Is a 1 Gbps LAN ethernet port enough on a Modem/Router to use on a Switch?

Hi Bitcointalk community,

For the last 2 days, my 2 mining rigs (6 GPUs each) get disconnected once a day.

I don't think it's the electricity the problem but tomorrow I'll have access to the Voltage and Power graphs from my Power Distribution Unit because I connected it on my LAN so I will verify if it's the electricity the issue.

It appears to be the internet the culprit. I just called my ISP and they told me that my internet signal is all good and there were no interruption lately.

My modem/router is upstairs, I use a Cat 8 Ethernet Cable 50 ft Shielded to reach my garage downstair and it's plug to a network switch (NETGEAR 16-Port Gigabit Ethernet Unmanaged Switch (GS316)).
I don't think the issue is the Ethernet cables from the network switch to my rigs because both rigs get disconnected in the same time and I use Cat 6 Ethernet Cables.

I was wondering, my modem/router has a 1 Gbps LAN ethernet port. Is it enough 1 Gbps for 2 mining rigs? How many internet data could 2 rigs (total 379 MH/s on Ethash) is consuming?

I could buy another modem/router with a 2.5 Gbps LAN ethernet port, I am wondering if it can be the issue or is it the network switch?

OMG how do you manage your mining rigs? Do they always restart automatically when the internet connection is back?

Thank for the chrome extension Internet Connection Monitor, I installed it pretty nice. It's written:

"Q: Will it work if Chrome is closed?
A: Not, it will not. You need to have a Chrome window open to track your connection log. It's relatively easy to add Chrome to autostart on Windows, Mac or Linux"

I only flashed drive HiveOS on my mining rigs though. I installed the Chrome extension on my Macbook but it's WiFi (not Ethernet connected like my mining rigs are). I guess I have to keep my macbook on sleep mode or something to have that extension working (I cannot shut down my laptop).

Back to the OP's main question, mining is a VERY low bandwidth process. A 1GB connection is enough bandwidth to handle at least several dozen to well over 100 miners.

So this is not the bandwidth of the LAN ethernet port on my modem/router the problem.

Yesterday I contacted again my ISP and they recommended me to reset as factory the modem/router which I did. Since yesterday I don't see any interruption for my 2 mining rigs on HiveOS but interestingly on the Chrome extension "Internet Connection Monitor" I have 3 internet connection interruptions since I did a factory reset on my modem/router as you can see in the photo here:



I start to wonder if the Chrome extension "Internet Connection Monitor" is really accurate or if these interruptions are in fact not affecting some how my mining rigs?

Depends on how long the connection was interrupted. Most miners wait for around 5 minutes with no shares being received before restarting so shorter outages are ignored.

Log in to you modem ,  and check the log files , or something under " connection ",   check your " Downstream Bonded Channels " and look for a "Corrected" and " uncorrected errors " if there is a lot of uncorrected errors , that can be a issue . If this is the case,  call your ISP , and let them know about a uncorrected errors issues , they must to send a technicians to check the wiring from the pole/distribution point to your house .
The question how fast is your internet connection , you should not have any issue with a 1GB Lan port , and with that switch , but make sure you modem provide enough speed from WAN side ( internet side from your ISP ) to your switch also run some speed tests , make sure you dont have any "packet loss"

After looking at my uncorrectable codewords on my modem network, it seems okay as you can see:



I read on a post if the uncorrectable codewords is less than the Correctable Codewords then it's all good.

Fingers crossed, I might have found the issue. In my flight sheet on HiveON pool, I added 2 servers instead of 1 as you can see here:



Until now I didn't have connectivity issues with my rigs.

Finally I found the culprit! Apparently my rigs had connection issues because of the miner software. I don't know why exactly but after 2 weeks of investigation (hardware, software, LAN, electricity) I changed the miner software from Phoenix miner to T-rex miner and since then it's been more than 3 day without connection issues.

I learned in the process that on HiveOS we can get the logs file. The logs is stored in the /var/log folder, but to avoid having them overwritten every time, the “logs-on” command must be enabled on all workers.

We can use the following to download a miner log file straight off the Dashboard;

message file "**miner**.log" -f=/var/log/miner/**minername**/**minername.log**

So, say for example I want TeamRedMiner's log;

message file "teamredminer.log" -f=/var/log/miner/teamredminer/teamredminer.log

The command line sent will appear in blue. The downloadable file will appear in white. Clicking on it, will download it.
