Less motherboard really equals to less power consumption? I have four rigs with 6x GPUs in each but the frame can contain 12x GPUs each too and I have a motherboard among the four rigs that can contain 12x GPU, a friend came by and said I should just out 12 GPUs in the MOBO says I will safe more power this way

True, thats minus a CPU, a motherboard and a power supply and possible extra watts from ram stick and HDD, your friend is right you can safe up to 100 or 150watt this way, something I would recommend if your farm is running off grid with high bills or solar panels

Maximum you will save is 200-220 watt as I have measured a motherboard of intel 6th gen with ssd and ddr4 ram which do not consume almost at all energy except motherboard and processor and the readings in the wall was 100-110 watt for this kind of motherboard.Based on your electricity price this may be worth or not worth at all as if you have low price energy it isn't while if you have really high energy price it may be good but I would not recommend if your 6 GPU rigs are running well. They may not run well in another 12 slot motherboard.

It depends on the type of motherboard he/she is using, the newer the CPU and MoBO the better in energy saving for example a 7th gen CPU has lower nm CPU rating meaning they save  more power than a 3th gen CPU and MoBO too

Well i have a 6 x RX6800 rig each GPU undervolted drawing 150W a peice from two 1000W psu that at the wall combined with system overhead draw 1200W.

The system overhead for CPU, RAM etc is about 200W (bit less but nice round number that). If I add 6 more GPU t make 12 to this rig i will certainly save the 200W system overhead from for e.g. building a totally new rig with its own overhead for CPU, RAM etc so yeah your friend is right on that.

However your PSU requirement will double and so will the loss from power conversion efficiency. On that i did a test this week looking for power coversion efficiency savings so replaced the two 1000W psu with a single 2000W psu hoping to see a 100W saving. The result was disappointing given i was looking to save at least 50W from the PSU power comversion but that 2000W supply actually added 40W and was drawing 1240W at the wall in contrast to the 1200W of the dual psu setup. It surprised me as a single PSU is more efficient than two PSU having less of its own overheads in loss so i consider that 2000W PSU poor quality tho it wasnt cheap and so its going back to seller given the fan on it was screaming flat out at just over half of its capacity so no good, no confidence in that and no peace n quiet. I think im trying to say quality psu is a key and the more power it can output perhaps better to reduce overheads in theory.

Food for thought....

Disconnect all video cards and use a multimeter to see how many watts your motherboard is consuming from the wall.
Modern motherboards with a processor consume 50-70 watts. If you use a USB flash drive instead of a hard disk, then this is an additional 20-30 watts of savings.
A mining farm with 12 GPUs is harder to maintain, and you lose more hashrate on crashes.
