If the family is falling apart then it is likely that there are more serious problems within the family than gambling addiction.

I see one reasonable option for spending such a large part of income on gambling - if a person has huge savings and current income does not have much influence on his life, then if he wants, he can even spend 100 percent on gambling. All other options look dubious to me, although I am not saying that this is an addiction, just a wrong decision (in my subjective opinion).

Only those person who has a huge savings and current income are for sure who has also the guts to over spend or lets say it is only a part of their excess money. For them it was an excess money but for us or personally speaking for me a 20% of income to allot for my entertainment or gambling activities is such a huge amount. We may take over spending as gambling addiction which is definitely true but for me I look for myself a sign of not having a good sleep at night while keep on thinking of my gambling activities.

The general rule is that, only gamble away the money that you are willing to spend on. If you rely on gambling as a means for a source of income, then chances are that you would lose more money on the process.

Remember that if you rely on a source of income that is measured by odds and risks, then there can be no absolute stable flow of income on your end. You would end up having to bet more than you actually planned for which can result in accumulation of long term debts.

risk of being addicted and losing a lot of money is possible.

Control and make sure to always assess yourself if you still playing according to your set up plans, and you are not exceeding to your limits.

Well noticed KTChampions That is indeed true that this list applies to everyone in dire strait for whatever possible reason. Maybe with one exception though. If you fulfill the five points on that list permanently for years, you could actually argue that you are addicted to working. There is also a fine line, but working is just not as negatively connoted as gambling of course. I do know people who are for sure addicted to sports or their job and lose sight of the rest of their lives. Would I call it an addiction? Hm, difficult, maybe kind of.

When it comes to addiction it has lots of consequences where you said are true. when people became addicted to it, they will find any way to play and sometimes in the wrong way and this is the scariest thing to happen to a person when he won't hesitate to do anything just to play where the others have gone crazy up to stealing someone's property is nothing to them just to suffice their hunger to play and that's the kind of person you don't want to live with because you will suffer as well when things not going right with him.

When I was a gambling addict, I still have good time with my family and friends, but if they noticed me very well, they will be able to know that something was going wrong because gambling addicts are often affected by mood swing, they can be happy and laughing before, but after checking their phone or computer, their mood will just change and become unhappy, if happening repeatedly, that is a sign your family member of friend is affect by gambling. Yes, I did skipped meals, yes can skip bathing, if I lost. I skip sleep very well, but that is my nature.

When in terms of stealing or even loaning money just for the sake of gambling, or worse, trying to cope up with losses that's already a good sign that you are really attached that much in this activities and it will lead you directly into addiction.

It's tough situation when you are in the middle of this, trying to win back your losses but at the end of the day you'll lose more.

You have to track this one and you need to have a strong mindsets countering this feelings, you need to find other activities to prevent getting things worse to the point that you can no longer control the situation.

Yes, I understand that stealing money is a sign of gambling addiction, just like this thread's title. However, I just want to say that the sign isn't 100% reliable. Stealing money and then gambling may just be a one shot desperate attempt to win something because he really needs the money.

IMO addiction is more about frequency, about how often someone spends his time gambling. But still, you should go to the psychiatrist to determine (with higher accuracy) if you have this addiction problem.

Exactly! I don’t get why people state that gambling addiction ruins families so often, that says a lot about the willingness of family members to help each other overcome problems. In some cases, there can be alcohol or drug abusers, or people with psychiatric disorders, but you don’t abandon them for that, IMO it’s very wrong.

I will have to disagree, I have seen some instances of people getting addicted to alcohol and I have seen their family members fight to the best of their ability to keep the family intact, but if one of the family members is so dysfunctional then sometimes there is no other choice, this is not a decision that is taken lightly and it takes years to take form, after all the partner that is not addicted also has to think on the well-being of the rest of the family especially if there are kids involved, also sometimes that is the wake up call those that are addicted need to get out of addiction as they realize they have lost everything because of it.
