Greetings to you all Bitcoiners,

Despite being a long-time lurker of Bitcoin Talk, I never took the chance to create an account myself.  Some of you older forum users seem to be enjoying the lifestyle of daily posters for real, and I cannot lie!  It does seem to be pretty fun hanging around here sometimes.

I would like to introduce myself as a privacy and security advocate, although an amateur one, and so my top priority today is getting my profile up and running with maximized privacy settings.  For this reason, before I start my Bitcoin Talk adventure, I would like to politely ask for some tips concerning my forum account settings.

To the present time, I have restricted the forum IP logs and hid my e-mail address and online status from my profile.  If there is any other setting I may have missed, your suggestions will be met with a lot of appreciation from my side and hopefully merits from other readers who currently own some spendable ones.

Regards,
PrivacyG

The Bitcoin network protocol was designed to be extremely flexible. It can be used to create timed transactions, escrow transactions, multi-signature transactions, etc. The current features of the client only hint at what will be possible in the future.

Good luck and see you around.

If you haven't already, have a read of this page: https://bitcointalk.org/privacy.php

It details all the relevant privacy behaviors of the forum in regards to your data, and things you can do to protect your data or limit its retention.

Opting in to limited retention and hiding your email is a good start. The next step would be to only use Tor to connect to the forum and to use a brand new email not connected to you or any other accounts, although you may already have not done this and linked your real IP or main email to your account. You could always create a new account though, if this is a concern of yours, although creating a new account through Tor is very difficult due to the evil fees.

If you are concerned about your privacy, do not leave the data of your social networks on the forum, or even better, refuse them altogether.
An interesting article came out today that the use of the TOP also needs to be done with caution since some users of cryptocurrencies have suffered from the misuse of this network.

You can also monitor your logged IPs on the forum over the last 30 days, to make see how well you are managing to hide your real IP or the geolocation of your whereabouts. The registered information will depend on how you connect (plain, vpn, tor), so what you see there should be consistent with this.

This is where you can take a look at the logged information: https://bitcointalk.org/myips.php

Bear in mind the overall retention periods and scopes, depicted in the link provided by @o_e_l_e_o.

As of now, I do not feel like acquiring a Copper Membership is a necessity.  I will prefer to advance to the next ranks by myself, on my own merits.

Amazing.  The page you have linked me to appears to have just enough information to get me started.

Social media is a giant privacy threat.  Does not make sense to publish personal information on a forum account with supposedly maximized privacy settings anyway.

(..) An interesting article came out today that the use of the TOP also needs to be done with caution since some users of cryptocurrencies have suffered from the misuse of this network.
Thank you, that was a good read.  Security varies from user to user depending on their behavior.  In reality, it is such a vague term.

You make your own security.  However, sometimes it is a smarter idea to ask others perhaps more experienced than you for tips prior to proceeding with your ideas.
