So I bought this t17 off ebay. Out of the box is was only hashing on 2 of the boards. Now its hashing on just board. I did get a 33% refund from the seller from the 1st board not working. I've posted the log below just looking for a place start.

There you go.

2021-08-09 21:54:45 driver-btm-api.c:1009:check_asic_number_with_power_on: Chain[2]: find 24 asic, times 0

The T17 chips are connected in series if all 30 Asics are not connected the board won't hash, your chain 1 shows 0 Asics which means either the first chip is bad or it has some other issues, chain 2 shows 24 Asics which means the signal is interrupted at chip number 25.

It's very, very, very common for T17 to lose chips this way, the solder bitmain used is of terrible quality, the reported failure rate for these gears was well over 30% in the first a few months, it has now been 2 years and without a doubt, the failure rate has gone up by quite a bit.

The bad news is that these are not easy to fix, you are going to need some tools to confirm which chips need replacement, and then you are going to need to buy the chips from China, and replacing them isn't something everyone can do, if you don't have the tools and skills needed, you will have to send it somewhere to fix it, where are you located?

Thank you so much for your reply!!!

I live in Ohio. I have some experience soldering.

I've done some console mods like replacing the screen on my gamegear and installing the HDMI mod on my N64 but I have nothing to diagnose these with nor am I really 100% comfortable doing it. Maybe after i've recaptured a bit more of my money i'd try it....

I have opened it up and it looks like one of these cards has been repaired before as there is some unshielded copper wire that looks to be jumping something or something lol.... I'm also pretty sure this is the board that is still working. I did wait a bit to open it up after shutting it down but this card was clearly warmer then the others.

All the heat sinks seem to be attached pretty well and one of the cards that I believe is one of the defective ones looks like its had all its heat sinks reattached on one side.

Is it safe to take the 2 defective cards out and run it with just the 1 while I figure out what I'm doing?

Thanks again!

I'd like to suggest you try to test them one by one and maybe the PSU can't provide enough power that is why the one dashboard show 0 ASIC and check the cables swap the cable from chain
  • to chain [1] (Both power and ribbon cable)let see if there are changes on the logs. If the chain
  • shows 0 ASIC and the chain [1] now shows ASIC then there is a possibility that your ribbon cable is defective. So the solution is to replace them.
If no changes on the logs another reason is the loose heatsink if you can disassemble the unit you can check the middle hashboard and maybe there are some loose heatsink.

Is it safe to take the 2 defective cards out and run it with just the 1 while I figure out what I'm doing?

Yes, you can run them with only one hashboard.

You need a bit more than just that, this is a brief explanation of the things you are going to be doing > https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5WH7g61d90w&t=89s.

It's what's under the heatsinks that matters, the solder that keeps the chip in place goes bad or the chip itself is burned, try to identify chip 25 on your chain 2 and see if you can see any physical damage like solder balls between the chip legs, refer to the image below

Ok so I did run each of these individually. I did confirm that card that was warm before was the working one. When I ran the 3rd card it worked. I think this is the card that showed the 25 chip was not working.

I did apply the slightest bit of pressure on all the heatsinks before I put them back. What should I do?

I think it is worth disclosing I bought 2 of these and they are each running on their on 30 amp breaker with their own tripplite PDU. The first one is working fine. So I don't think there is anything wrong with my setup.

1st Card (worked as expected)
