According to bitnodes and ethernodes, there are around 150 BTC public nodes and 400 ETH public nodes located in China.

CCP hasn't launched an ISP level blockade yet which is one of the few cards reserved in their hands.

Since BTC has 3000+ nodes in TOR (Can't tell how many ETH nodes in TOR) , I think users in China could still have access to full nodes then.

Based on their decisions they might as well just get on with it and ban Bitcoin every week.

As for Tor, can they even actually use it? As using VPNs are illegal as far as I know.

150 out of 10 000, barely 1% shutting them down is not even worth trying, if anyone in China wanted to connect to a full node they would have probably used a VPN even before this. As for tor unless you use bridges and update them continuously as they get blocked one by one you will never be able to use it. Plus the speeds are horrible, I doubt too much block distribution is happening in China over tor.

So no, this blockade would mean nothing, unless they trial a few bitcoin owners for god know what crime against society and shoot them there is nothing more that can come out of china.

China banning bitcoin is not important and I dare say nobody cares about what another country where they don't live in does to bitcoin or anything else. The FUD of China banning bitcoin is the problem and it will never go away even if not a single person in China used bitcoin! So in theory China can "ban bitcoin" every month as long as people are naive enough to believe the FUD.

Bitcoin is the only decentralized money in existence.

150 Bitcoin nodes running in China is nothing compared to total number of nodes, nobody can stop them and they can always switch to Tor if government choose to ban them with their firewall.
I also think that many people from China have vpn to access twitter, telegram, youtube and all other services that are blocked in their country.
This will not affect Bitcoin in any serious way and it's especially not important with number of ethereum nodes you mentioned.

I think that ban is crazy and hard to enforce. If Elon Musk provides satellite internet, that's not a problem because nodes have a different way to operate. Another point is that the nodes in China are low compared to the rest so there is no concern about the decentralization of Bitcoin and ETH.

Yes but VPN's still work in China. Even if it's banned people still use it. Therefore, I do believe that even if the authorities go ahead and ban bitcoins which is a major source of income for many people, I do think that they will continue to use it but ofc not on a large scale.

I think that ban is crazy and hard to enforce. If Elon Musk provides satellite internet, that's not a problem because nodes have a different way to operate. Another point is that the nodes in China are low compared to the rest so there is no concern about the decentralization of Bitcoin and ETH.

I do believe that the decentralization probelms is based not on this but actually on the laws that the government is making every second. How they are behaving with Bitcoins and other cryptocurrencies. Therefore the threat of centralization started from the day when they started asking for documents and banned VPN's.

China banning bitcoin is not important and I dare say nobody cares about what another country where they don't live in does to bitcoin or anything else. Last time also when they banned bitcoins the price fell for a short time and everything recovered. I do think the legalization of Bitcoins in countries like El Salvador should very well balance out this.

China has already done this twice I guess and although it dumped the price of bitcoin temporarily bitcoin recovered and proved that it doesn't need the approval of any particular country to be operated. So whether or not bitcoin is banned in China, it will still run as a decentralized network and until the internet itself is completely shut, there's no stopping to bitcoin.
So there's basically nothing to worry about as bitcoin is here to stay.

That’s the same thing with every country, if you’re using VPN to access a website that the government has declared illegal then it is illegal. I don’t think VPN itself is what is illegal in China, it is what you’re using it for; if you use it for something illegal, then it is illegal.

Take for example, if their government should say that cryptocurrency is illegal and nobody should access it, and then their citizens tries to make use of VPN to bypass that, then it is illegal. And that’s the same thing with every other countries, if you’re using VPN for something illegal, that makes it illegal as well.

That news of banning bitcoin from time to time in China and releases that news is just getting exhausted and becomes unimportant already.
We shouldn't be worried anymore if they shutdown their entire country and those news are just becoming FUD to bring worry to you.
Expect that they won't stop reporting that news of banning whether it's the ICOs, bitcoin, NFT, Defi, etc.

In theory there is still another China ban waiting to be launched.
Don't be shocked, Mate. Because China always has an idea for Bitcoin.
You may see the latest bad news about China ban? And this country has been doing this for years ago.
It is not only about like or dislike crypto but it is about business, politics, and also other specific reasons.

And about those 150 BTC public nodes, just don't really take in mind. I know that it may make some people panic moreover with the China Ban news again. However, as what has been said by members above, the number is only a few amounts of the total nodes.

Once more, there will be always any FUID every time and don't take it very seriously that can lead you or other people to panic.

AFAIK Chinese geek people are using both to open the gates of the forbidden lands beyond the sacred open-air prison. Obviously being caught means something close to Kim educational style.
I am pissed with their arrogant attitude towards cryptocurrencies. They want to launch a virtual ¥, go on and make it popular without trying to destroy everything. Seeing Bitcoin far from their centralised control make them angry. Not sure what left for them to ban? The word Bitcoin from the dictionary?

yeah, we don't care if they will ban because they are not the one who holds the future of crypto. In fact, almost every day we hear banning coming from them but look, we still survive and even grow more. That will emphasize that we don't need China anymore and we are not affected too much unlike before. They don't want crypto and so the community doesn't want people who wanted to control the market.

It is not the logic of CCP.
In China, establishing international communication channels(VPN e.g.) without the permision from authority is illegal. (So placing a satelite receiver in China to download bitcoin blocks from blockstream satelite is illegal as well)
While China gov never declared twitter, facebook or bitcointalk illegal. They just block them using GFW and they never admit they block those sites.
But if anyone in China wants to explore those sites without permision, one has to violate the law.

Some VPN providers in China are actually those guys who set up GFW.

China ban everything they think are harmful for their regime, not for their nation or their people. You can search in history that how many times China ban cryptocurrency. FUD news I meant.

Everyone is free to use Tor and to set up full node with Tor. China and other nations can not ban you to use Tor.

as long as bitcoin can't be controlled by the Chinese government, I'm very sure there will be another ban that China will do against bitcoin, because we all know China will definitely ban all forms that cannot be controlled by their government, but whatever their efforts to ban bitcoin, I don't think their efforts will succeed, because bitcoin has grown, and there are many people who hold bitcoin..

It's been a long time since those news came out already banning bitcoin and everything in China. Whatever is true and legitimate, there's no easy way to stop them unless those are just made and stories have been fabricated and changed from the actual scene in China. Manufacturers and suppliers are from there so there's really no sense to think about how bad this news is. If you got to hear of this typical news years ago, you'll probably exhausted too.

Could BTC node bans be a cost effective measure?

American politicians were proposing the united states implement an internet kill switch and great firewall of china as of 10 years ago. There is a question of whether heavy handed authoritarian crackdowns on nodes might sour public opinion on the policy of states exhibiting greater control and regulation over the internet.

There is much invested in a marketing campaign which says greater state based regulation and control leads to prosperity, wealth and a brighter future. China banning nodes could have a detrimental effect on that campaign.

While bans on crypto mining might affect bitcoin's price due to hash rate decline, a ban on nodes wouldn't have as much of an effect. It could even produce incentive for chinese in crypto who run nodes to leave the country and immigrate elsewhere.

Overall a chinese ban on nodes, could be more damaging to china than it is to bitcoin.

I'd ask if any bans of this type are effective.

They banned exchanges in 2015 and exchanges moved abroad.
They banned businesses from using bitcoin in 2018 and they moved abroad and registered in other countries.
They banned mining in 2021 and miners are moving abroad.
