Needing a formal organization is not something that is necessary for a social movement. I do think that bitcoins certainty is a social movement by itself. It's been only few years since the wake of people's awareness regarding true financial stability but cryptocurrencies are the ones who enabled this hands down.
- Connecting people from across the Globe together
- Giving people the financial freedom they deserve
- Challenging the public norms regarding money and investments
- Changing the rich getting richer and poor getting poorer mentality
- Giving people more options to connect/earn/take their businesses world wide
- Making transactions more open, challenging corruption
There are so many things that I can think of honestly, that clearly pertains to a social movement brewing in the corrupt governance which is destroying the economic stability and interaction, cryptocurrencies like Bitcoins are providing an alternative to grow as a whole and connect more with people across the Globe, not just the people but economy as well.

Bitcoin could be said to be a social movement because it was invented to solve a problem with how people control their money but there is no central figure who is in charge of Bitcoin. Bitcoin is guided by the developers and the community. I do not think a social movement or a currency needs one person to be in charge of the direction of the project that is what is good about open source projects the community can take it and turn it into something that everyone agrees is the best choice. I not only think Bitcoin is a social movement as well as a currency I think Bitcoin has been a very successful social movement and has changed the lives and the way people think for the better for many people who have given it a chance. I say it is a matter of time before Bitcoin becomes something that is routinely used in countries instead of something that is called edgy technology by a lot of people atm.

I do not think so, bitcoin is a solution to a problem, basically governments took control of issuing currencies and since then they have been defrauding the population, bitcoin solves this by offering a currency that cannot be controlled or censored completely by them while at the same time giving you complete control over your wealth.

However social movements could form around it in order to support it or they could use bitcoin for their own means, after all a government that has control of the financial system can easily shut down any opposition by just closing down their bank accounts, something that is not possible if you are holding that wealth in bitcoin.

I would say no, because I don't think all Bitcoiners are actively trying to make Bitcoin the dominant currency, most Bitcoiners are just holding it to reap profit. I don't see any discussions about plans how to make Bitcoin replace fiat currency, everyone is just saying "when Bitcoin will replace fiat and banks its price will be $4,000,000" as if it will magically happen on its own.

I think that Bitcoin can be described as a social movement. People are interested in Bitcoin for many reasons, but the core motivation for Bitcoin is the improvement of society. Anyone that thinks "Bitcoin helps me" should realize that "Bitcoin helps us", and then ultimately that "Bitcoin helps all of us."

I don't think all Bitcoiners are actively trying to make Bitcoin the dominant currency, most Bitcoiners are just holding it to reap profit.

I agree that most people in the cryptocurrency space are just speculators, but the social movement must advance in order for these speculators to achieve their goals.

So as a result, even the speculators are promoting the social movement (which why I think there is some justification to describing Bitcoin as a pyramid scheme).

Probably, as bitcoin is borderless, anyone can join in the movement and promote bitcoin around the globe. But I would say it's informal movement, others might see bitcoin as a way for financial freedom, majority wanted it to a be a payment scheme, majority as store of value and make profits in the future. So loosely, bitcoin can fit on any social movement that we have seen in the past, but no concrete definition per se.

It's almost a social movement to fight the people on top who only make money out of the people. FED for instance. It's about fixing the economy and in order to do that is to fix the money. There is no real organization but just consolidates people to join the small ecosystem but eventually got bigger that we now see today.

Satoshi could have been jailed already if he is identified and probably the blockchain is already not immutable and worse being registered and trademarked which nobody could ever create another for its going to be illegal.

Well, I don't believe that a social movement has to have a formal organization behind it and this is proven by Bitcoin right now. Or we can say that Bitcoin is a decentralized social movement...that can be the right term. Now, if the idea is to have an organization behind it because it is a social movement, that will be against the very idea of Bitcoin itself so in other words it would be a contradiction in itself. Bitcoin succeeded because of the people who believe on it and this will be the same throughout its existence.

Bitcoin is an interesting tool and capable of moving people (emotionally) towards freedom. Bitcoin is an individual economic solution that is driven by social factors as a "messenger" and will continue to be sustainable.

I agreed with you but in addition that cryptocurrency especially bitcoin investment has eradicate the poor life living in different countries,and from my views bitcoin is the top investment that yields positively than some of the manual business today, the adoption of bitcoin is getting some individual to accelerate positively, so emphasising on the social movement via op, i will say that bitcoin is decentralized and it's  not open as we taught, like now some countries never legalize adoption of bitcoin because of their government.

I think not yet because bitcoin is not adopted globally so it is just an alternative way to have a new investment and payment system. But soon, after many more countries adopt crypto and use it daily, maybe crypto can be a general social movement. Bitcoin is not like an organization that we know usual because bitcoin is stand-alone without anyone can control it.

But so far, bitcoin has helped many people who want to join in the bitcoin world and make money and have a new investment. Bitcoin gives us a new way from the traditional way with the technology is developed better.

No,I don't consider Bitcoin/altcoins to be a social movement.
The term "social movement" is more related to political parties,non-profit organizations,human rights movements,religious movements,etc..
Bitcoin is a currency/financial asset and the blockchain technology is a payment network/system.
The Bitcoin/crypto community is definitely NOT a social movement.The people,who own a certain financial asset cannot be called a "social movement" or a "community".
We don't need any formal organization to "stand behind" Bitcoin.

I'm not sure if it can be described as a social movement, but it definitely can be used to amplify social movements. Especially with the safety, security, anonymity and decentralised fashion of blockchain, crypto will be the way to expand social movements in my opinion.

Because people say everything and anything,,, and do not back it up with action.

Look at the influencers on social media who are talking about Bitcoin like this. Are any of them developers, did they really fight for Bitcoin or contribute to it, or even USE it the way forum people and developers here are? Most do not probably even use a real wallet, just rich investors who have a lot of Bitcoin and hoarding it to sell at a certain price.

A popular idea does not make it a real one that is actually happening.

I consider bitcoin a social movement because:
The community is involved in the project. Jeff Garzik, one of the bitcoin developers, explains that "Bitcoin is a peaceful social revolution."
Many of the early adopters believed in this revolution and were strong and influential enough to push it through.

Because bitcoin is not an organization this all belongs to the community and the community.  Anyone here has the right to develop, own and anything from bitcoin. They have financial freedom here for everyone.
