A recent online data leak revealing 17 GB worth of Vietnamese identity card information has allegedly been connected to digital currency platform Pi Network.

Any thoughts about this issue? is this possible  to happen that by simple application can get lots of private information and data stored in our device? I just want some insight about this to those who have lots of knowledge when it comes to crypto currency and developer there.
I'm from the Philippines and the Pi network application is now trending in our country everyone used it install it and reffering other people with this app to mine a Pi coin this Pi network launched 2  years ago year 2019 if I'm not mistaken and now it going trend again. Just uninstall the app and forget about it. They've been collecting data for so long and yet never delivered something for their downloaders or they call 'mobile miners'. There's no such as easy money and we're from the same country.
It's been a trend because many were not able to purchase for an NFT game that we all know and some sharers have this on different groups and telling that there's nothing that's going to be gone if you ever tried it. You better don't try it as there's no such as easy money.
This thread also belongs to the altcoin discussions.

Any thoughts about this issue?

This is something expected to happen. Pi tells it offers money for nothing (you were not mining, you know that, right?) and people keep installing their software. And at some point you start to need do this and that in order to maybe access that money. Where you expect them to have that money from? I'd start with selling KYC info, and not to the highest bidder, to all of them.

People (me included) kept telling to stay away from Pi. You didn't? Too bad.

I tried telling everyone how fishy the Pi network is, apparently, the article was a few months ago, again, I've heard of Pi network a few years ago, up until now, it still has no value and is not even in the market, also, a lot of citizens have been convinced on using the Pi Network's mining app, and it is really trending around the Philippines regardless of their data getting leaked, I've heard some people that Pi does sell their data in order to gain profit, I don't have that much knowledge on how they earn profit from selling data but the whole Pi Network looks really fishy, and this "Pi trend" in the Philippines cannot be helped, if you know better, just uninstall the application and tell your friends that their data with the Pi network can be easily breached.

source. https://www.google.com/amp/s/ampe.vnexpress.net/news/news/personal-data-leak-affects-thousands-of-vietnamese-4279503.html

I just want to know if this is totally a scam platform to get private data of a person and if they totally use crypto currency in this kind of illegal activity.

Pi is indeed becoming trending nowadays. I'm also from the Philippines and I've seen so many posts regarding pi network application. Pi network has garnered millions of users now because of referral method. The estimated mainnet is on the last quarter of this year, to be specific on December 2021. They have their own facebook group about pi mining and referrals.

This application requires KYC. A valid ID and certain verification is required in order to make an account. Email verification and phone verification are of important to mine pi. I must say this is very risky because your identity and private information are at stake. You are not even assured if the security of pi network is strong enough to prevent hacking that could lead to identity leak and theft later on. In this case, you mentioned that a leakage recently happen and the information leaked were mostly associated with pi network. With this, you will find the authenticity of pi very doubtful.

Pi network has no open source code. It isn't launched in blockchain which is sketchy because most crypto is built on it. The only thing that the pi miners are trusting is the college degree of the founders of pi network because the founders are graduates of Stanford University and they have PhD. IMO, while degree is a good factor to background check, it isn't an assurance that the project they have made isn't a scam.

The real mining needs mining rig and mining softwares. While it is possible to mine using mobile phones, it isn't effective that much compared to mining using mining rigs. In pi, they "mine" by simply logging in and tapping the app a day. It's so easy that you can mine 3 pi a day.

Now, my point is this. If this pi network is legit like most people claim it to be. Where will the founders get the fund allocation for every mined pi by its mainnet launched? As of now, pi has already 23 million users. If each user has the average of 300 pi each and its market value is predicted to be priced at $100, the total value would be $600,900,000,000 all in all. How many investors will be needed in order to fulfill that amount? Will there ever be an investor considering that this cryptocurrency worth is nothing at the present?

If you'll compare the market cap of the top cryptocurrency coins, the predicted market cap of pi is insane - too good to be true. You can mine as much as you want, refer people and be rewarded with incentive worth $100 a pi? Sounds a scam to me.

