Those are 2 completely different questions:

1) yes, you could (theoretically) create a wallet using an old electrum version... If the version is to old, most nodes will reject your connection tough. I don't see a reason why you'd do this tough

2) yes, you could use your (old) seed in a new wallet, even if the new wallet is using a more recent electrum version

Just make sure you

• write down the current electrum version and save your wallet
• write down the seed phrase and have it at hand
• make sure you download electrum from electrum . org
• make sure you verify the signature

By executing these steps, not much can go wrong... Even if you mess up writing down the seed phrase, you still have the original wallet and versionnumber at hand.

I think what OP is asking is whether he needs to change to new wallet, or whether his old wallet created prior to 3.3.4 is safe to keep using.

It is the Electrum software, not your wallet, which is susceptible to phishing. As long as you have downloaded and verified an up to date version of Electrum from https://electrum.org/, then you are absolutely fine to open your old wallet files or restore your old wallets from their seed phrase and continue using them. You do not need to create a new wallet.

Electrum 3.0.4 and below had an unprotected RPC. If you were to access any webpage and the webpage sends a CORS preflight request, then your seeds will get compromised.

Out of an abundance of caution, I would probably create a new wallet if you used your wallet before 3.0.5. After that, the vulnerability was the phishing through the rich text. If you didn't click on any links and download any files through Electrum, you're okay.

You can create a wallet on any version you are at. The standard for generating electrum seeds never changed as far as I know and therefore, will be possible to recover a hierarchical deterministic wallet given any version. This warning doesn't have to do with that, read ranochigo's answer and this: Electrum vulnerability allows arbitrary messages, phishing.

Seeds created in earlier versions did not include a version number, and also required a fixed wordlist which was different to the BIP39 wordlist. These seeds will not necessarily recover properly in recent versions of Electrum. Version 2.0 was released in March 2015, though, so it's probably unlikely that OP is using a seed phrase created by a version of Electrum prior to this.

electrum maintains backwards compatibility with all old seed mnemonics. you can restore a pre 2.0 wallet in the latest electrum.

OP you can use the same wallet file as in your old version. You can also restore from seed but you won't have to. Electrum will find your old wallet files and upgrade them as needed.

Old 12 word seed phrase which Electrum itself generated, yes. But older versions of Electrum allowed users to hand pick their seed phrases or "extend" their seed phrase by adding additional words on to the end. Such seed phrases will not necessarily restore properly in recent versions of Electrum. See the following GitHub issues for example:

You should make sure to download the latest version, and its associated signature files, from this site: https://electrum.org/#download
Once you've done that, you need to verify the download against the signatures. There are good guides on how to do that at the following links:

Probably the best solution. Just know that you should still be able to import your old wallet without issue should you need to recover funds from it.
