Firstly, I apologise if this question has been asked before, but my search of search brings up a million results that are not related to the issue.

From what I understand, at a Newbie rank like me, my search time period - the time elapsed between searches - is limited to one search every 90 seconds. If this is wrong then please tell me, as I must be doing something wrong.

Anyway, assuming I'm correct, the 90 seconds between each search is a really long and very painful. Can this be reduced? Why is search limited this way, as it's just a search, not random rant posts.

I am keen to learn about this board, and research more on crypto, but it's being hampered by the 90 seconds search limit period. It's actually very frustrating. I've been settings a countdown timer on my phone every time I search so I know when I can search again, which to me seems quite ridiculous.

Can this limit be removed or at the very least reduced to a sensible time period.

Thanks.

As far as I know newly created account have longer delays as compared to higher rank members.

Or you could just use a simple google search instead.
Code:

You can do a google search and just include "site:bitcointalk.org" in whatever you're searching. Smiley
Example: "bitcoin site:bitcointalk.org"

You can also do a Google search right here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=search.

There was a similar thread long time ago that discussed the same thing in [here].

Thanks isaac_clarke22 and Maus0728 for replying. I did try the google search option - site:bitcointalk.org <keyword search> - but although it does search and I can do searching far quicker, it's older data - not from today for example. I tried a couple of searches of posts from today to test and they are not yet showing up as results on Google, so there must be a delay.

And I get that there are limits for newbies - and from what I've read the limit was imposed due to naughty people - but it makes it hard to interact and engage (and rank up) when my ability to search for interesting topics and threads is hampered by time limits so strict. I did find a post saying there used to be a 6 minute limit - like WOW, how was the board ever usable back then.

Anyway, thanks for replying. I'll try to bite my lip and ride it out.

Search engines don't check the website continuously, so they are indeed more suitable for older results. For example, in google, you can select the date/time range where to search for what you are interested in.

But I will show you something that, for simple search and new results may be better than google: https://ninjastic.space/search
You can fill a couple of criteria - keywords, date range, maybe author or board too - and will find even posts made minutes ago.

IIRC, searches counts as making posts and follows the same wait time for different ranks. The purpose of this is probably to prevent spamming and protect the software. Even with the wait time you can still make hundreds of searches per day, which is reasonably fair for every user.

If you wish to reduce the wait time, you could;
• Wait to rank up,
• Get whitelisted, by buying copper membership,
• Get whitelisted by a forum member who can manually do it.

<...>
I’ve seen this commented on threads such as You are searching too quickly. Reduce search 90 seconds limit?.

This has to do with your current Activity (not Rank), and the response time improves noticeably as this parameter increases. Below is the algorithm being used (second quote). Although it is often refered to in a posting context, it also applies to a search context.

<…>
Q: Why do I get the "The last posting from your IP was less than 360 seconds ago." error when I haven't posted today?
A: Logging in, sending PMs, searching via the forum's built in search engine and reporting posts to a moderator will also be counted as posting and extend this limit back to 360 seconds. Don't worry: as your activity increases, the 360 second limit will decrease as well. Here you can see the algorithm how the posting limit is calculated based on your activity: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=237597.msg4131557#msg4131557
<…>

In general terms, the waiting time improves as you gain activity:
<…>
Code:
waittime = 360;
if(activity >= 15)
        waittime = (int)(90 - activity);
if(activity >= 60)
        waittime=(int)(34.7586 - (0.0793103 * activity));
if(activity >= 100)
        waittime = max((int)(14-(activity/50)), 4);

I've seen mods/admins can whitelist an account to reduce posting limitations on a case by case basis. I’d presume search timeframe limitations would also be reduced as per the above.

Not sure if Copper Membership does the trick too. This would point to a possible 75% reduction in search time cool down periods (assuming it plays the same game as posting time reduction): Newbies can now pay a small fee to enable images – I can’t attest to it though.

Google/DDG isn't good enough if you use generic keyword or keyword which have multiple meaning. In my experience, Ninjastic Space search (https://ninjastic.space/search) produce far better search result if you know exact word, board, author or time-frame.

P.S. I wasn't paid by anyone to advertise this service.

read this ---> [Tips] Guide for forum search will improve the accuracy of your search and therefore you will get more accurate results in less time.

As DdmrDdmr explained, the search is based on your activity levels, but instead of waiting, you can buy copper's membership or give a compelling reason for some people to whitelist you.

for google try this

Code:
 if you want to search for hugeblack

hugeblack site:https://bitcointalk.org

Generally the forum is a torment if you're a newbie. You'll have to wait among your searches, your post submissions and your post's content (images). You have to understand how much some people abuse it, for admins to run it under these statutes.

P.S. I wasn't paid by anyone to advertise this service.
But, it's not a service. No one makes money out of it.

The forum search feature is pretty bad in my opinion. It only gives you 5 pages of results the last time I checked, and really old results are mixed in with more recent results. There should at least be a feature to sort the results by date and it shows only the <N> most recent or oldest results.

There is a feature to sort the results by date when using the forum search option;

On the message age section, you can choose the periods you wish to search for, for example
Between 10 and 15 days, means you'll be searching for results older than ten days ago, but less than 15 days ago. With this, you can search within any timeframe you wish to, by just calculating the days interval.

Currently the only way you can access that page is if you type nothing in the search bar (which is not user friendly) or if you bookmark and go to this obscure URL: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=search;

I understand how it can be possible to miss, but the search page is not that obscure and there are different links to finding it;
• At the top icons, between HELP and PROFILE is the icon with that link to the search box
• Also, very close to the search box is an icon, which looks like a hand lens, it also links to the search page

It is Search tab at the top on the right side.

If you open a topic, and click on Search box at the top on the left side, and type keyword to search; you will get results inside that topic only. This search feature was revealed by theymos.

note that if you use the search box in the upper right while in a topic, it searches only that topic.

Thanks for the pointer to the search options, and specifically to sort the search results, but I just tried it and it doesn't sort the results by "most recent topic first" even though I chose that sort order. My results displayed in a random order - 2018,2018,2013,2017,2011,2014. Makes searching for the most recent topic quite hard when it doesn't :-(

It does, but what you are really seeing under the column "Date posted" is the date when the thread was created, not the date when the listed item (concrete post under column "Subject") was actually created (/edited?). If you click on the inner most link within the "Subject" column, you’ll see that the list is actually ordered by post date (looking at the post itself), although the list is actually displaying the thread’s date (which is misleading).

Additionally, since only 5 pages are displayed, and these seem to show from the end of the date frame range regardless of the sort order, it’s important to delimit the message age to see entries around the dates you wish to observer (if applicable).

i.e. If you search for the term "forum" + order by most recent topic first, you’re still going to see a bunch of entries from 2011. Nevertheless, if you delimit the message age to 0..30 days, you’ll see the most recent entries.
