This is true to an extent, although I know a number of merit sources, myself included, who will often merit posts they disagree with if they are constructive or contribute well to the topic at hand. The more important difference, though, is that regardless of how much merit or not a post gets, it doesn't alter its visibility. Anything slightly controversial, non-mainstream, or unpopular on Reddit, regardless of whether or not it is actually correct, might as well not be posted, as within an hour it is downvoted to oblivion and hidden from the majority of users.

It's particularly noticeable if you go in to a thread about a topic you are particularly knowledgeable about. I've seen blatantly wrong and sometimes even dangerous information be upvoted to the top, with attempts to correct or clarify be downvoted and hidden. If you can identify that happening in threads you are knowledgeable about, then the only logical conclusion is that it is also happening in threads you are less knowledgeable about, meaning Reddit can't be trusted for any meaningful discussion.

It really depends on the subreddit you browse. Some are full of hostile posts similar to the ones you quoted (*cough* r/btc *cough*).

The actions of a vocal few tend to define the atmosphere of a community in general even if there are some nice guys out there.

My main issue with Reddit is it is an echo chamber. The upvote/downvote system is supposed to be used on the basis of what constitutes a valuable post, but instead is used on the basis of "I agree/like this" or "I disagree/don't like this/don't understand this". Post a chart with colorful lines talking about going to the moon and you'll be boosted to the front page in no time. Post an in depth evaluation or criticism about some piece of the technology and you'll either be ignored or downvoted. Go to the front page of some crypto subreddit right now and I guarantee the top posts will be some memes about how we are all going to be rich and/or laughing at boomers or "non believers", but you'll have to dig deep to find some meaningful discussion about Lightning or Taproot.

It's a shitpost haven no doubt for most of the subreddits.

For instance with the Cryptocurrency subreddit, the amount of memes have caused the subreddit to split into its own meme community due to the rampant abuse of MOONs.

This forum has had a huge part to play in bitcoin's lifespan, legends such as Satoshi & Hal Finney were here, bitcoin devs post here. If you don’t like it then feel free to leave.

And that's the main difference (I think) between Reddit and bitcointalk--the latter was around from the beginning and was created exclusively to discuss bitcoin.  There's a rich history to this forum, whereas Reddit is a discussion forum for many different topics, and personally I can't stand that site.

I also think it's pretty cool that the look of the forum hasn't changed--at least it hasn't since I've been a member, which has been over six years.  Did it look just like this in the very beginning?  I'm assuming so.  In any case, a lot of folks think bitcointalk is outdated, but does it really need a whole bunch of bells and whistles?  I think not.  The purpose of it is to facilitate discussion, and I think it does that just fine as it is.  It would be very weird to me to see the new forum software (whenever that's coming out, probably in the next century).

I think you did not research about this site before posting your topic and you didn't read the website name. It is bitcointalk means bitcoin + talk, which means talk about bitcoin. And this forum site was the only way to narketing bitcoin when bitcoin launches and also to connect others for discussed about bitcoin. So the simple thing is this site is a bitcoin dedicated site. But also this site has lots of categories to duscussed about everything like off topic where you guys will get every news exclude crypto news means your news. So don't panic stay happy and by the way welcome to bitcoin world.

It did look the same, but there was no merit, feedback, or trust network.  I'm with you on the nostalgia of this forum.  I will be sad if this doesn't continue to live on.  I'd personally like to see this forum forked even if the 'old' forum was given some new url.  It would be great if this place could go back to before the drama and signature campaigns.  Maybe remove all the additions since satoshi left and get back to what made this place great (actual enforcement of rules by people who care) while all the signature spammers, merit whores, and trust nazis could be free to move to the new forum.

Bitcoin forum has a huge history. When you search old posts, you can clearly see how it is source of some great events, like Bitcoin pizza or HODL is based in Bitcointalk. Reddit does not have such story.

Its a digital museum and if you take some time you will be mostly find all stuff here whats crypto related.
And i guess its the template of all other Crypto forums out there in some way .

Hi! Welcome!! BTT is a place where everything related to crypto be it technical/non-tech/memes/random stuff is covered here. Its far off better than reddit in terms of conversations, reddit is just pissing booth. Read the rules so you will understand what each subsection is about, and go around, and ask questions. And also what @o_e_l_e_o said.
Ah I just checked his profile page, guess the community kinda chased him off, he hasn't been online since 3rd of May. Truly sad.

