Sometimes when members make a thread, I go through comments  and I see some persons on the comments section that the OP made the thread all because he/she wants  merits. Yes, the truth is that we all want merit in every thread we make. The goal of every member in Bitcointalk forum is to make a thread that will generate merit. Merit is like an award here and no one wouldn't like to gain an award.

Everyone wants a merit. Telling a member that he made a thread because he wants merits is like telling someone he is hunting for a job because he needs money, and true everyone wants money and everyone desire is to gain merit in a giving write up .
If a thread should be made by a member and you think it is not okay by you, go ahead and make your point or tackle that thread  than to say it was made because of merit.

Does everyone need merits though? Merits are things that are not necessary for discussing on the forum the only benefit to merits is ranking up which many people will not care about. This is a discussion based forum and the only ones that care about ranking up are those that find the restrictions in place here to be too restrictive at lower account levels and those that want to join signature campaigns however I do agree that it becomes annoying that everyone has to point out one after another that the person was probably fishing for merit there is also the counter argument that this should be made aware of to prevent members from meriting members which do not have good intentions and merely want to rank up themselves because as soon as they rank up they are probably going to go back to shitposting.

They are things that worth to be overlooked, like "merit system" A Merit system is just a criteria for we to acertain a certain level, what's really necessary and encouraging via the community is a positive ideas that will enhance for the development of cryptocurrency not really a merit, a merit never be an option because with our positive contribution portrayed for the betterment of the community, merit can be earned or accompanying with our positive ideas rendered, so it's obvious that everyone likes merit, but I'm not disputing the fact that is not nice to earn a Merit but let us not be over inquisitive, desperate or indulge in paraphrasing, plagiarism in order to earn a Merit.

Have you seen any quality post before that ranked member post that the user is looking for merit?

There are account farms, some people are looking for merits and their posts are not having quality, some spam while some just post in a way they can not be given merits.

Such statement can not be posted if the user is having quality post, try to know more about this forum before opening a thread like this.

You're constructing your thoughts wrongly, the thing is whenever a user gets merited, there's a slight excitement that comes along with it, cause I mean, you'd have to feel good that someone else appreciated what you posted and that it's of medium or high quality, then for the average poster, it would excite them cause they will feel and know that they are improving on their posts; but your misconception is in saying that it's the 'sole goal' of every user, cause it's not, while we sure would like someone to appreciate our posts, we should be more concerned in developing our general knowledge, not earning merits, cause if you garner sufficient Bitcoin knowledge, then merits will come effortlessly, thus making it the better choice.

The thing is that one can't actually state categorically what the idea behind a users post is, but then again, there are posts that straight away just seem and look like merit hunting, such posts usually don't stimulate discussions, it adds little or nothing to users knowledge and is usually just about a generic thing that has been discussed time without number, if users don't like the idea of being called merit hunters, they should basically just stop writing out posts of that nature.

You haven't seen enough members here to make that claim. You'll be surprised that there are members who doesn't give a shit about merit and the monetary benefits like wearing a signature from ranking up.

I have seen merited topics that were created with the sole purpose of learning like asking help regarding wallets.

For me, I don't blame in an inappropriate thread. You can't ignore a few users create a thread just for hunting merits and this isn't a good practice at all. Expecting merits for the thread is nothing wrong. But with ZERO contributions on the thread or just repeating someone else content doesn't deserve merits from me by the way. So don't create a pointless topic and don't expect merit there. Users not just blame for merits, but also pointing your mistakes as well. Don't take it seriously, rather than just take a lesson from there which would help your future contributions.

People make thread because either they want to be helpful to users in here or want to start a conversation, as long as the topic is still relevant and constructive. Merit is just the reward of it.

Everyone needs money to buy their needs to survive. Your account does not need merit/s here in the forum to survive or not get banned, just follow the rules and you're all good.

When users are accused of merit hunting, it's usually because they made a post with the sole aim of baiting other members to give them merit and not to add value to the community; Like a newbie mirroring introductory messages of others which for them merits or posting random threads about the forum, other members and the merit system without returning to join any of the discussions, such habits come off very like merit hunting.
Merits and hunting for a job do not quite fit, you need a job in real life but do not expect a pat on the back for every comment you make daily, treat this forum as your daily conversations, just about a certain related topics.

The title of this thread seems to deny the inevitable at some point in a users history or journey in the forum. I suppose I was guity of this crime at a time, as a matter of fact were. Those of us who met the merit and activity system in place and its mostly at the member stage and I sat this not because of the OP. Though, I ensured my post did count because, I often do better in my write ups when I'm more emotional about it. That's how I go about it, as I've got to be in my writing.

So, merit hunting is no strange thing and as an act that someone cannot actually be proud of, one can only sense or be left to feel what he or she would feel about a post. Just like how a quality post is determined, in the same way, one can determined or have a feeling on when a post is actually created for merit purposes.

Ehh, a lot of times it's extremely obvious that a certain thread was made solely just to hopefully get some merits. Especially those that you can obviously see was purposely made longer just to show that there was effort put in(and don't get me started on those "hown to earn merit" threads by people with like 0 merits). They thought they're being slick, but in actuality it's really really obvious.

You are talking about only account farmers not all bitcointalk users. This is also why none of them have high amount of merit because most of the times it is too obvious who is farming and who is making an actual contribution worthy of the reward.

This is the perfect definition of merit fishing, one post 4 lines of text and then wait for somebody to merit that topic, drop the bait and wait for merit, engaging in a discussion on a forum which the last time I checked is exactly done for that unlike Facebook posts seems to be clearly no.

Let's just say.. this thread is a bit suspicious. I always try to give the benefit of the doubt but it's hard to not be suspicious when the topic is about merits and defending a specific "type" of users.

Yes of course. Even they denied it no one here doesnt want merit. However they dont practically shows that they need of merits just for helping others. Theres a difference with that from someone literally wanting merit.

This is not merittalk.org where you post all kinds of threads you want just to earn merit. Everyone does want merit but it doesn't mean we are here just to earn merit but to contribute in this forum in any way we can. I am once like you where I want to post a thread just to earn merit but I realised that this is bitcointalk forum where a place we can share, help and contribute. Due to people who post shit and spam made theymos implement merit system to make it stop if not possible then make it less compared before according to what I have learned.

The forum gives us freedom so you can create any topic you want but forum members can say their thoughts about your thread.

Don't feel bad if others say their thoughts that can make you upset. If you receive opinion that make you upset, the first thing to do is checking your topic and its quality. Be honest that why you make that topic.

If your topic repeats what has been discussed many times, in many topics, yours are unnecessary. Forum members can think you are hunting for merit.
