Walt Disney Co.’s ESPN is seeking to license its brand to major sports-betting companies for at least $3 billion over several years, according to people familiar with the matter, aiming to capitalize on the fast-growing online gambling industry.

The sports-media giant has held talks with players that own major sportsbooks, including casino operator Caesars Entertainment Inc. and online gambling company DraftKings Inc., the people said. ESPN has existing marketing partnerships with both companies.

A very positive news perse since ESPN, is now trying to explore more of their options in the betting section now how do you think this might affect the industry??

They are trying to enter the online gambling industry and I do believe that they might try and dominate the market which is already heavily competitive but it might give the users more choice perse.

What do you think Huh
I do believe they might get involved with the crypto casinos too soon enough!!
Something to watch out for.

ESPN has reportedly been losing subscribers and revenue. They need a to secure new sources of income if they're to stay relevant. It would seem they've chosen to tap the gambling industry as the logical source.

The gambling industry already has many unofficial spokesman to promote their business. (ex - all those mybookieAG promos Colby Covington and others in MMA cut) Youtubers, social media influencers and personalities with a large follower base may be a more effective method of reaching the public. Than large networks like ESPN.

ESPN's coverage of the Jake Paul vs Tyron Woodley fight last night was so terrible. I wouldn't mind if they never covered another boxing event.

What do you think Huh
I do believe they might get involved with the crypto casinos too soon enough!!
Something to watch out for.

Since it's ESPN, they already built a big name in the sports industry, and adding a gambling-related firm on their service, they might become a big competitor on fiat bookies competition.

But on the crypto side, I doubt they will be involved in it right away unless there's a mass call of request about it. Online gambling is currently in demand nowadays but on the side mostly of fiat online booking.

They are trying to enter the online gambling industry and I do believe that they might try and dominate the market which is already heavily competitive but it might give the users more choice perse.
Finally they are diversifying their resources and entering the gambling marketplace which is a trillion dollar market and since they are broadcasting majority of the sports they can be an instant success if they come out with a decent looking UI because of the reach they can get adverting their product globally during major sporting events and they can be a serious competitor for all the major sports book because of the financial backing they have.

What do you think Huh

I am not sure ESPN will jump into the cryptocurrency market space from the beginning but expect them to rule the fiat based gambling platforms and they do not need to shell out extra amount for broadcasting the matches live in their platform. It i a really interesting development and will see how they will perform.

I think they will look at crypto payment method here also but more than likely, they will focus on fiat payment first. As crypto payment is getting popular these days, it will not be surprise if they will add this on their options. But I believe, it depends on their arrangement with their license. Sometimes it would take time to include another payment like this one - crypto, as they need to get good grasp first on how things are being handled when it comes to crypto.

They will look at crypto but it will take time. Since we are in crypto everyday and always here in the forum, we think that accepting crypto by these giant companies will easily be considered. The Fiat gambling market is big so for now, we can't involve crypto here now so let's wait and focus first on the impact if ESPN will now enter the betting industry.

Low ratings? If that is then curious here why are others saying that Jake Paul vs Tyron Woodley's fight results in a good profit if only a few people support it. Cheesy ESPN or any other giants should not cover future boxing events of not a real boxer.

I think it's enough money for them to do something that can help them stay relevant in this modern world, this is actually the first time that I have heard of them as the center of the topic in this forum and it seems like things aren't going well for them, I don't wish anything good for them, they're a company and this is their undoing.

I don't think so. ESPN is into sports. Since it is basically a sports channel, if it gets into gambling, it could be expected to only get involved with sports betting. That is what the deal is all about. There is no mention of ESPN getting into a casino, much less a cryptocurrency casino. The casino business is not their forte.

Anyway, it is convenient for them to get into sports betting since they are already a huge name in sports entertainment for several decades.

I wouldn't be surprised if they did. I mean, cryptocurrency has been gaining popularity(and still is) on sports betting sites and gamblers using it to gamble have most likely have increased. It would be a logical move for them to incorporate cryptocurrency on their sport betting platform or online casino platform.

They are going to pull problems if they will try to scratch the surface of cryptocurrencies. Legality.
Disney shares went up because of this news and that says a lot.

It was September 2020 when DraftKings and ESPN had an agreement as a link out for gambling, that's why we keep on seeing advertisements of the said gambling site a lot of times.
DraftKings and ESPN Enter into Co-Exclusive Content Integration Agreement
I think they witness the increase in profits and now they want in. Are they really out of options for new things or is it greed?

