Anti-virus software entrepreneur John McAfee has been found dead in a Barcelona prison cell hours after a Spanish court agreed to extradite him to the US to face tax evasion charges.

The Catalan Justice Department said prison medics tried to resuscitate him, but were not successful.

It said in a statement that "everything indicates" McAfee took his own life.

A controversial figure in the tech world, his company released the first commercial anti-virus software.

McAfee VirusScan helped to spark a multi-billion dollar industry in the computer world, and was eventually sold to technology giant Intel for more than $7.6bn (£4.7bn).

In October 2020, John McAfee was arrested in Spain when he was about to board a plane to Turkey, and accused of failing to file tax returns for four years, despite earning millions from consulting work, speaking engagements, crypto-currencies and selling the rights to his life story.

The US Justice Department alleged that McAfee evaded tax liability by having his income paid into bank accounts and cryptocurrency exchange accounts in the names of nominees.

He was also accused of concealing assets, including a yacht and real estate property, also in other people's names.

Spain's National Court authorised his extradition to the US to face the charges on Wednesday morning.

In recent years, McAfee repeatedly claimed that there was a plot to get him - however the court said there was "no revealing evidence" that he was being prosecuted for political or ideological reasons, Spanish newspaper El Pais reported.

A prominent libertarian, engaging speaker and crypto enthusiast, McAfee still had the ability to make money. His latest brush with law enforcement was due to alleged tax evasion on his recent earnings.

I still doubt he committed suicide, he was such a self-centric man and loved himself so much that it is not possible for someone like him to commit such a sin. I think there is more to this story!

It's shocking! John Mcafee was one of the strongest supporters of cryptocurrencies and a self made billionaire. The way he used to live his life, I doubt he had committed suicide. It can be a planned murder as well. In number of occasions, he had challenged US government in various matters. It could very well be a revenge for such deeds.

I am sure he was an outspoken guy and used to speak non sense many times, but his support towards cryptocurrency was really strong. This incident actually shows why we need freedom and privacy. Sad!

It was more of a joke. He actually committed quite a number of publicity stunts only to backtrack later:

In July 2017, McAfee predicted on Twitter that the price of a bitcoin would jump to $500,000 within three years, adding: "If not, I will eat my own dick on national television." In July 2019, he predicted a price of $1 million by the end of 2020. In January 2020, he tweeted that his predictions were "a ruse to onboard new users", and that bitcoin had limited potential because it is "an ancient technology."

A preliminary autopsy has confirmed that John McAfee, the famous antivirus creator, committed suicide in a Spanish prison, according to several sources close to the case who spoke to EL PAÍS. McAfee was found hanging from his cell last Wednesday by prison workers of Brians 2 penitentiary, located in Sant Esteve Sesrovires in the province of Barcelona. The 75-year-old had asked to spend time in his cell before he was found dead.

McAfee was in pre-trial detention after being charged with tax evasion by the United States. He had been in prison for more than eight months while Spain’s High Court, the Audiencia Nacional, considered the US’ extradition request for failing to file tax returns between 2014 and 2018. On Wednesday morning, McAfee’s lawyers told him that the court had decided to approve his extradition to the US and in the afternoon he killed himself, according to the investigation. The court’s decision, however, could have been appealed, and McAfee’s defense was already working on this process. According to the same sources consulted by EL PAÍS, McAfee left a suicide note in the pocket of his pants.

That's interesting, will it be the final verdict for people like me who still suspects that there's a foul play with his death.

But well then, if the autopsy says that it's a suicide and there's a suicide note indicating his hand writing and can be verified by his wife and his children. That will close the case.
