I am curious to know what happens to a deceased account.
Does this platform have any way that a user will nominate who succeeds him in the eventuality of death?
If a Legendary dies with 8000 merits, do his legendary status and merits die with him?

There should be a way to maintain someone's legacy.
If not maintain, atleast transfer.
In companies shares are transferable and bequitable, can that work here.

On the forum you can reset someone's password from their email address.

Email access is normally given to someone's successor afaik or it can be claimed by them so the accounts can be recovered.

You can't compel someone to post though, if accounts die they get replaced. The forum hasn't been here long and might not be here much longer...

@Ebede, edit the opening post and remove the unnecessary spaces.

It is like you went to school and you were certified. Your certificate can not be used by anyone but you, and it is not useful again after death because no one can inherite certificate.

Consider this forum like that, merit is just like certificate representation of accounts here, although not the same. You should not even think of giving your Bitcointalk account to anyone, instead, help them how they can go about building their own account, just like the way you also will send your children to school to read and have their own certificates.

I think a process whereby the user don't have a somebody in lines with bitcointalk and again the password and is unknown to people surrounding the deceased account, that means the account will remain secured till infinity, but i was thinking in my perspective that it would be better for the moderators of forum to watch over an account that has no be active for interval of a year and six months and list them as a ghost account and report them to theymos for removal from bitcointalk data base, because people have died here and many are tired of using their account, i think those correlated accounts have to wiped.

There are legacy being made when they died or know to have been deceased. Im not sure how many have already but there is a position to those like Hal finney, and some members here. But not all are recognized, only those who have shared great contributions here. But I do hope some regular forum members were gonna be recognized too just in any case some known friends post it about them.

A deceased account is a deceased account. But there's really no such thing as a deceased account. The account remains here. It is inactive but posts made, threads opened, and so on are still available for anybody to see.

Anyway, if the owner dies, the account should also cease being active. That account wasn't anybody else's but the owner's. The achievements made were the owner's personal achievements. The merits were earned by nobody else but the owner. Those are not transferrable.

Whatever legacy that account left, if you truly want it preserved, that account shouldn't be transferred into the hands of another person.

As a matter of fact, it is appalling to see very old threads where discussions are rich and serious but a legendary account or two is already noticeably wearing a bounty signature. It is sad to see a very old account who used to be joining deep technical discussions now shitposting.

Deceased accounts will be as same as inactive or abandoned accounts.

If those accounts are not compromised for bad things, most commonly scam attempts, none of members in the forum will care about it.

Because it is absolutely difficult to prove that owners of accounts truly passed away. Even if some members share that information, it will be a challenge to verify that information.

It takes 4 years to prove that @paraipan's death is true

Why would that happen?
A BTT account is supposed to be private. You cannot sell it or transfer it to anyone. If one of the members is deceased then account will be consider inactive. BTT believe in privacy and therefore legacy of a private member will remain private.

You mean the account of a deceased person. I doubt that it’s something that is actually though out as part of anyone’s inheritance plan. Even using the account by a potential heir could be misleading, and may even potentially lead to some nasty stuff. In any case, there is no in-place mechanism for such cases, although in very specific cases, accounts have been locked and/or given a posthumous custom title (perhaps even anonymized in the past).

If a Legendary dies with 8000 merits, do his legendary status and merits die with him?
The account stays as is. The 8K merits obviously stay put, and that is a non-issue. You may perhaps be getting confused with sMerits (the actual sendable ones), which simply stay in the account unspent (another non-issue really).

There should be a way to maintain someone's legacy.
If not maintain, atleast transfer. <…>
Simply leaving the account untouched preserves the historical posting legacy, although one could always provide the access credentials in a will (a bit over the top though). I’d still prefer that other people don’t take over the control of other accounts, whatever the reason.

Bitcointalk forum doesn't have account nominations, there isn't a need. It's not right to ruin legacies by allowing others to post in accounts of the deceased.

If ever someone died and his account wasn't passed down to any of his relative or close friend, the account will more likely stay the way it is. If ever someone has an access on that deceased person's email that is connected to his account here, surely they can still access it once again. So if you don't want your bitcointalk account to go to waste specially if it already has a high rank, then find someone you can trust with who knows how to access it whenever an unexpected event like death occurs on you.

Of course, the amount of merit he receive will remain and will not decrease. But if someone knows the credential of the account then sMerit can still be sent.

There should be a way to maintain someone's legacy.
If not maintain, atleast transfer.
Merit that a person receive on his / her account can't be inherited or transferred to an heir because the merit is a system created to value and appreciate for post and contribution on the forum while he is alive. It is not like stock or other asset that are as valuable as you mean. If an account is passed on to an heir, it has changed hand because it is not operated by the same person and I think it could increase the risk of being unwanted in the future. If the death of the account owner can be verified by any users, then I have seen moderator can lock account forever and can't be activated again.

Hal died on August 28, 2014, but his relatives apparently have access to the account, so the account was active in early 2017.
Who should now communicate with his account? It is not right.
The account must be private.

We got "Hall of Fame" here though, but from the system of the forum itself, there isn't. There were recognizable members here that either died or left the forum for good. Here is one by tranthidung: Bitcointalk's Hall of fame
I am not sure if there's other thread similar to this.

Some legends in here that had passed away, not just a member with Legendary rank but recognized and established member as well, have the custom title of "In memoriam".

Pretty much nothing,it remains a dormant account forever unless say for an individual you have someone close like a spouse maybe a sibling etc and you have shared with them login credentials to use your account.

I would have suggested a self distract command for accounts sleeping for over 10 years but that would affect the history bitcointalk has made .
