Oh, come on.  Do you think Theymos really takes into account any altruistic motives when someone is requesting a name change?

It may be... I am sure theymos has his own reasons for when he accepts such a request and when not... But I think, in this case, it was an altruistic decision...

It might appear to be the case with OP, but when it's also an option to pay for the name change (admittedly nobody is going to pay 50BTC these days for that privilege) I seriously doubt that's much of a factor.

Well, this is the problem here... OP had an altruistic request and, as much as he'd also want to protect some innocents, he could not pay 50 BTC for that... Probably theymos took this also into consideration...

As much as I appreciate Theymos for keeping the forum alive, I don't believe for one minute that he'd move a muscle to stop scammers on telegram.  Just look at how they flourish on his own forum and that should be enough to prove my point.

Yes, sadly, scammers are everywhere... But I don't think that he just thought about scammers from Telegram. I think he just did a gesture in sign of good faith, trying to help some people... I don't know how to say... but as a comparison think of this: imagine a good cop, walking in his free day, outside his jurisdiction... and he assists at a theft... and he decides to get involved, to catch the robber. Robbers are everywhere and such gestures are rare - the cop was in his free day and also outside his jurisdiction, but if he just felt at that moment that he can help and he also wanted to help... he just did it... This does not mean robbers will ever be scared by cops being on duty nor about cops being off duty. They'll still rob people... But, from time to time, such gestures occur...

I may be wrong, of course, or too naive, as I still believe in people acting on good faith to help others, but this is what I think...

I may be wrong, of course, or too naive, as I still believe in people acting on good faith to help others, but this is what I think...
I don't want to stray too far off topic (which I already did with my last post), but I wish Lauda was still around to give some input on what I wrote.  I have no doubt my claims would be backed up if Lauda felt able to speak freely.

And I'm not claiming to be able to read Theymos's mind, so who knows if there was a desire to help with no expectation of something in return?  It probably sounds like I'm bitter that he wouldn't grant my request but did grant OP's, but it isn't that.  I'm perfectly OK with hanging on to my original moniker; I just happen to think that Theymos wouldn't do this for just anyone claiming to have (or actually having) a telegram impersonator or for any other reason that would help stop scammers.  I don't think he's anti-scammer at all, in fact.  What I think he is is a true cryptoanarchist, and if that means scammers win, then they win.

But if they threaten the forum or its reputation, then he'll act to suppress them (like Yobit and 1xbit.com and/or their campaigns).  So far, they've been allowed to survive and thrive here because members have just accepted the excuses as to why scammers aren't banned, which they are on pretty much any other discussion forum.

Anyway, enough of my rant.  Name changes are supposed to be rare, else everyone would be requesting them and I'm sure Theymos doesn't want that, and that's understandable.  I'm genuinely happy for OP that he got to change his to upper-case letters (though if I were essentially forced to change my username to all caps, I think it'd drive me nuts).

@The Pharmacist, maybe you just caught the admin at the wrong time, it's possible that your request went under the radar - because I know that at least a dozen (probably more) members have changed their names. In your place, I would try again, because if you really want something (and you obviously care about it), the only way is to be persistent, of course within the bounds of polite behavior.

Nah, Theymos knows I wanted my username changed because I PMed him and created a thread about it, in addition to making posts in various threads relating to my request that he could possibly have read.  If I'm met with stony silence after all of that, I'm certain he's not going to let me change my moniker.

It's not a huge deal and not something I'm going to bug Theymos about, especially not after writing stuff like I just did in this thread.  I'd much rather feel free to do the latter than to kiss any ass in order to get my way.

My 2 cents ...

OP, Firstly, congratulations on the name change, I have not read the past pages of this thread but I believe that Sceptical Chymist is furious (envious). Secondly, I took into account the reasons you described, but nevertheless, I am almost sure that changing your name will not benefit your business, at least for the reason that no one likes Caps Lock.

I don't think it is appropriate to draw a personal parallel, especially since changing the username in this particular case essentially does not change anything except visual perception. In addition, I am absolutely sure that if you do business on the forum, there are much simpler ways to protect your clients from fraud. But scam moderation is a completely different matter, as it hides a false sense of security, and I think if all the threads you mentioned were deleted, then due to the lack of warnings, we would have faced even more negativity. In addition, given the current state of affairs, I am not at all sorry for those who fall for the tricks of these scammers, since it is obvious that these people ignore basic precautions. In the sense that it is useful for such naive people to step on a rake, since this is the only lesson they can learn.