I thought this one is already forgotten and gone for good. But still, they are making news up until now. High likely that they may have sold the collected info to the highest bidder. Or they will say someone hacked their system?

Nope this is spreading more these days as many people keep sharing it on social medias, many people hoping that they can earn with it by just inviting and what they believe in mining. But honestly after those issues came out its really better to uninstall this app since there's no way we can earn with it and this project still didn't get any progress for so many years of existence and seems there main intention is only to steal our data's.

The thing is, there's no free money. It's either you do some work or invest to earn some.
I have heard enough about this Pi Network and I'm from PH too. Even my colleagues was asking about it since I they knew I am into Cryptocurrency, but I kept telling them that It is not directly related to cryptocurrency and It is running with it's own network. Just another digital currency who's trying to become the next Bitcoin.

I think this should be enough evidence for these people to stop downloading the App.

we have to know that anything about free is high risk, maybe this is not what they do but bad guys will take advantage of this weak platform to infiltrate our information, if We spend money to buy big and quality projects, they have security features, so the risk of free is always there.

It's been two years since this has been a thing, Pi network is nothing but just an elaborate way to harvest data from it's user so they can sell them to companies in which those companies will bombard you with ads. Plus, you really don't want your info to leak out right especially what you're doing on your phone, privacy is a commodity now and a lot of people are paying to have yours.

Just leave it, I already leaving it too when they are asking to do some KYC. It just suspicious even though in the first place i was also promoting it, I mean they are active community and developer but i never expect it turn out to be some scam, First they asking some KYC and another suspicious things you can see some ads on their Apps which making it really fishy, Beside that so far i know there is no Explorer and mining on the mobile was already scripted in the first place so it's just another Scammy project, Just Uninstall it!

This news is old. Below is a quote from an article refuting the claim of Pi Network being the source of the leak:

Quote
Phien Vo, the moderator of a group discussing the Pi Network, said that it is not possible for Pi Network to leak the data since KYC processing was done by a third-party verification site called Yoti. The moderator explained that while Yoti accepts identity cards from around 62 countries and territories, Vietnam is not included in the list.

From: https://tokenpost.com/Personal-data-leak-affecting-10K-Vietnamese-might-be-linked-to-a-mobile-crypto-mining-app-8483

I don't know if this is really true but it's better if we just stay away from Pi Network. They've been gathering so much data but haven't really done anything to make the users use it. They've been promising for years but nothing really came up. There's bound to happen with all the data they've been mining all this time.

I also once downloaded the Pi and used it for over a year, they asked for KYC and after that we would be able to make withdrawals. I was very suspicious of this, therefore I did not continue, and after I read this news it turned out that my suspicions were true.

I think that Pi Network is a total waste of time, seriously. It has been years now and they still have not delivered anything at all, and just kept mining and wishing for something that might not even come true. It is quite possible that they are stealing data from people because for you to make use of their platform you will have to link your data (phone number or social media account), and then you start mining without gaining anything.

It just seems to me like a total waste of time and it was created to trick those who think they missed Bitcoin and are looking for free money, they are just going to keep these running round in circle and achieving. It’s best you look for something to do and earn, than wasting time on this.

the application is quite old and there is no bright spot, lastly I got a notification to do KYC with the reason that after the new network can be directly connected and if not KYC will be deleted from the system, in the area I live many people just know about the pi network problem, so they compete look for references rather become their partners in the network,
Honestly, I still have the application on my cellphone, after reading this thread I immediately deleted the pi network application,

That's the misleading part for apps like these. They tend to educate people that it's easy to earn as that with cryptocurrencies but the whole project doesn't even give the profit that those users deserve or are at least eligible at. There's malicious content that the app is getting for those downloads and that's what most of the people that downloaded it don't know about it. Well, good for you that you have finally uninstalled the app because it's going to continue exploiting you guys if you don't ever notice it.
