I am suggesting  a new feature on bitcointalk.

There should be an option to donate to staff or other valued member making quality contributions on bitcointalk. Since this is crypto related forum, donation can be handled with bitcoin gateways. Do you think such a feature will be useful ?

Well... the options are there, the forum doesn't have to do anything special. Let me explain.

* The forum itself no longer needs donations. You can read more details on the official donations page.

* The staff is paid for their work. But if you want to donate to any user from the forum, whether staff or not, you should start by checking his profile.
Most probably you'll find there a bitcoin address for donations. And if you want to arrange something more complicated, you'll have to discuss/message the user.

So imho we're good and the forum doesn't have to add any feature for this.

In order to receive their payments for their moderation services, I understand that moderators are required to have a bitcoin address in their forum profile. If you want to donate to staff, you can use this information to send a bitcoin transaction accordingly.

As has already been said here, many users have a reference to their own BTC address in their profile or signature.
And the staff member (the one we are talking about here) has 100% a BTC address in their profile Smiley
I think an option for donations like Twitter now adds is not planned for epochtalk either.

Suggestions like this 'donation' have often been discussed in this forum, I give one example for you.
questions and suggestions.

However, in order to do something useful for the community, I would like to propose an idea. Thanks to the moderators Bitcointalk does not turn into a spammed trash can. They are doing a great job! What if we organize a donation fund where anyone could make a voluntary donation. The funds will be used to reward the forum team. The funds distribution model is a topic for public discussion: either it will be a regular vote, payments on request, or an equal division between all moderators. I am deeply convinced that there are many worthy veteran (legendary) members on the forum who could be entrusted to hold this fund (possibly a multisig). I am ready to be the first one to make a contribution to this fund.

And at the same time the answer to your good idea, you can read below.

While others in the thread have already covered the most common ways to help the forum, I'll add a few more:

  • If you have sMerit left over, merit high quality posts (especially if they were made by someone of a lower rank as that'll help them to rank up).
  • If you have something to promote, bid on the forum's monthly ad auction thread. The link to the current auction thread can be found at the top of https://bitcointalk.org/adrotate.php?adinfo. You both get to advertise and support the forum.
  • If you don't mind ads, disable ad block. If the ad is promoting something that you're interested in, check it out. New paying customers coming in via the ads is a win-win-win for all parties involved: the user finds a service / website he needed, the service / website gets a return on their ad investment and Bitcointalk shows that its ads are effective at attracting customers. Don't randomly click on ads you couldn't care less about though - that helps no one.
  • Offer services / goods on the forum. The marketplace boards (both regular and in the altcoin sections) are a big part of Bitcointalk. The more commercial activity there, the more likely business-minded users will choose Bitcointalk as their main platform for commerce.

However, as people have pointed out, there's a reason why Bitcointalk removed its donation address - it doesn't need financial support at the moment. As for mods, if you really want to gift a moderator (or any other user for that matter) some BTC, most moderators have a Bitcoin address in their profile. Click on their username and look for the "Bitcoin address:" field. If you're gonna pick a moderator to gift some BTC to, pick one of the dedicated board mods (who isn't a global moderator or admin).

Donations aren't needed. Theymos has said the forum has enough funds, but if the forum ever needed them they could just add things like more banner ads or more donator VIP ranks etc.

I hope you now understand and understand the 'why' donation is not needed here.

R

No.

Just no.

A moderator or mod might be inclined to favour someone with merits if they knew funds were then going to land in their donation tipping jar at the end of the day/week/month just to give one example.

Banning, or even Nuking the occasional user would be another way admin / mods might earn money from "random" donations with no oversight.

If someone is open to getting bribed, I don't think a lack of (presumably anonymous) donation option would make any difference. I've heard of this fancy internet money thing where you can pay someone directly at any time.

Just contact the person you wanted to donate BTC to through PMs if you're worried that the BTC address posted in their profile is no longer under their control.

.... and no it's not useful, OP. Sorry.

That would cool IMO. Twitter is having that feature as well. If I'm correct, tipping with bitcoin in Twitter is now available in iOS version and will be followed by Andriod soon as well.
An on forum tipping bot would also be cool; having an wallet for all but that's risky as well I guess, subjected to be hacked.
If someone is interested- https://www.theverge.com/platform/amp/2021/9/23/22689806/twitter-bitcoin-lightning-tipping-nft-authentication

It was suggested several times: Tipping micropayments on Bitcointalk.

A moderator or mod might be inclined to favour someone with merits if they knew funds were then going to land in their donation tipping jar at the end of the day/week/month just to give one example.
I doubt it, that would be a great risk for little money.

Do you think such a feature will be useful ?
No, because bitcoin as a tipping mechanism hasn't caught on, and if it hasn't by now it's never going to.  This has also been brought up before, though not in a long while.  Theymos isn't likely to implement any sort of feature like what you suggested--he hasn't added features that would add a lot more value to the forum as it is, so being able to tip mods or anyone else is off his to-do list.

As has been mentioned, a lot of members have their bitcoin address in their profile, so you can donate bitcoin to them if you want to.  Most people don't do that, though, which is why a tipping feature would be bound to fall into disuse.

I'm not to repeat what other already said. I just ask, how many people actually donate and would use such feature. I think that answer is quite obvious - very few people do such thing. I think that there is not enough demand that it would worth to put efforts into emplementing such feature. Especially when staff members have Bitcoin address on their profile and you can donate them if you want without special donate button.
Maybe something like Tipbot as UserU said would be cool thing, but Bitcoin probably isn't best option for such thing and using other currencies - well, I hardly can imagine such thing.

And the staff member (the one we are talking about here) has 100% a BTC address in their profile Smiley
I think an option for donations like Twitter now adds is not planned for epochtalk either.

Some tipbot would be cool though, like on Reddit. Smiley
Theymos has previously said that the forum will not ever hold money for users. Tipbots, by their nature need to hold user funds.

Also, anything that posts that a tip has been made is going to be annoying.

Maybe something like Tipbot as UserU said would be cool thing, but Bitcoin probably isn't best option for such thing and using other currencies - well, I hardly can imagine such thing.

The only other place that I know of to have such a tipping facility is Twitter which has a (third party add-on) which facilitates tips being sent via the Lightning Network.  I only have about 265 followers and follow about 65 users (and hardly ever mention bitcoin, or the forum for that matter) so I haven't bothered trying it out, but there are others here (at least one who had already posted) that might be able to provide some insight on how effective it is.

In order to receive their payments for their moderation services, I understand that moderators are required to have a bitcoin address in their forum profile. If you want to donate to staff, you can use this information to send a bitcoin transaction accordingly.
I suggested this feature not only for staff but also for other valuable members making quality posts here. Like if you see some detailed and informative post from some user, you can donate to him. I know that currently merits are there to reward them but some people might not be after ranks.

Many forum members have a bitcoin address listed in their Bitcoin address section of their profile. While this is not a requirement for non-moderator users, many experienced users who are most likely to make such posts do have an address listed.

If you look at my profile, you will see a bitcoin address listed. As someone who makes many very informative and valuable posts with over 1200 merit, I would encourage you to send coin if you want to see how well having a bitcoin address listed in a user's profile works.

Ah, so I guess such feature won't be considered at all. Fine by me though.

It will be very very rare occasion to happen so even if theymos wants to add this feature still it will be in the bottom of his to do list, however still there are ways to reward the valuable user with their Bitcoin address and I guess that is enough for now since we are talking about a situation it may never happen.
