Let's say I have an exodus wallet and an electrum wallet. How would I go about transferring bitcoins from one to the other by use of exporting private keys without having to pay the transaction fees by sending to an address? I am the owner of both wallets and this is just to transfer to myself.

There are several different types of Bitcoin clients. The most secure are full nodes like Bitcoin Core, which will follow the rules of the network no matter what miners do. Even if every miner decided to create 1000 bitcoins per block, full nodes would stick to the rules and reject those blocks.

Exodus wallet is a non custodial wallet and you can get the private key for your wallet
How do I view my Private Keys?

You will get two private keys for two bitcoin address: 1 (Legacy) and bc1 (bech32 address)
Click on ... at right corner (see the article), you will be able to Get your private key.
There are two private keys for two types of address and you can use each of them to import into Electrum.
Download Electrum wallet and import your private key:

File - New/ restore - Type a name for your wallet file (Next) - Import bitcoin addresses or private keys (Next) - Type (Click on Info)
Code:
WIF keys are typed in Electrum, based on script type.

A few examples:
p2pkh:KxZcY47uGp9a...        -> 1DckmggQM...
p2wpkh-p2sh:KxZcY47uGp9a... -> 3NhNeZQXF...
p2wpkh:KxZcY47uGp9a...      -> bc1q3fjfk...

If you want to import and get 1 address, type
Code:
p2pkh:your first privatekey from Exodus

If you want to import and get bc1 address, type
Code:
p2wpkh:your second privatekey from Exodus

After you finish the import, click on Receive tab and check the receiving address which should be exactly the same as in Exodus.

If you set "enable multiple addresses" option and need to transfer the whole wallet: import the "Secret 12 word Recovery phrase" instead of individual private keys.
That way, any new address that you'll create in Exodus will be restored to Electrum as well.

In Electrum, use the options: "Standard wallet->I already have a seed", click options, tick "BIP39 seed", paste the recovery phrase;
in the address type selection screen, select the proper address type that you want to recover, there are info in that window.
Create two Electrum wallets if have multiple different address types.

If haven't created a backup of Exodus, here are the steps: https://support.exodus.com/article/41-how-do-i-backup-my-exodus-wallet

Note: by importing the private key(s) or the recovery phrase, you haven't "transferred" any bitcoins. It's just like creating a copy or Exodus wallet's address(es) to Electrum.

This is not a blockchain transaction, so fees are not applicable. You just transfer your keys from one wallet to another, which will allow you to use either of them. Your balance will still be available in both wallets, it won't double Smiley As for how to do it you were already given detailed instructions. Good luck.

With all the tips already written above, I would just add that it is a well-known thing that it is not very smart to play with private keys in this way, especially on computers that are not virus/malware clean. People who do this often do another very dangerous thing, they save the seed or private keys as plain text on their computer or save them by e-mail.

In all this, the only question is when this information will come to someone with bad intentions - which does not have to be exclusively a hacker, it can be a family member or a friend. So don't play with sensitive information unless it's absolutely necessary - 2 crypto wallets with the same private keys are only a double risk.
