When I ignore a user and someone else quotes him, shouldn't I get that post ignored too? What's the purpose of ignoring a user if you don't get rid of him completely? I usually choose to ignore users so that I prevent from stumbling across their discussions again. Otherwise, I find it pretty meaningless.

Nope, ignoring a user does not lead to ignoring the posts where he is quoted, nor the quoted part on its own; at least not with the forum software (I don’t know if any of the custom extensions manage to do it).

That sometimes leads me to unignore the ignored poster, at least for a while, since when reading the thread, a quoted part may require the whole post for context.

Someone who quotes your ignored user might have an otherwise useful post. It would be nice to have the quote of the ignored user to be collapsed (and while we're at it, collapse/reduce wall-quotes and large images too) but hiding the whole post would be too harsh IMO.

Nope, you can not.

Ignore feature works the same for deleted posts or display name change (?). You will see full content of posts or deleted posts of ignored users. I remember I checked, it is correct that even a user changed display name (by admin), in quoted posts, the previous/orginal display name will still be shown.

In addition, if you click on post history of Ignored user, you will still see all post content. I don't know how it is designed on the forum.

I guess it is similar to the hidden feature. Click on post history, and post with image from newbies, then you will see images. By default, images are disabled if they are posted by newbies, but if you check that post in post history, images will be displayed.  Grin

If what you said would happen, then some users may probably see nothing on this forum except "You have ignored this user and he was quoted, so this post is ignored too" because we know about some Legends who have ignored enough number of users that sometimes they will see the whole page having comments from ignored ones which will instead be more irritating. When the feature was meant to block the messages of ignored users from being seen, how can it be applied to the users who quoted their messages? A quote means a user has taken that message and replied to it or used it as a reference, so even if you ignored the person whose message was quoted, you will see their quoted message.

A similiar thread (I would say it's basically the same content) has been discussed quite recently here[1] - the best solution (or at least the solution closest to what you aim) came from morvillz7z:
Quote
I've been using guitarplinker's userscript for quite some time now:

OP, I put together a simple Tampermonkey script to hide all the user fields of ignored users. Here's a Pastebin link: http://pastebin.com/raw/YCZX3uEe

Here's an image showing what hidden posts look like after installing the script:

Is that kind of what you were interested in having the script do, or did I miss something?

edit;

DYI, smart ! Almost, without "any trace" like the ignore list user didn't even post ! Because here there is still a line, creating temptation, to unmask. Is it safe? Thanks a lot for the suggestion, never better served than by oneself ! I would love to understand how this script works and how to install it, specially on a Whonix/Tail setup, and if it affects safety in any way? Maybe the owners of the forum should hire you Smiley.

In reality the problem is me, just weak... if I put on ignore, never unmasked ever again. strong.

code is public and you should use it at your own discretion

here's a compilation of other userscripts available: List of Bitcointalk.org Userscripts/ Add-ons

So short answer would be : No, you can't do that natively on the forum. You can, however, run a usercsript that allows you to achieve a result similiar for what you seek.

This is why the forum needs a block option.  Ignoring doesn't stop trolls from getting paid via their signature campaigns to troll users and derail their threads/efforts to be a productive member of the community.  So much talent has been chased away from this forum that could have likely been saved to stick around and innovate here as opposed to joining other communities and dumping their efforts into an ever growing altcoin market (that is now larger than Bitcoin).  At some point we should probably make an effort to retain talent around here, although I guess you don't need talent for a store of value, so that's a possible explanation.  It's really sad that this is even an issue.  I guess this is what happens when your lead developers think that a toxic attitude is good for a project and the best way to use Bitcoin is to not use it.

Interesting question. I did search up "ignoring user in quotes" on Google and some replies do have valid points as to why it's not possible to natively include quotes of the ignored user(s). For instance:

Quote from: obfuscator
It's not possible because a quote isn't considered a separate entity, really...if that makes sense. Clicking the quote button just generates the tags and puts the last post inside them - the forum doesn't necessarily "know" that someone has been quoted and once the post is there viewing the topic will just display it as is - it's not re-parsed for stuff like quotes after the initial posting.

Source: https://forum.tip.it/topic/299642-ignored-user-quotes/

So in a way, the quote tags do not include the entity of the user, rather just the text itself. Because if the ignore function were to include that, imagine how messy things would be especially for those those mentioning the name(s) and it might probably affect the whole quote thing itself.

It happens on other forum software too and I believe it involves more than just simply tweaking the code. Hence why external scripts exist.

But it's sure that a forum member who ignored another user will see the user post or comment when it has been quotes to other person's? Or both the  user ignored and post or thread will not be visible to the person that ignored it, i want to understand this concept very well and digest it like food, because in handset any user you blacklist the contact if the person try to come in contact with you, it will be an evidence indicating that this user is trying to reach you,

Actually i taught that if someone is been ignored, it will not be visible to any thread created by user as per say.

OP, a similar topic to this seemed to have been on a few days before you opened this, Here is link to the thread https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5353140.0 so I'm thinking if it's not duplicative having both running at the same time.

However, making recourse to the topic I would love to have a situation where I don't ever get notifications from  replied comments I make by users I have under my ignore list.

Actually i taught that if someone is been ignored, it will not be visible to any thread created by user as per say.
Did you read any of the replies here?  The question OP asked has been answered the same way numerous times--and I won't repeat the answer, but if you read all the posts above yours, your own question should be answered.

i want to understand this concept very well and digest it like food
Just don't put any large objects in your mouth, as they could potentially be choking hazards.

I wouldn't want a quoted reply of an ignored member to be ignored itself, but that's my own personal choice.  I can see how for certain members you'd never want to see anything they've written, but that's how it works on bitcointalk.  Oh, but it would be soooo nice if, when you ignore a member, you wouldn't even be able to see that they'd posted something in a thread (unless it was quoted).  There was a thread about that this week, but I know that's never going to be a feature here.  Ah, well.
