A suggestion for Highlighting Posts.

I was thinking what could be the alternative to Highlight good posts if they aren't merited, because most of us can't read each and every post of the topic especially if there are 100s of pages.

Then I thought what about implementing a new feature that allows users (Jr Member Rank+) to give point certain points to a post, (unlike merit these points will not affect the ranks of the users who made the post that was given points to.)

And let's say after 50 points the post is highlighted with color until and unless it's merited. Other users can Point-Up or Point-Down that post will affect the total points at the moment.
The number of Points a certain individual can give to the post will be based on how many merits they have.
For example, users who have earned -
10-50 Merits can give out 1 Point
50-99 Merits can give out 5 Points
100 Merits can give out 10 Points
1000 Merits can give out 100 Points


Also, We can have a section on the forum that ranks topics with most points that aren't merited. In case the posts are unworthy to get merits then Users with more merits can cancel out the points of the posts(s) by Pointing-Down. For example - 50 Points by 50 different Jr to Member ranks can be canceled out by 5 Full Members or more based on merits.

I know it's somewhat like the system Reddit has but it'll be good to highlight the posts, would love to hear other suggestions.

Up until now I've seen the local boards get a lot of hate because of being small and this might exacerbate their problems.

I'm also not sure how these users will find those posts too. A lot of sources get to a lot of topics anyway (and quite a wide variety) but would you then bump up the good posts? Make something similar to the "patrol" page for sources? Wouldn't a "send to source" button make more sense accessible to users with 10+ merit?

That would be a bit of an effort to make the forum look like a rainbow with different highlighted posts combined with colors from signatures  

Anyway we do have a much easier solution for Unmerited good posts. If you ever find one, just report it to this thread -  [self-moderated] Report unmerited good posts to Merit Source. I am very sure if the post is awesome, merit sources won't ignore meriting it.

Before looking for a solution, a problem has to exist or an existing system becomes inadequate, I don't think either is the case here. The merit system has been working effectively for a long time now and there's no real shortage of merits to go around (although it's been a while I saw a source ask for more smerits). Creating an upvote-downvote system is not really necessary and could complicate the entire merit system.

Also, We can have a section on the forum that ranks topics with most points that aren't merited.

There's a designated thread for that (link above), which allows for replies as well as thread starters to be nominated for merits

I would prefer it if we had a filter option to only include the OP and replies that have got merits. That would filter out the nonsense and allow for easier reading of the more important posts. I don't wish to see highlights everywhere though as that would just be tedious on the eyes.

I do like that some forums have a question and answer style format which the member that asked the question can select a reply for the solution which allows people who had the same problem go straight to the solution that worked for the person who opened the thread. I would like to see a question and answer board which has this feature included.

There is a lot of posts which repeat the same thing and being able to filter those out by only seeing posts which have been merited would be a solution to a problem since reading the same thing over and over again gets tedious. I think that is a problem on this forum and while the repeated posts might not be valid to delete they are still clogging up the forum.

Although I partially agree with this opinion, I am not sure whether the upvote / downvote system would have the desired effect. Such a system would favor like-minded posts on a particular topic and would suppress any opinions that goes beyond general consensus.

Yup main reason being, A good post existing but is ignored on page 99 of a topic that has 500 Pages in it and it's hard to time finding those let alone highlighting them.
Also, I'm not sure if the merit source's job is to keep on finding the meritable posts the whole day and it's quite embarrassing for someone to post their own post on the LoyceV's Thread of unmerited posts

I also mean, good posts aren't the only ones that have a huge count in characters. Sometimes a single line of post can explain 100 other posts.

Quality is subjective, so what one person finds to be of high quality, another may not, merit is also not only given for quality posts, some can give them to witty or funny replies.
There is also merit sales still going on. So filtering by merits would not be a good metric to determine quality, one would also need to filter through lots of threads in local boards whose language they do not understand.

this is how I understood OP also.
it seems to me that in this way account farmers would have a significant advantage. we would be even more burdened by the boost of meaningless posts.
Also, more "power" in the hands of users with 1000+ merit would be a reason to start new conflicts "conspiracy theorists vs. forum gangs". I don't think it's necessary, the merit system is working well enough for now.

The merit system works but there are still abuses and some people use merit as likes, agreement. I think it is enough and it is unnecessary to have points to highlight good posts.

If your mind is not covered with merit, you will not mind of it because you do know you will rank up, with your good posts.

I'm hoping that this system will increase post quality by:
 - Forcing people to post high-quality stuff in order to rank up. If you just post garbage, you will never get even 1 merit point, and you will therefore never be able to put links in your signature, etc.
- Highlighting good posts with the "Merited by" line.

While we will not be directly moderating this, I encourage people to give merit to posts that are objectively high-quality, not just posts that you agree with.

There is one thing that you can do to "highlight" good threads in a particular board and that is sorting the threads according to views in a descending order. It's only logical that a good thread has more views than a bad thread who no one wants to read. Instead of sorting threads from newest to oldest, which is the default way the forum categorizes them, sort them according to the number of views.

Just click on 'Views' as shown below until you see an arrow that points downwards. That will help you with the threads. Unfortunately, it doesn't do anything when it comes to highlighting individual posts.

Your ideas is tangible from my own aspect of comprehension and it what to emulate, but it's very difficult for such to be adopt, right now it's very rall before you can see people meriting past quality post, and before such quality post can be fine from users profile unless the person in particular or someone have to post or comment on the thread before it will be viewed or noticeable for community user's to be Merit, I think the best solution to make your quality posts to be visible to people if no one is commenting there any longer, "is to Bump it" And i think their is existing section here if your merit remaining at least twenty or ten (20-10) Merits to reach some certain position, people there will help by awarding Merit to the user that's in needs of merit to secure such rank, this time it hardly before you see someone digging into someone's profiles to Merit it.
