My answer is knowledge. But merit will be earned as by product.

Merit was created for those who will share their knowledge, so if you have the knowledge and you are contributing to make this forum informative you will receive merits, although there are people who bought merits from those selling their merits because merits will help you rank up.

Both.

You can be knowledgeable in other things and earn merit too with how you talk with others. But it's all your preference and in which field do you want to focus.

You can gain a lot from your knowledge, merit is good for those who want to increase their rank so they can participate in signature campaigns, I have seen newbies with good knowledge on the Cryptocurrency market and trading and they are making a profit from what they know, if you have the knowledge you'll likely get merits.

If I see a good post and it happens that I have merit, I will give it to op without hesitation, because his post inspires me and obtains a new way of thinking. Meirit is an encouragement, not an end.

Both... Knowledge is important to make right and better decisions, where as merit gives your opinion more weightage. So having both is pretty cool

In my opinion both are important. Merit is the positive stimulus that makes it more likely that the behaviour of creating and replying to posts that adds to the body of knowledge in the  community and help members grow is repeated.

Firstly you need to have the right rules/guidelines guiding those you employ to work for you and solve problems. If they are able to solve the problems without compromising on the rules then their merit/reputation automatically increase.
That's basically what it means to have a merit-based work. There are qualities that are required for employees or job seekers to have in order to be considered on merit. So this is tested or verified before they qualify based on merit.
The ones earning higher merit must have gotten the required knowledge that enable them earn the Merit. So both Merit and Knowledge are needed for success.

If you based employment on merit, you are simply looking for who can do the job really well. Those who qualified are assumed to be knowledgeable in the job whether they learned that in school, church, home, etc. There are self-taught people who don't need to go through schools to qualify.
