has an old wallet and coins in, but every time I try to load the wallet I get the following: (I can't upload the image for some reason here?)

A fatal error occurred. Bitcoin can no longer continue safely and will quit.

EXCEPTION:
N5boost12interprocess22interprocess_exceptionE
The system cannot find the file specified.
F:/Wallets/Bitcoin/bitcoin-0.9.1-win\64\bitcoing-qt.exe Runaway Exception

Any help please would be greatly appreciated!

Seems like you're not the first one to experience this problem

https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/issues/1797

Seems like this dude just installed a newer release... bitcoin-0.9.1 is ancient...

Just make sure you save a copy of your wallet.dat in a safe place before doing anything else.

You should start with looking for the paths presented here: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Data_directory

Yes. Once you do that, the first time you run Bitcoin Core you need to pass it the -rescan option to update the wallet with newer transactions that are relevant to it.

Subsequent times you don't need this switch. It's only used for updating old wallet.dat files.

As said by other users, you're not the first to experience this issue and by searching through the forum a user fixes the issue just by changing the ownership of the bitcoin directory and its contents so it's owned by the user, and not by the root.
But I will advise you to backup the wallet.dat file before making any change.

He's not having that issue. He's using Windows where there's no root user and no "Permissioned Denied" message.

In addtion to what others have said, since the old hard drive was used on your new PC the problem could be caused by the anti virus or anti malicious software you have on the new computer. If you try out the idea provided to you early and the problem persist.
I will advise you check your computer firewall/anti virus if the program is not allow to communicate.

So... I have downloaded the new bitcoin-core QT and it spent the day yesterday updating...

When loading this morning it asked me to create a new wallet... which I did, I backed up the wallet.dat file yesterday but my old coins are not popping up in the new wallet created... What have I missed?

When I used to load the previous versions the coins were just there..

Feeling like I have done something unrecoverable here, any suggestions would be appreciated massively.

Thanks,
LoyceV

You don't need the new wallet (if this wasn't obvious already).

Did you load the old wallet.dat into your new Bitcoin Core installation?

As long as you have an untouched backup of your wallet.dat, you should be fine.

@LoyceV thank you for the response.

Did you load the old wallet.dat into your new Bitcoin Core installation? - How do you mean here, do I just copy the wallet.dat folder into the same directory?

Either copy it in the correct path for your os: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Data_directory
OR edit bitcoin.conf found in the same path (add wallet=</path/to/dir>)
OR start your binary with this option: -walletdir

Or, you should theoretically be able to open a wallet straight from qt's menu (i don't know when this feature was added, but it's relatively new iirc)... But TBH, i don't use the gui, and i'm also running an older version of core, so i have never used this feature...

Where is your "old" wallet.dat? Huh

You can either shutdown Bitcoin Core, then copy the "old" wallet.dat to the datadir shown in Bitcoin Core (Menu: Window -> Information) and replace the "new" wallet.dat. Then restart Bitcoin Core...

or

You can shutdown Bitcoin Core, then copy the "old" wallet.dat into the datadir and rename it something like "old_wallet.dat"... then restart Bitcoin Core and use the "File -> Open wallet..." menu and you should see "old_wallet.dat" shown in the menu. When you select that, you'll get a dialog pop up and it should automatically rescan the wallet for you.

As always... only work with copies of your original wallet.dat file...
