You mean some twitter verified account got hacked and changed it's name to elon musk or any famous people. There are lots of the same incidents happened before. It just that many people are still ignorant for such obvious scheme, even though they knew it's a too good to be true offer but it just happens that they were more greedy and now this happens. It's just that people never learned.

It's all about scale for scammers. There are all kinds of scams where one would think how the heck could they fall for it? But it's not like many fall for it, it is relatively many from the huge total they address with their emails and tweets and whatever. If they send out a tweet or email to 10,000 people, and 0.1% fall for it, that's 10 people. Depending on whatever they are asking for, that could already pay off big time for scammers.

Someone did a medium posting a while ago, that I can't find at the moment, showing how a lot of the BTC going into these scams actually belongs to the scammers.
They post addresses, send money to them, send the money back out and then wait for everyone else to send more.

Don't know how accurate what they posted was, but they did show a bunch of BTC that could be traced in a loop from one address to the next and back again.

Yup there are still lots of newbies and beginners out there who are not aware of the scams around the corner. They're just prone to "shiny opportunity syndrome" where if they see any of them with big amounts and high returns, they are not hesitating to jump in without question. That's the price we pay for education. We pay it either through experience of through knowledge. I also had that nasty experience while starting up as a noob in this industry. Also, judging from victim of other scams, these people are often desperate. I've recently watched a video about a popular Ponzi scheme in my country and people who invest in it. These people are usually pretty old (so they aren't very familiar with how the Internet works), giving away their pensions to the scammers in the hope of hoping their families. There are also people who are ill and need a lot of money for medical operations, and they are desperate to try anything that might help them get this money. It's very sad that the already vulnerable ones are losing what they have due to scams. And speaking of crypto scams specifically, it surely doesn't help to get confusion out of the way when there are mixed messages from various authorities and financial experts, as many say Bitcoin itself is a scam, a financial pyramid and whatnot.

Yes, it seems that used to often use email to do this, maybe now still do. but  just like you, I just experienced it on telegram by wanting to help solve the problem of what is my right by providing a link to connect with my metamask. without me realizing it I believed by not looking at the telegram address first whether they were administrators.
finally all when they got the direct link, it didn't take long for all the coins to change hands.

but this is an experience that will leave an impression on us, we don't always believe in anything that seems to want to help because behind that help something will happen that we don't want, let this experience make me more careful too.

It is easy to determine whether certain event or project is a scam nowadays. Usually, they offer promises that are too good to be true. Nevertheless, we should not still be too complacent about the stupidity of the scammers. There are still some who can manipulate you and deceive you up until they are able to steal your money. Regardless of how shallow and how scams can easily be known, the best way to avoid sudden loss of huge amount of money is through not trusting anyone right away. I am not surprised at all. There are too many people around the world, they have various educational backgrounds and may have a different understanding of scams. As far as I know some of the giveaways conduct KYC or want some type of data from you so the price you actually pay for the coins is to give away the most valuable you have: your data. There are many greedy people out there, who don't care to confirm any information they received, but just agreed to anything they see online. We have to be very careful about what we believe online, because there are many scammers, who create fake sites. What's even more shocking is when people lose complete sense just because some so-called "celebrity" tweets a similar scheme, only to find out later that their account was actually hacked. A lot of these scams are appearing and even uses any big exchanges as their marketing strategy. I saw this Telegram group having Thousands and their members are having conversations about sending their BTC and thanking the team for sending back their BTC added by 10% as an airdrop. It was very sketchy though as their conversation flow was always the same. I just hope newbies here do not make a mistake by sending BTC to any malicious address. Don't be greedy guys.

Can you believe that the guy who hacked the Twitter account of Elon Musk was just 17-years old (Graham Ivan Clark)? It's a crazy world where we are living. Kids nowadays are really getting in to coding and all that stuff at a very early age and they are able to hack giant social media platforms. But it is sad to see at least some of them using their skills for the wrong purpose.
