Hi Bitcointalk community,

I was planning to run 8X RTX 3070 on my mining rig with the Asus Prime Z390-A Motherboard.
I already have a mining rig with that motherboard running 8X GTX 1660 Super but only with one EVGA PSU 1000W.

To run 8X RTX 3070 I bought an EVGA PSU 1300W which is enough for the power but the problem I was not expecting is that most of the RTX 3070 have 2X 8-pin or 8-pin + 6-pin power connectors so I don't have enough PCI-e cables from my EVGA PSU 1300W. I need another PSU.

I am planning to buy an EVGA PSU 850W with a 24 Pin Male to Female Dual PSU Power Supply Cable like this:
https://www.amazon.ca/Female-Power-Supply-Motherboard-Adapter/dp/B013HTWI9G/ref=asc_df_B013HTWI9G/?tag=googleshopc0c-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=459480626555&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=9215816340627094877&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9000455&hvtargid=pla-351408993297&psc=1

I guess I should always connect a riser and a gpu to the same PSU but other than that is it safe to use 2 PSU on a mining rig?

Is there something to do in the BIOS?

Any suggestions for which 24 Pin Male to Female Dual PSU Power Supply Cable to buy?

Thank you guys!

I use this kind of dual PSU cable and it works great.
As you said, never mix the PSU (One PSU for the mobo, And GPU + riser on same PSU) and I will be ok

PS : Avoid problems and do use SATA adapter for the risers, they are potentially too weaks (~54W per plug)

I've been mining with 2 PSUs since 2014 and never ran into any issues and I never used the Dual2PSU module.

Here are a few things to remember.

You cannot mix any of the voltages together. So if you got a GPU with 2x 8 pin connections. You CANNOT plug those into seperate PSUs, it needs to be plugged into the same PSU. You can plug in the riser +12V to the other PSU because there is no direct connection from the +12V pins to the PCIe power connectors.

The PSUs need to be grounded together somehow. So just connect 2 GND's together between the PSUs.

The secondary PSU, to prevent damage if there is some sudden shutdown of the main PSU, you don't want it running without a load. So plug in a fan or two to make sure it always has a constant load.

To get the secondary PSU to start up, you just need to short 2 pins on the motherboards 24 pin connector.

People have been doing this since 2011-12 if I recall because back then GPUs used more power and they didn't sell PSUs as large as 1600W back in the day. Hence you had no reason but to use multiple PSUs at the same time.

I would go for a mining psu with 16 x PCI-E 8PIN.

Another option is custom cables.
Did this for my 3080 Suprim X rig.

I always used a server PSU and breakout board then used 6pin to 8pin EPS cable with a pigtail for powering a PICO psu for the mobo. Never ran into any problems.

Can you elaborate why?

Yes I never used SATA adapters to power the risers.

Okay after some research, to run safely 2 PSU for my mining rig I will instead buy a ADD2PSU so the slave power supply will turn on or off when the master power supply will turn on or off. A ADD2PSU like this one:

https://www.amazon.ca/Multiple-Adapter-Connector-Genetek-Electric/dp/B0711WX9MC/ref=sr_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=ADD2PSU&qid=1627160431&sr=8-5&th=1

If I understand correctly you plug a 4-pin molex connector from the master power supply into the ADD2PSU and then take the 24 Pin ATX connector from the slave power supply and connect it into the ADD2PSU. So this is how both PSU communicate and it avoids to accidentally having the master power supply shut down and the slave power supply continuing to run causing electrical issues.

You don't need to configure anything in the BIOS.
Be sure to connect the motherboard and hard drive from the main power supply. Connect only video cards and a raiser for them from the second power supply unit.
No need to connect the video card from the first power supply and the raiser from the second

Thank you FP91G this is what I will buy a Add2PSU adapter but they don't have the black foam on the back like for the GPU risers so I will buy this foam tape:

You don't really need the Add2PSU adapter. Its your choice but I ran rigs for years without it. You just need to turn them on at the same time while booting. And in the rare case that the main PSU shuts down and you don't want the secondary running without a load, just plug a fan or two into the PSU, or even a SSD which would use more of the voltages such as 3.3V,5V,12V.

Like the above poster said, just keep them supplies seperated in whatever you connect. If you want to be safe, just power an entire GPU from one PSU completely and don't mix any voltages and you shouldn't have issues. If you mix voltages you will get a current feedback loop and basically one of the PSUs will get fried (or both).
