You're approximately 18 years old, having a choice to make, which might (or might not) affect your future for years to come, choosing what and if you want to study. How do you make such a choice? How do you choose what you want to do for the rest of your life (Maybe, maybe not?).

When I was 18 years old, I never really bothered on what I've wanted to do, alongside with a pretty messed up psychology, I wasn't in the best position to choose. I chose Business Administration, which I'm graduating from in a month or two at most, without being sure I wanted that. Now that I'm graduated, I'm not exactly sure if it was the right choice and/or if it's actually appealing to me, as something I'd be willing to do as an occupation for the upcoming years.

You're merely nothing but a student finishing High School, who is basically clueless on what he/she could possibly like, because it's something that might remain unknown for many years, even after finishing university. Seeing that from myself, I've got no clue on what I could possibly do in the future, based on what I studied. Follow a master's degree? Not sure on what subject, try something else? I'm not sure about that either.

I'm pretty intrigued to become a first responder paramedic, but I still haven't made up my mind. Did you go through this process yourselves? How did you deal with it, how is someone supposed to find what he likes at 18 years old, is that educational practice even appropriate?

I suppose it depends on why you want to study. If you want to learn more about a field you're interested in, then it's fairly straightforward and you just pick what you like. On the other hand, if you are picking a subject in order to secure a good job after graduating, there are other factors to consider. One of which is, with ever increasing automation, which fields will have jobs in the future? Simply looking at jobs that are available right now may not help you, when things are moving so quickly. Smart contract platforms like Ethereum may end up automating whole industries. AI and ML, similarly. Which jobs are least likely to disappear in the coming decades? And often as some jobs get automated away, new jobs arise in new sectors. Will that happen this time? What might be a growth sector? What sort of effect will changes such as the current WFH revolution have?

Yes we should have a dream then only we know what path we should travel or else most of our valuable time will be wasted. And now most of the teens know what they wanted to be especially after the internet bloom because they may have clear knowledge about the path they are going to choose.

But to become an entrepreneur there is no graduation is needed which is the ultimate way to live the rich life style.

I think to be successful in life, you must have a set of goal, ambition and focus on how your future will look like. You must have a foreshadow of your future from now and work towards being that person you want to be from now.
You must have a role model that you want to be like, somebody that inspires you, somebody that motivates you through his or her success story.

I have a goal, and everything I do in school today is for me to meet that target.I have a mentor in school, that tells me the path to follow, someone I trust and believe. He has taught me to believe in my ability and to have no doubt about what I can achieve in life.Believing in your dreams and working towards it will lead you to where you want to be in life.

I will share how I ended up in engineering program.

When I was in High School, I love to cook any kind of dish depending on the ingredients presented, so I believed that I will be a great chef in the future.

Years later, I am really interested in science especially in things going around outside earth, so I presume that I will be taking astronomy instead of Culinary.

Senior High School, I am in love with agriculture and geology, and I despise engineering so much that I promise to myself that I won't ever pick any kind of engineering in my courses. But my relatives talks me about becoming a maritime student so I apply to the top 1 school in maritime in my country, but I'm color blind so they didn't let me, it is far so I go home but hours later, they call me that there's glasses that can correct color blindness. But I am already at home and too tired to even make my way to that school again.

After a year, a friend of mine influenced me to take Mechanical Engineering as we are looking for schools to apply to, so we apply to a known engineering school in my country in which I passed and my friend doesn't. So instead of applying to that school, we also apply to another school which offers the same program, and yet again my friend didn't passed.

And since I don't have time to pick another school, I take the Mechanical Engineering program in the school close to our home, and my friend have decided to be a maritime engineer.

In other words, I've not decided what I want to be, I let the moments flow and ended up where I am today.

Everyone has the right to dream and to fulfill this dream we have to set goals and move forward believe that your efforts are important. Those who have a growth mindset believe that effort and hard work can lead to meaningful growth learn something new When faced with a challenge, they look for ways to develop the knowledge and skills they need to acquire and conquer see failure as a learning experience. Growth minded people do not believe that failure is a reflection of efficiency instead they see it as a valuable source of experience from which they can learn and improve.

Most people like you at the 18 years are not serious in life and they just focus on what comes at their life. At this age, most people study at university or college and that too is determined by their parents. Usually people are not focused in this age and usually they waste the time in outings and entertainment.