If someone took online poker to the moon, it was ESPN, it is good to note however that; If there was a growth in users due to the nature of the Internet and online poker had penetration, but when at the beginning of the century and specifically in 2003 the remembered WSOP main event was broadcast, it was the explosion, but even in the 20th century they were already making broadcasts of the WSOP.

So ESPN is not asking for help, ransom or anything is being sold as a business opportunity for Sportsbooks, it is simply "demanding" that they buy its branded rights from it.

Also for what is allowed to be read or understood in the note and how I understand it requires that your name appear as part of the name of the sportsbook, something like that, I suppose and keeping the metaphorical distances with the sports stadiums and the names of certain brands.

But as a culmination of the above, they "demand" that they invest in advertising as part of the negotiation.
That they are quite dumb there on ESPN.

As for the crypto world, I would dare to say that except two or three casinos could try to enter a type of negotiation like this.

In addition, the betting industry knows that anyone who enters the "bargain" first benefits the entire sports betting niche.

The positive is they can help the crypto casinos grow fast because as a large industry, they will give more options in the betting section and the industry itself will flood with huge money. All people or companies will join their step and give color to the gambling industry or sports industry.

The negative is that they can use all of the ways to compete with their competitor and conquer the market with all of their power. But out of that, maybe we should give time for them and see what they will do so we can act based on the situation.

Sounds like a twisting statement. Can you explain how it becomes negative when ESPN will use everything to be on top? Isn't it what a gambling site really does to make their site big and competitive to others? Huh

You are contradicting your first statement that by integrating crypto into their supposed betting platform, it will boost the betting market in crypto gambling. If they won't use all ways to compete then how can they become big and able to contribute to the crypto gambling market?

I don't know about crypto casinos getting involved with this deal given that ESPN is based on the US, they might focus on fiat casinos that accepts US players like the ones mentioned in the article.

As much as possible I don't want to get my hopes up because like what Hydrogen mentioned ESPN is slowly falling off and with that in mind those casinos might get a better deal with other brands.

It's a betting deal, there will be a betting site that will be a side project for this deal. But they may not yet announce that. There is money to make in sports betting.
The gambling industry is already big and with the rise of online transactions and wallets readily available for everyone to download I think ESPN will have a betting channel to be accessed only for the adults which people can bet.

It is no secret that a company can use all ways to compete and beat their competitor, including using bad ways to get on the top leader in the market. Maybe you think it is twisting but not if you try to use yourself at their position. You will want to be the king at the market and to do that, you need to compete with all of the company. We never think and never know what ESPN will do to be on top as we do not part with them.

The first statement is the positive thing that the crypto can get from ESPN as we know that ESPN is a big company. At the same time, the second statement is the negative thing that they can use to be at the top of the market. We can easily remove the negative by assuming they will use a good way to compete and beat their competitor but as I said before, we do not know what ways that they will use later.

Their success in broadcasting the Super Bowl Roller Bowl Poker Central last year seemed to be one of the reasons for espn to cooperate with a gambling site and in my opinion even this will be equally beneficial for both parties, both the gambling site and espn, with this collaboration it is certainly possible to legalize online gambling can be realized in several states, I think in this case espn will be able to have a positive impact on online gambling, especially online gambling that uses crypto.

They've got no problem with the branding and they're already established. As they're known in the sports area, those bettors would ship them in as soon as they've launched their own sports betting platform. That gives them the upper hand but will they cope up with those loyal bookie players that have been experiencing good with the current sportsbook that we're staying with? There will be a lot of adjustments, they have the advantage but they still need to be at par with those established bookies already. I think they'll focus only on fiat and try to extract the customers of the other fiat-focused bookies.

ESPN is just looking for additional ways of revenue and to monetize their existing subscriber base. Since they are exclusively a sports channel, what else could be the best way to monetize their huge subscriber base!! I would say it's a clever step to safeguard their business and their shrinking footsteps in the sports market.

I don't think they will enter into betting arena by themselves anytime soon. But who knows! Business landscape is ever changing and a company needs to evolve to survive.

Very possible, especially betting using cryptocurrency, these huge companies will start for sure using cryptocurrency but they may find difficulty on regulation, especially using cryptocurrency on gambling. But overall, it's good for them and in cryptocurrency too.
Once this huge money comes in, others will follow. With the popularity of cryptocurrency increasing, gambling industries will start to try cryptocurrency soon.
