Whether you buy a nano ledger or trezor, what do you do with the box?  I never thought about this and always thought just leave it in the closet or box somewhere but isn't that bad since if a thief finds it...well they would go okay so that person has a crypto wallet?  Obviously some people hide their hardware wallet somewhere in the apartment and some just put it out in the open.

But does anyone here think its a good idea to destroy or throw the box away?  Obviously if you going to resell it to someone, its best to have the box but many people obviously aren't going to buy a used hardware wallet.  So curious if any of you even think much about this?

I think it is a good idea to destroy the box. I will do it now with mine Smiley

If a thief gets into my house and find a hardware wallet, he might think it is a pen drive or something like that. But if he sees the box, he might get curious about how much bitcoin I might have in the house.

Good idea OP.

I still have the box to the Keepkey wallet I never used--the box it came in was the best thing about it, unfortunately (lol).  But yeah, I'd say for security's sake you ought to toss the box and anything in it you don't need just in case you have a break-in or whatever.  You should be secure enough in any case, but why even take chances like that?

As far as reselling goes, hopefully nobody would buy a second-hand hardware wallet, regardless of whether the owner still has the original box or not.  You're just asking for trouble if you do that, and given that most devices aren't that expensive it wouldn't be worth the cost savings to buy a used HW wallet.

Bought Ledger Nano S before and I still have the box. Well, it's safe in my vault and only a few from my family knew about what that box is.

I don't intend to destroy or resell it because it's very rare for someone to get into my place where I kept it.

You're not wrong that a physical box can be a big blinking warning sign to thieves.

I have heard anecdotally from acquaintances in law enforcement about situations where a house has been burgled... the owners made insurance claims etc getting all new stuff like TVs/Laptops/Phones/Computers etc... and then put the boxes for all the new toys/gadgets/applicances out for recycling... basically, like a giant sign to the thieves "Hey, we got all new stuff!"

aaaaaaaaaand then they got burgled again a day or 2 later! Shocked Undecided

Having said that, it should be easy enough to dispose of the packaging for a hardware wallet without it being obvious... most come in relatively small packages... so destroying it shouldn't be that hard... a knife/scissors, or some fire would work well Tongue

and if you're paranoid that someone may be "dumpster diving" your trash, go for a walk around town and drop it in a random trash can or dispose of it in the trash at a McDonalds or something. Even if someone finds it, it won't be able to be tracked back to your address.

It makes sense to destroy the box, it will certainly help in case the thieves who are not versed in such devices still realize that it is something valuable. However, if you are the target and thieves are looking for everything related to cryptocurrencies, throwing the box will not help - in that case it helps if you have at least 2 HW, the first can be in the original box and serve as bait to deceive thieves that they succeeded, and the second HW can be well hidden in a safe place.

Of course, all of the above in this thread is completely meaningless if someone steals such a device that has multiple accounts protected with a passphrase.

I guess this is the first time a hardware wallet box is being discussed. It sounds funny but actually important.

I didn't throw away mine. I'm still keeping it. I'm using it as a case for my hardware wallet. It's a good box. So wherever my wallet goes, so will its box.

Personally, it is not much of a big deal to me not only because there are only a few people in my country who is familiar with Bitcoin but also because people knowing that you have a hardware wallet is just like people knowing that you have Bitcoin.

I made a mistake by throwing my ledger box into the organic trashcan on my front house. I did it directly after unboxing it. I forgot to turn into the fire.

Now, got regret it. I won't think too far right now, I hope That box decayed to dust in the landfill.

this lesson for everyone.

I didn't thought that the box would be a much of important in regards of security, though I kept mine. No plan of disposing it actually.

Though I don't have vault to secure the hw I feel its secured on the house, and would cant be found so easily.

What is the best way to get rid of the box?  Do you all just cut it into pieces and then toss it in different trash cans?  I guess you could do what someone said and toss some in different public trashcans when you are out in public and thats better than dumping it in your trash can?

Anyone used a paper shredder for this?  That probably would be better?

Also just thought about this.  But if you had those seed cards where you could write your seed there, those should also be destroyed right?  Its like those cards are literally labeling... hardware wallet nano ledger etc.

If you can find a shredder that will handle the box without jamming, sure... imo, fire is still the best option... but then, I'm something of a pyromaniac Tongue

Same as the box... if you're not using them, then they should probably be destroyed as well.

Cut it in little pieces and put it inside a used diaper if you have a little kid. Most thieves don't like going through feces looking for something valuable.

But if you had those seed cards where you could write your seed there, those should also be destroyed right?  Its like those cards are literally labeling... hardware wallet nano ledger etc.
You are supposed to use all three and store your seed in different places. In case you lose one or no longer have access to it, you will have two more to count on. If for some reason you only used one (not recommended) or two, just stash the third among your personal documents. It might come in handy sometimes in the future if you need a place to write down the words for a new seed.

I still keep my boxes around, just in case I ever want to sell them years later as collectibles. It's indeed a bad idea to keep such items somewhere visible. If I wanted to get rid of my box, I would burn it.

imo, fire is still the best option... but then, I'm something of a pyromaniac Tongue
I turned into one as well ever since I started burning all my previous seeds and crypto-related or other sensitive documents. It's the cheapest and the most fun way to get rid of them to be honest, lol.