I certainly wasn't in the right mind to choose what I'd want myself doing for what's supposed to be the rest of my life. A lot of factors played an important role back them, psychological mostly, but also that I hadn't explored myself enough to know what my interests are. I do know better now, but I still haven't decided yet, nor do I know where to look for such an answer.

Sometimes because of the opportunity factor, so that it makes us forget about what kind of life we want? Why do we do the work we are currently doing? There are billions of people walking on this earth aimlessly. Many of us seem so engrossed in our respective worlds, from working in a bank to freelance art, Everything seems fine, seems happy.
But when asked "What do you really want in life?" Most answered "Don't know!"
Even adults in their 40s and 50s, most of them don't know what they want to do for themselves. So for those of you who are 18 years old it is very reasonable. so it's better for now you start to learn from the experience of others, experiment with experience, and find out what you don't like

I fall into your category, the cause I studied in the university was just out of infatuation I got for it in secondary school days. I so dislike it to the extend that I have not use the certificate to achieve anything tending to that career. The best thing is to start studying your new passion career immediately and it should be driven by your dreams and visions.

I think that of all things an individual could want or choose to aspire to become, being happy is the best option. Whether that happiness comes from your career, family, hobbies, whatever… Just choose to be happy and enjoy the ride while you still have time on this spinning rock. You never know when you’ll hit that black screen on this game.

I'm doing a course I love and always loved, and to be honest, you are right, 18-19 year olds are given a choice that will really affect their whole life and they aren't mature enough to choose what's right for them, I guess the education system needs a radical change. When I was 18, thankfully I had the right guidance to choose something I love more than something which can give me much money and am really satisfied with it today Smiley along with my main aim, I have got many other smaller aims to fulfill as well Smiley

Many prosperous people or dignitaries planned their way out at early stages of life from the age range between fifteen to eighteen (15- 18) years, whatever someone wants to become starts with early to manifest, right now planning is first thing for development or success of a man, after been trial of three different kinds of things and one bonded well, you can decide for the thing you will go with your life. And After twenty eight years of age and someone have not make up his life decisions it will be very difficult to decide on what to do for Life.

Times are always changing, and our knowledge changes sometimes cannot keep up with this era. What's more, we cannot decide the fate of the future. As a young person, the most important thing is to choose a major that interests him. When faced with social work choices, I have the ability to undertake them.

If I could choose everything in life again, I would go straight to university with 18. Instead of working some time it is better to go straight into university, get a good degree and earn more money afterwards. Also I would choose computer science as my major. The more I could learn about blockchain and crypto currencies the earlier I could start to go into crypto trading. There some trading mistakes that I did in the past which I would like to avoid and safe that money.

What kind of course are you following, if you don't mind me asking? I'm thinking of choosing a few online courses from Edx.org, they have some interesting ones.

I'm not sure what I would do, provided that this was ever possible. I'm pretty certain that I wouldn't have chosen this sector or if I had, I'd spent more time thinking through it. Likewise, I wish I had sat my ass down and figured it out sooner. Now, I'm pretty clueless of what I'm going to do in the future.

most schools actually do a test which reveals what your interests are and what type of learner/worker you are to come to an idea of a career that will suit you, even if this idea is a pivot away from dreams

people learn differently some learn by reading. some by hearing. some by visualising
how they work. some do great at 'book work' writing essays. some are more creative and do better with physical tasks.

EG a highly intelligent book work person that enjoys science. becomes a researcher. diagnostician
EG a highly intelligent physical work person that enjoys science. becomes a doctor. lab technician

EG an average intelligent book work person that enjoys science. becomes a teacher. chemical rep
EG an average intelligent physical work person that enjoys science. becomes a paramedic. firework manufacturer

yes people can have a dream. but knowing your limits and your style and preference of learning/work can affect your chances and ability to achieve the dream. so having a bit of insight at school of they way you are and how you learn and work and your intellect level can and does help base choices that atleast come close to the dream even if you cant fully accomplish your dream due to your limitations

so ask yourself
are you a thinker(problem solver, learner) or a worker
do you like attention ans speaking or do you like to keep head down and just get on with work
do you like the rush/pressure to motivate you. or do you prefer the easy tasks

ask yourself questions about who you are and what makes you thrive/excel/happy. and then think of roles that match

I DO NOT TRADE OR ACT AS ESCROW ON THIS FORUM EVER.
Please do your own research & respect what is written here as both opinion & information gleaned from experience. many people replying with insults but no on-topic content substance, automatically are 'facepalmed' and yawned at
