I bought a used Antminer S9 with a APW3++ PSU.

Plugged it into the wall (I'm in US, so 120V) and ethernet into the router, and the thing turns on.

I check on my router devices and see the 192.168.x.x IP address, but when I go to the browser the admin panel never loads.

While I'm trying to figure this out, the PSU occasionally gives out and the miner turns off. The lights turn off, it's not just the fan turning down.

Then the power supply starts clicking. Normally I'd wonder if this means it's bad, but after a minute or so it fires back up again and the fan starts up.

This cycle repeats forever.

Anyone know what the hell might be going on?

At 110V voltage, the max power output for APW3++ is 1200W. So you do not have enough power capacity for a S9.
You need to plug it in to a 220V circuit or buy an additional psu.

In the case of using another psu together with APW3++ you need to be very careful. Plug the APW3++ for two hash boards. Plug the other psu for one hash board and control board. Do not plug the psus to same hash board, if there is a direct connection between the psus, they will start to "fight" each other.

Power on the psu connected to the control board LAST.

In addition to what HagssFIN said you can do a test.
Plug the APW3++ into the controller AND ONLY THE CONTROLLER.
The fans should spin and the miner should boot and in a minute or 2 you should have access to the web page of the controller.
If not there there is another issue.

If that works power it off and connect power to ONE hash board and repeat the process.
It should give an error because it can't find the other 2 hash boards but should mine.

Repeat the process for the other 2 hash boards making sure that only one is plugged in at a time.

If all 3 work then yes you just do not have enough power.

It could be a difference in the way that they were made, but when I tried to pull more power then they could supply from my APW3++ they shut down but would not power back up without pulling the AC power and plugging it back in.

-Dave

Or if you can afford you can buy a step-up transformer to run them at 220v-240v or hire a professional Electrician to install a 220v outlet in your house.

How many s9 miners did you buy? If it's only one s9 then it's not worth hiring a professional Electrician.

The suggested above might work I heard that there is someone here mining with only one hashboard on 120v.

When buying a transformer, avoid anything called a "travel converter " or "international travel converter" that look like this. Been there, done that and they are CRAP which will burn out very quickly. They are not able to sustain anything near their supposed ratings.

Only use ones that are either commercial or industrial grade such as these as they are properly designed and made to deliver rated power 24x7x365.

no transformers not safe.

the apw3++ can do only 850 watts on 120 volts.

the transformer is costly as fuck. and will melt wires if it is quality and can pull a lot more watts on you 120 volt line.

just plug in 1 hashboard.

@Phil

But according to Bitmain, APW3++ can do 1200W with 110V mains voltage.

I fully agree with throwing the transformer ideas to trash bin.

I guess it should not be too expensive to have an electrian wire a 220V  circuit.

Much easier to think 850 since it is likely used .

My house has both 120 and 240

I have found that it can't run three boards. Even if slightly downvoted on the 120 volt circuits

But that they can always do two boards.

He should do two boards and see what it does. If it works and he has the correct t bitmain firmware.

He can clock -2th and try three boards.

The firmware is called "multi-option user firmware" under the name "Antminer-S9-xilinx-201907302037-autofreq-user-Update2UBI-NF-sig.tar.gz", the -2TH will put him at about 1000w, not sure if that will help, he would probably need to disconnect one board.

yeah used Apw3++ vary on  what they will tolerate when they are running on 120 volts.

I have had them put out only 750 and or as high as 1050 watts.

They are good for close to 1600 on 240.

I lot depends if the 120 is doing 108 to 111 due to brown out conditions. Or if you are near 117-121 volts.

I sometimes struggle in the 850 watt range. with my L3+ when I test them in my garage on the 120 volt circuits .
