I on my rig today and I saw a smoke from one of my Vega 56 cards, I use a screwdriver to open the GPU and I notice a silver steel lead like popped open, picture below pls someone tell me what caused this?

Boss are you saying the power supply is responsible? I don't know what about GPUs so I don't know what power choke is, this GPU was bought used but have worked for two months already

You can see the damaged parts.  One has desoldered one side from the board and the part directly above it is missing a chunk where it blew apart.    Parts need to be replaced then check for other damage to say traces and / or additional parts.  Doesnt look good.  And the paste looks like its seen better days on the gpu chip itself.

Forget about what caused it unless you already have reason to suspect something other than the used GPU
you recently purchased. The cost and effort of doing RCA is not worth it. If you had the skills you could
do some troubleshooting yourself but there's no simple quick answer.

it was almost certainly a short circuit, even if the power choke is not damaged i would change it anyway, then you have to see if the gpu is faulty, you still have to do a complete check before turning everything back on both the circuits and the card

There is no easy way to fix this unfortunately. The card is for parts only unfortunately. Sure you can easily buy that part on many electronic websites or take it from another dead GPU you got however when it blows up like this, it usually rips out the contact terminal on the PCB and you won’t be able to solder it back in.

Only was would be to run a trace where that connection goes and jump it however if this part needs to be cooled someway then it’s not possible.

I had many GPUs go bad this way. If it’s not old, sell on eBay “For parts or repair” and you will get some money back.

1-power choke.
It seems to me that this is mechanical damage that was accidentally done by the previous owner.
2- soldering defect. This does not happen in a video card factory.
3-Traces of soldering flux. So this video card was being repaired, and then it was sold to you.

I am a poor specialist in determining the cause of breakdowns by photography, but it seems to me that you were sold a video card after a bad repair.

Poor power supply may be the cause, but this can be easily checked with a multimeter. Check the 12 volt power supply in the 8 pin connector when mining. If the voltage is 11.4-11.5 volts, then your power supply is crap. Also, there should be no power surges.

I'm not sure you will be able to fix this on your own, I had a dead Vega card too, there is short from the 8pin slot on the GPU but I still can't figure out where its coming from, I've changed all power choke but the short still stands there, don't know where to check again

Power choke breaks less often. The voltage is supplied to them through transistors, and the transistors are controlled by a PWM controller. So, as a rule, the cause of the breakdown is a microcircuit with transistors (2 in the photo) or a PWM controller.
But that is a very ideal case, as a rule, everything is much more complicated.

I'd dish that card if I were you unless you can find a qualified personnel in your area, GPUs are much more harder to fix that's why I recommend buying them new, I know used cards are more affordable but you can never tell how the first owner used them, might not even be the only owner maybe it's from different resellers who knows? Stay away from used GPUs

Dont throw it away....parts cards are sold all the time.  GPU chip may still be good.  While you may not have the gear and know how there are people that do.  Stick on Ebay as parts card.  Seems they sell for $50~$110 depending on non working parts card.

after replaced the fan, still not function and try using power from motherboard, the gpus getting crash after minutes for mining, then i tried steam up the pcb with solder steam, lol that fixed my gpus, maybe some water still inside the pcb

Do not connect this video card to the motherboard, otherwise you risk losing the motherboard as well.
If there are good masters near you, then give this video card for diagnostics, if you do not want to waste your time, then sell it. In my country, a broken RX 470 4 GB video card costs $ 100, the current that you can open an auction for your video card from $ 150-200.

Generally when something is water damaged there are 2 ways it get damaged. First way is the salt water corrodes a few parts or solder joints, so when you rehot the solder pretty much , you can get it working if all it was a broken joint.

Another way it damages is because it bridges connections causing a short somewhere. Sometimes all you need to do is clean it with rubbing alcohol and remove the corrosion and it’ll work again. I tried this before with water damaged phones. About 50% can be fixed this way.

Never seen power choke shorts and i dont see any burn on pcb. take some more pictures and tell your hardware. You can run simple test using multimeter to check if GPU still alive. I cant explain here how to check gpu look in internet. Vegas usually GPU dies sorry to say that.

It is not your power choke that burned out, but the power control chips, which consist of transistors. Most power circuits are for the processor, and 1 or 2 are for memory. If the processor is burnt out, repairs will be very expensive.
But 8 GB memory can be sold profitably. In my country, 8 such memory modules cost $ 200.
