Proof-of-work purists, are you still out there?

Back in 2014, I remember a lot of people complaining about alternative protocols (proof-of-stake, proof-of-space etc.).

But now with several changes and brand new concepts coming in (like ETH switching over to PoS, the introduction of Algorand), does the opinion of PoW still being the only true form of decentralization still persist?

Bitcoin success has justify those people that are POW Purist, there is still no chain that has the security level of Bitcoin, though it is expensive to build up and sustain since other POW coins are struggling. The reason why most of these coins are shifting to POS is because they want to maintain the control of the system (Centralisation) instead of decentralising it

Hmmmm...but why don't bitcoin devs add stuff like smart contracts etc. to BTC? That will take up it's utility.

Also institutional investors have started buying BTC heavily. That is "centralizing" the network in the sense that a small powerful group will hold a significant amount of crypto, even though the network itself is decentralized.
