Usb sticks don't last long for mining?

Is there anyone running hiveOS on usb stick that lasted over a year already? Mine keep dying on me after three months of use, they started behaving very slow and sluggish and at one point they stop booting up and once I go back to HDD the OS runs better

Yeah some are awful, Avoid cheap brands.. I've had many 'Intergral' USB pens die within days.

Buy Sandisk or Kingston brand.. I've had these operational for 2-3 years with very few failures.

You must deactivate the logs if you are using a usb stick -> look in the FAQ from HiveOS

I use Sandisk and have some almost 6 years old now mining everyday.

I have a Sandisk running since 2016 and it never complained for quite some years,now I am back with Windows 10 mining because of me having the boards with a friend and not alone anymore and he likes Windows mostly because he is familiar with it.It is the problem of the brand,Kingston also are good,lately Corsair is bringing us the Voyager series which so far I have used it at work and is awesome just like anything else that Corsair produces.

This is crazy, I have four SanDisk 32gb usb sticks and three are dead on me already, is there something I'm missing here? It seems usb are bad for nonstop operations aka read and write, all this nonsense stopped when I bought cheap SSD drives instead

USD sticks aren't meant to be used constantly. You should use them to store data. They are not for constantly writing/reading data. For that purpose, just get a SSD. If you can't afford an SSD, get an HDD. There are some ultra durable SD cards but I don't recommend them neither because you can get bigger faster multiple SSD's for the same price.

The problem with your thinking is, you assume everybody has only 1 GPU on their PC's. Wake the fuck up. Some people can have multiple GPU's on their PC's. It is 2021 now.

HiveOS recommend deactivate logs if you using usb flashdrive. If not, the usb flashdrive will die very fast.

The hard drive is actually faster and more reliable. I use old 80GB Sata hard drives that are 15 years old. With some USB flash drives, I also had no luck and they broke, but I did not even try to look for the causes of breakdowns.
A USB flash drive consumes less power, but is not as reliable as a hard drive.

Right, keep killing your usb over and over, those who are complaining about death of usb in a very short time are those that failed to deactivate log, this was supposed to reduce stress on the usb drive that's why hiveOS Dev said users must deactivate log

Yeah if you got some old HDD then use those instead of USB thumb drives. I’ve had issues also. Most common one is it get corrupted and you just need to reformat and load the ISO again and it’ll work again for a few weeks/months until it either gets corrupted again or dies completely.

I got fed up that I just took the old old HDD from my basement and never had any issues. The HDD uses maybe a few watts more power but it’ll be dead reliable in the long run. Every motherboard has SATA and every PSU has it also so you won’t get issues getting it working unless you maybe are using an old IDE hard drive from 1995.

yes guys i would recomend using ssd rather than usb stick, and ssd getting cheaper anyway after m2 nvme taking the place buy 120/128 gb ssd is good rather installing on usb stick

ssd disk increases the boot speed of windows. For Linux systems, the boot time of the operating system with ssd and hdd is the same, or the difference is very small.
Why overpay for something that you can buy very cheap.
Used hard drives can be bought in bulk at very competitive prices.

I just ordered 10 120gb ssds for 219 usd. I had a few coupons so they cost me 160 at 16 a drive they are worth it.
