And no doubt there will be some folks that fall for it.
Don't suppose you reported the links to Google as scams...  https://developers.google.com/search/docs/advanced/guidelines/report-spam

The worst part is the shear amount of credible media outlets that discussed it.

If you means media outlets like coindesk et al -- they are NOT 'credible'. They are pay-to-play sites with near zero oversight of what folks pay them to present as 'news'. When you come across crap like that miner the best thing you can do is post a complaint comment about it as well as send a post to whatever they have that they call editors.

Exactly this. All those media outlets can be bought, some for few hundreds of dollars, some for morw but end result is the same - they can't be trusted.

Regarding this bitwats miners, if you use mining calculator it turns out that ROI for their miners is approximately one month, maybe a bit more. If those miners were really that good, no one in their right mind would sell them just yet, with them being so efficient.

Rule of thumb:if something sounds too good to be true=scam.

Some have already fallen for the scam as seen by a number of complaints in reddit. I really don't know someone can just send money to random service without even carrying out a simple google search or asking a few questions in the Bitcoin mining communities if they are not sure.
