If you didn't trespass and you were innocent of the crime the dog probably suspected you committed, then it's OK to act on self defense especially if you can safely defend yourself.
If you don't want to make mistakes then use a form of defense that's effective but doesn’t cause injury or death. You never can tell, the dog may be doing that to secure its community or for your sake. Imagine if the dog was a human security officer who is simply doing the job a community assigned him/her to do.

To be fair with the "security officer", I was effectively running toward his base, however to his bad, he was to roaming far away, and when he saw me arriving, he retreated toward his home, but once he attained it, and I was getting closer, he sprinted toward me, barking !
Now, follow me, I froze, as advertised, aka I stood still, and let the "security officer" do what they do, aka he didn't even came to sniff me, but went back to his station.
However it was ON THE PUBLIC STREET and I was ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE SIDE WALK... meaning he crossed the road (where there was still no cars), but, IMHO it's very bad behavior.
Furthermore, in a shit hit the fan / insurection setup, no choice but to kill on sight, I mean, it's such a good trap. Have a dog, send it toward "walkers" and then shot them when they sympathize with the bait.
But why do cats, or wolves don't do such uncivilized behaviors. Cats remain on their turf, and if they chose to defend their positions, you will understand it pretty fast, and they never come to check.
That's the point, on which God Given right, this dog, pretend to have the right to security check me on the other side of public road? that's the thing, he has to learn and understand the HIERARCHY. I AM HUMAN.

Personally if the Wolf pack I was elected supreme leader had such a behavior, to come to unknown, I would consider it unsatifactory behavior, and if a fucking unknown came to them, feast, my little partners, since do they dare to threspass our safe space, but to come to die (if they are smaller/weaker or we don't have retreat).
Imagine if I was a bear? I see a fucking dog running toward me? bitch slap to heaven, if I ain't hungry... that's revert to my first point : bad education > bad behavior.