Your are absolutely right... in fact his question was pretty genuine. If I put my self in place of him new to Bitcoin and crypto market I would find this forum pretty boring and dry. This is natural for any new comer when they are coming from a happening places like Twitter or Reddit this forum doesn’t have any attraction at first.

It takes some time to get used to it and understand the purpose of this forum. We should be more friendly and encouraging to new comers special to those who are asking questions.

There are not so many of newbies who ask questions nowadays (annoying or not), possibly because most of the incentive to post here has been reduced with the rank system and crash of ICOs; So the few who does hang around and post on the forum should be given the benefit of the doubt at the very least.
This particular user was also courteous and seemed eager to learn.

Don't know if the question mark at the end was intended, but a positive attitude is definitely needed. It would also be helpful if the admin can speed up the launch of a newbie welcome message, it will serve as a soft landing for users who find their way here.

Despite a few minor exceptions, my experience is that newcomers are generally welcomed in this community.

There are so many things about the forum to know, knowing fully that the forum was designed and name after bitcoin and launched by Satoshi Nakamoto in the year 2009. Some of this things you need to know are depicted below;
1. It is a site that was designed to discuss everything about bitcoin, Blockchain and cryptocurrency in general. Through this discussion a lot of people became educated and knowledgeable about bitcoin and cryptocurrency
2. Get paid in every quality post made; a lot of users has financially breakthrough in this forum. Many that never had money to invest into cryptocurrency has become great investors and whales in cryptocurrency through this Forum, this is because they developed interest in writing quality post and they made money through this means in the forum....

The website is is different from Reddit because its basically denoted for the discussion of bitcoin and other altcoin. It is a site that connect everybody who are ready to come in to the cryptocurrency community worldwide for Blockchain and other cryptocurrency related discussion This site was first designed and created for bitcoin but today it for different purpose. Today cryptocurrency companies come and display their coin through campaign and as well place values on them for a recognition, the site helps in bringing to the notice of the people working in it to know and recognise any new company and their type of coin as well as the value of the coin. I like to think of this forum as a sort of safe haven to discussion about anything related to cryptocurrencies. Where freedom of speech is usually much better than alternatives, doesn't have a broken popularity voting system, and doesn't have over zealous rules. Plus, is probably one of the only places which actually promotes substantial discussion, rather than the social media type replies the modern world is going towards.

Also, how nice is it to have a place which isn't littered with memes? Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a meme or a funny image from time to time, however constantly recycled memes are tedious, and just destroys actual discussion.

Exactly, and this is my biggest issue with Reddit. Reddit can be fantastic to read sometimes, but its so easily manipulated, you wouldn't want to read topics which are particularly sensitive or important, due to the fact that anyone with a motive could easily impose their views on it, simply by creating a massive farm of accounts to down vote content they disagree with.

If you are into politics, which I'll be honest I don't tend to stop by the politic sub reddit, its likely full of this sort of behaviour.

This website seems to be similar to reddit except with an older UI. It's obviously more focused on the topic of bitcoin but I can easily find a group on reddit to talk about bitcoin.

This is a great forum, i am sure that 100% of all crypto coin developers in circulation have accounts here.  this forum is an information haven of cryptocurrency.

No, that is not true. Many have, but certainly not 100% of the developers. If you take a look at this thread, you would see that many bitcoin developers use IRC and mailing lists to communicate with each other. GitHub is also high on the agenda for them.

When it comes to altcoin projects, Bitcointalk is a great place to advertise those especially if the company has plans to run ICO and similar advertising campaigns. But I have come across news headlines mentioning various projects who have never done any advertising on Bitcointalk. For that, they can use Reddit, YouTube, Twitter, Discord, and other social media.

I beg to disagree, bitcointalk is the last place where you want to advertise your altcoin project. I mean, back in the day when altcoins didn't have many option, advertising here was a must I guess. Hell, back in the day even Vitalik created ANN here to promote Ethereum, which I can't imagine  any of the new popular altcoins like Polkadot or Link would do now. I don't go much into altcoin section anymore, but from what I could see, huge majority of altcoin projects that come here to advertise are worst possible shitcoins not even capable of entering top 200-300.

Then again, it's no surprise that altcoins are avoiding bitcointalk. First, because vast majority of them are indeed worthless shitcoins and will be called out/tagged if there is anything wrong with them, and usually there is something to be found. 2nd, this is bitcoin forum after all so people here generally consider all altcoins as shitcoins (except maybe Monero and a few others) so why come here in the first place?
