Building first rig - Advice/Tips

I am a grad student currently, and am reliant on a PhD stipend, but would like to add an additional line of income. I decided to purchase the following items in order to build a mining rig (It is also helpful to know, that I will not be paying for electricity and will have access to 3 phase 220v power):

Please let me know if I would even make a profit after 6-8 months with this setup. I was thinking of buying an additional graphics card unit ($500 range). Sorry as well if I haven't provided enough information, I am very open to any type of advice or warnings before spending approximately 2-3 grand. I was also thinking of joining a pool with this setup (if that is even possible).

Like Phil said, the PSU is bad get some reputable brand like Corsair or EVGA or Thermaltake or ENERMEX, etc. You don't need 16GB of ram, 8GB should be enough. You also don't need an SSD for a mining rig, just use some old HDD you got laying around somewhere.

Regarding the profits? You probably won't make a profit after 6-8 months with 1 GPU. Right now that GPU earns $3 a day so about $90 a month. However most likely in a month or two the profits might not be as high, might be $2 a day or less. Or might be $5 a day if ETH hits $3000-4000, nobody knows.

Either way to pay for all your gear faster you need more GPUs like 5-6 per rig. Right now however GPUs are crazy expensive. If you could get the GPUs cheaper at MSRP prices or something second hand then perhaps, however getting a profit by buying these expensive GPUs doesn't seem like a good idea.

For your information I'm using 2gb ram on my PC with 4 graphic cards for mining and I have no issues at all, large amount of RAM space is a waste if you are mining with 1x to 4x GPUs, also rtx2060 sucks I'm performance for it's price

Buy two gtx1660 or rx580 and get 63 to 65MH instead of a single rtx2060 that can only do 27 - 33MH on ethereum at a very high price per the card presently, you need to sit down and replan the whole mining rig setup

the psu has 3 jacks for cpu and or pcie cables.

so you need 1 for the cpu
leaves you only 2 pcie cables. which means very little amount of gpus.

the seasonic focus and or the corsair 850 has 5 jacks for cpu or pcie cables.  so 1 for cpu and 4 for your gpus. means 2x the gpus.

and both the corsair and seasonic have longer  warranties and cost less.

So the psu and the gpu selections made are very poor.

these 2 items cost 65 vs your 130 for your cpu choice and they are better as power usage and processing.

skip the sata to six pin use on of you pcies cables from the  psu's I picked it will do 2 risers.

you can get away with 2gb ram but that has some issues some of the time.

2 cards are about 1000 usd on ebay.  which is a real fuck you price as they listed at 500-600 for 2 when they were purchased new.

I have 10 or more of them

here are 2 in a rig they earn about  4.50 - 5.00 a day with free power.

I paid as low as 192 for some of these cards. they now all go for over 400 closer to 500 a card.

Spending 1000+ to earn 5 a day is risky

Forgive me for asking - where's a rig in your post? From what I read you're going to build a computer running one GPU LOL. Pay attention to quality power supplu as Phil mentioned, if you don't have HDD/SSD already then buy a cheap 60-120Gb one and run it on Linux, even 4Gb of RAM will be enough then. Plus, why buy new? There's plenty of used gear around.

If you want to build a computer for work, then this might be a good option. But I would choose a more powerful processor.
If you want to invest in mining by paying 2-3 thousand dorllars for 35 megahashes of Ethereum hashrate, then you may not be able to recoup your investment.
The profit will constantly decrease and in the near future we will see new hardforks that will reduce the reward for miners.

If you already have the supplies, the angled aluminum and wood should cost $40-50. You could buy all the materials and supplies for ~$80. If you want to save some money you could use 1/16" angles, like BBT used in his build but it's kind of thin and bends too easy.

To be blunt, my personal opinion is that building a mining rig from scratch in this market, especially with the terrible availability of GPUS (let alone insane prices)... is a BAD idea. I would strongly recommend just buying crypto if you want to get some - you want to buy hardware when it's cheap - that was in the bear market of a year ago - not now.

There are pros and cons to both the aluminum and wood open air rigs. Basically when I started out I only used wood because it was much cheaper. And you might not even need to buy it, you probably got some laying around in your basement. The biggest issue was actually finding wood which was straight and even. Because there are small curves and it affects how the frame looks afterwards however they are purely cosmetic. People are scared to use wood due to fire issues however wood doesn't start burning until like 200C or so and at that temp you must have serious issues with your setup.

Aluminum is nice and sturdy but the parts are very pricey. And it also takes longer to cut the pieces and its more difficult to clean up metal shavings than wood shavings. Wood shavings you can even do it in your bath tub and just rinse it down, you can''t do that with metal shavings. If I was building a rig or 2 I would go with aluminum however if I had many rig frames to build I would just use wood instead due to the simplicity, cost and speed in getting it up and running.

I spend about $ 5 on materials for the wooden frame of my farms.
In the upper part of the truss, where the case is placed closer to the video cards, you can use aluminum.
The beauty and aesthetics of my farms do not affect their hashrate.
I will not show my farms to anyone
People are afraid of a fire from the wooden cases of mining farms, but they are not afraid to put a mining farm at home when there are many things around that can catch fire.

There are just 2 positions that i can tell right choice - mb and CPU. GPU - very bad, SSD - can be smaller, but ok, it will not be much cheaper, memory - extremely large.
I see 2 ways - buy used GPU 10xx NVIDIA (or 578, 588 - AMD) and noname PSU or but 5x00 from AMD or 30xx from NVIDIA and platinum or server PSU.
