MILITARY RULE IN NIGERIA

In the early hours of January 15,1966, Nigeria witnessed the first military coupled by Major chukeuma Nzeogwu and other majors in the army.it was a bloody military intervention in the political history of Nigeria.
     Later, Major General Aguiyi Ironsi, came into the scene to take the mantle of leadership of the country,His tenure was however, short- lived. A counter coup was staged on July 29, 1966 and Aguiyi Ironsi was toppled and killed and Lt colonel Yakubu Gowon took over the political Leadership of the country.General Yakubu Gowon spent nine years in office and was removed by Brigadier Murtala Mohammed. Also, after spending 200 days in office, Murtala Mohammed was assassinated in an abortive coup led by Lt, colonel Dimka on February 13, 1976, General olusegun obansanjo, the next in command to Murtala Mohammed, became the head of state. it was at this time that the military kept to it's promise of handling over to a democratically elected civilian government.

   Coups in Nigeria didn't augur well because it was so dirty and deadly even then military officers and soldiers at some point got scared of how everything was going no matter how highly ranked you are the phobia got up with every living soul in the military and the damage was felt by the masses the Nigerian community never saw peace talk more of development and social infrastructures the basis weren’t on ground the people agitated for a democratic system which till today I see no democracy in Nigeria democratic system. It is that bad and pathetic.

OP, you make it sound like what Nigeria has now is better than a military regime. If anything, it's worse. The current president, Mohammadu Buhari, was there as a military head of state and doesn't pretend not to still be a dictator even as a civilian president today. If not for the flagrant abuse and disregard for human rights, I think the country was better under a military regime than what Nigeria has at the moment with all these corrupt politicians around.
