The Problem of Data Breaches

Seems like every other day we are hearing about data breaches. It makes you wonder what is really going on. Some people might not care much, but we should care. Our personal data should not be shared with powerful entities. When they know about you so well they can target you better to sell to you and take advantage of you.

Do you think some of these companies are purposely leaking data? Do you think it is a technical issue?

It's a two part problem. One, companies have terrible IT and cyber security and don't care about investing in it. They'd rather the data be breached and deal with the fall out instead of investing in online security. Second, people just love to give away loads of information about themselves to big tech companies which throw it in a database somewhere to be used by advertisers.

I remember when the cambridge analytica scandal happened. It's like the whole world was shocked that Facebook uses all the info it knows about you and sells it advertisers. Crazy!

Even if we did things with blockchain encryption, breaches would still come, a little.

Years ago it was said that it would take the NSA 25,000 years to break Bitcoin encryption. So, they have been trying ever since to break a Bitcoin single address. Have they done it, yet? They aren't going to advertise it.

The point is, if it is not blockchain or greater encryption, it just might be broken easily.

No offense but your question is so naïve (IMHO) I find it hard to believe you're not trolling. Your browser collects your private data. Your emails are stored whether you have deleted them or not. 90% of the apps on your phone collect your data. On the other hand it's a fact that Microsoft, Google, Facebook etc etc closely work with government agencies and share collected data with them. Your phone (and billing system of your cell provider) tracks and keeps all your movements for years - have you ever checked your location history on your Google account? Ever flied a plane? Congrats, your biometrical data is stored as well and with all these cameras everywhere, well, you know. Just out of curiosity try to have a conversation about any consumer product when your phone/laptop is close to you - all of a sudden next day you'll be seeing that product advertised to you.  I can go on and on but I hope you get my drift.
