Next Generation Hardware Wallet

Hi everyone,
I thought I would ask the experts (you guys) what the most important features you take into consideration when buying a hardware wallet.  I have a cybersecurity tech start-up and want to build a product that meets YOUR needs.  If you could build your dream hardware wallet what would it come with? Your feedback is greatly appreciated.

Security is, of course the most important factor to consider when choosing a hardware wallet.  That's the point of a hardware wallet in the first place; to keep your private keys off-line, and prevent them from being exposed.  Without that you may as well just use a PC to access all your coins.

Ease of use should be the second consideration.  A wallet that's difficult to use could cause the owner to make mistakes.  The number coins that a wallet supports is up to the individual, but the two major brands support a boat-load of coins.

The most important thing is for it to be open source, it must be secured, I will prefer it to have bitcoin support but it will have it definitely but other coins are needed because many people will buy it because it support many coins. It must be safe to use, secure and have full protection against malware.

Taking opinions from bitcointalk users will be useless , the majority here have good experience and the things they are looking for may not be preferred by the average user. It is better to ask members to rate your project than to ask opinions.

For example, the majority here will focus on the open source, providing some privacy and good encryption features with some features such as coin Control, RBF and others.

Other people will focus on ease of use, GUI, "low fees" , many altcoins and quick profits.

features you take into consideration when buying a hardware wallet

Some ideas would be:

1. Secure
2. Fully compatible at least with BIP39
3. Open source
4. Inexpensive
5. [could be nice to have] Similar look to something inexpensive we already have (USB stick, garage remote, gameboy, name it)
6. [could be nice to have] Optional weatherproof box for it, maybe with the logo inside, not outside.

PS. I already have HW though, like many others who will answer this.

Edit: obviously you'll have to make deals with most important software wallet providers to interface with your HW.

There is never going to be a perfect hardware wallet device but there are several things I would look for before buying some new device:

- Wallet firmware and software must be open source with code audited by security experts.
- It would be a good idea to have Security Element second chip that is not closed source.
- Device must be able to connect with other open source wallets like Electrum, Wasabi, etc.
- Native wallet should have option for Tor support and privacy should be very important.
- Must fully support secure Multisig option.
- Optional Roll your own dices for seed creation.
- AirGap option should be considered.
- Wallet body should be made from metal and look similar like USB drives.

Rather than poll on what single item is the most important to users, I think you should ask users to rank all the items in order of priority. Then collate the results to get an indication of which items are considered by the majority to be the ones to focus on.

Personally... I would probably rank it as:
1. Security
2. Ease of Use
3. Price
4. Look
5. Number of currencies it supports
6. Touch Screen


But honestly... 4, 5 & 6 don't really bother me much... as long as you have 1, 2 & 3

Personally, I want to see a cheaper alternative for Nano X, or a secure card-based hardware wallet like keycard from Status. It must support a lot of crypto, easy to use, and affordable. I agree with hc, the aesthetic or touchscreen are not really a priority, at least for me.

3. Open source

This was my first thought, as the only thing I don't like about Ledger wallets is that their code is closed-source. 

I'm not sure how much you could improve on existing HW wallets, since Trezor and Ledger do pretty much everything anyone needing a HW wallet could ask for (at least that's true for me, and it's what I've observed from reading posts here).  One thing I'd love is if some of the more obscure coins could be added (like Curecoin, RDD, Neblio, and some others).  I get that this would probably be impractical, given how few people own those coins and use HW wallets, but it'd be nice to see nevertheless.

Fully open-source with a webcam (a cam with a privacy cover, ofc) and a display to work entirely as an airgapped wallet would do. Creating txs and signing them right from the device while never connecting at all to any external device. There are a few devices like this out there, but most of them either don't work with Electrum or they're not fully open-source..

An open-source and secure Trezor Model T type of device that doesn't cost around €180-190 would be nice. I included in the price VAT and/or shipping expenses just in case someone wonders.
When I bought my first hardware wallet several years ago, one of the advantages of Ledger was a relatively cheaper price. If the price was around the same level, I might have opted for a Trezor instead. I am sure I am not the only one.   

Things like looks, metallic case, design, or touchscreen are of secondary importance to me. The better it looks and the more features it has, the more expensive it will be. Security on #1, security on #2, then everything else.

Just look at what Cobo is doing and try to make it smaller, cheaper and more user friendly, if possible.
