Ability to Block Users

Most sites nowadays have the ability to block users.  This feature would be a great addition to this site.  Granted, you can ignore users now, but they can still pollute threads and troll unabashed without fear of any action to be taken because the trolling rules put in place here aren't enforced.  It would be great if I could just block users desperate for my attention so that they are unable to troll in any fashion.  It's a pretty basic feature that will cut down on trolling and on the ability of these trolls to find each other and team up for trust and merit circles which has become way too commonplace here and has absolutely destroyed any credibility of the default trust network.

I only see this working reasonably for PMs, which already has such a feature BTW (on the old software, so epochtalk can reasonably be expected to have this too) since threads are publicly searchable so normal users can't really stop others from replying on threads (unless it's their self-mod thread).

I believe the block feature on most platforms is not much different from that on the forum and would not stop trolls creating multiple threads. If I blocked a user on Twitter for example, they would not be able to access my profile or interact directly with me and vice versa, if I ignored a user on this forum, they would be able to see my posts and profile as normal, but I can't see their posts or replies. In both cases they can still make as much threads as possible, only that I can't see them.

The suggestion wouldn't prevent them from creating their own threads, but would prevent them posting in the person who's blocked them threads, which would probably be beneficial for certain users. At the moment, ignored users can still post, while if they go off topic or troll then they should be reported, it might help in certain situations where it might not be deemed trolling, its on topic enough, but the thread creator doesn't want them in their thread, and doesn't want to use a self moderated approach. Like I said I can see it being useful for a small amount of situations, for a limited group of users rather than a feature that would benefit the majority. Although, there are other ways of going about it, self moderated, and reporting being some of them, but I can see the benefits to this; since it would likely prevent arguments which inevitably goes off topic.

I created a script you can run in your self moderated threads that will automatically delete posts from users you do not want to post in your thread.

It would be nice if the forum would do this automatically and would prevent a list of users from posting.

While that’s cool no doubt, I’d rather if certain individuals who have been shown to act inappropriately lost the right to view my posts or have me continue to know they exist by seeing their name even while ignored. I think the threat of irrelevance from those whose attention is being sought is probably the best way to fight the trolling problem here as the “freedom of speech” cop out for not being willing to moderate trolling according to the forum’s stated rules is beyond old and has resulted in a profound loss of talent from these boards over the last decade.

OgNasty: while I do like the suggestion I can see an endless number of brand new accounts being created to troll a user. You'd end up being spammed relentlessly and wouldn't be able to say for certain who is doing it and have to play whack-a-mole blocking endless numbers of accounts.

I do like PrimeNumber7's script concept and was wonder if that strips old posts out of a self-moderated thread? Or, is it only on new posts after the script has been implicated? (And, does it work if you're not online?).

For the moment at least I have some users on ignore and although I see their name I don't see their post, so for me they are mostly out of sight and out of mind.

It will review the entire thread and remove offending posts.

I don't think blocking can work unless it's done by moderators, otherwise these trolls would still be able to create posts anyway.

In addition, there are many cases where members were banned from the forum, but these troublemakers immediately created new accounts and returned to the forum under different names.

I don't think you got what OP was trying to suggest

He wants a feature where you can block any troll, and he won't be able to see your past and future posts, he won't be able to reply to your past a future threads etc. Right now what we have is just an ignore button

Of course someone can create a new account and continue trolling but then you can also block him buy a click of one button and so on.


Where i think this feature will have some trouble will be when it comes to the trust system. Most especially the trust feedback and flags.

Yes indeed I missed the intended meaning Thank you for the clarification.

This is similar to the ban on WhatsApp or Facebook, yes, but the situation here is different. As I understood through your explanation, the negatives are greater than the positives.

In addition to the negatives that you mentioned, the troll can block a member and then write an offensive topic to this member and spread lies, and therefore the accused member will not be able to defend himself against this abuse. This is also a big negative.

That's a great idea but let's look at it this way, what if it is done out of hate or envy and others find the person's post or comment or reply to your post interesting and because you despise that person you just have to wipe it off. I'm just saying because we're all humans and there's no place that we don't have hate or this irritating habit on others.
I would love to say it should only be done by high ranked members but it's still the same thing, some might abuse it.

Looking at the present situation on the Reputation Child board, I believe such a feature would work wonders for this forum. Considering the present topics the user in question and the user who has many negative trusts will again come up with a new ALT ID. The way this scenario is going around I think the forum should add this Block user, similar to ignore link, In the end, the mods should decide about the outcome of the result forwarded to them using the Block Users ability. I am not sure whether this feature would be accepted. I believe a feature like this would stop such stupidity and not degrade the reputation of this forum.

The ignore option is already doing well if your problem is users trying to get your attention, you can just put then on ignore and they are literally don't exist to you anymore.

It's almost similar to what a block feature would be doing, unless you want dint want to exit to those users too.
