What I think when people are saying about gem coins, it means that they're the good altcoins that they invest with and they think that those gem coins are the best in their eye sights.

That website is your go to for finding those cryptos that are legit to invest in. Look at the first page and the top altcoins because the next pages, especially at the last pages or more than the 3rd or so, many of those projects are not good and mostly scams are also listed on that tracker.

Altcoin means alternate coin for bitcoin and anyother coin other than bitcoin can be called as a alternate coin. it has different ecosystem than bitcoin and it was acting as an alternative chain for the bitcoin as well.
Hidden gem means the altcoin that can give you very big ROI instantly just like you are investing 1k in potential altcoin aka hidden gem and then after a year and you will get 1 million USD as return from your investment from such altcoin. that's why it called hidden gem

From the name, you can actually tell what altcoins are, and why they are called altcoins is that they were created as an alternative to the main coin, namely BTC, each altcoin has its own ecosystem and roadmap.
Maybe you mean hidden gems is when you invest in a coin, then you get a big profit from that investment. Then how to get it is from your understanding of a coin that you are going to invest in, you have to really understand the road map, market capitalists and the ecosystem in it, for beginners it is better to invest in coins that are popular and have big capitalists in the crypto market such as ETH and BNB .

It's really hard to find "gem coins" as you say now. High risk that you'll lost most of the money you invest because 1000x pumps can happen only with some new and cheap coin but it's most likely a scam or just a shitcoin. If you're new i would recommend you to invest in well-known crypto's like BTC, ETH, LTC.

Gem coins are altcoins as well, what they mean by gems coins is that it is somewhat hidden and no hype but the price usually is being pump hard, or at least it has steady climb in the market. It's hard to find that one because it's really hard to spot, there are couple of bench marks though, like the people behind the projects, the uniqueness or what it can offer to the crypto space, number of total tokens in circulation, the less the better as the price could really go high base on supply and the demand.

Personally I don't see much value in altcoins and tokens. I just don't see the reason for so many networks with pretty comparable specs. It is a free market of course and everybody can create their own vision, but why do we need to have so many stablecoins for example on so many different networks? - Perhaps it is because no network so far can be considered stable and reliable and there still are pressures to perfect the value proposition of cryptocurrencies. That's one way to look at it.

Altcoins are all crypto-coins and tokens that are not bitcoin. So every cryptoproject that is not bitcoins is considered an altcoin. That definition exists since years and will probably stay for a long time or even forever even though i think it is not suitable anymore as more money is in altcoins now than in bitcoin.
There is no definition for Gem coins or hidden gems because that is a very subjective rating that everyone makes for himself. So if you read on this forum about the "next hidden gem coin that will definitely make x100" then you should be very careful because it is most likely just a shilling post from someone that wants to dump his coins on you.

All gem coins are altcoins but not all altcoins are gem coins. That is, there are a lot of altcoins currently in the market and in this lots, only few are worthy to invest and good for long term, these types are gem coins while those that are just pump and dump or the hype coins with no good value are still altcoins but you can't classify them as gem coins.
In other words, all coins and tokens from Ethereum till the least even to the ones launching today are called altcoins, while gem coins are coins which have the potential to give the investor or holder a reasonable profit on the long run while still maintaining its value, its use case, products and services speaks for it, thus adding more value to it as it grows.
Lastly, all gem coins didn't became a gem in one day, it took time and constant developments from the team to grow, hence the Importance of use case.
