I'm not sure if this had been asked before. This is just an example of some odds that I saw recently Fighter A (1.30) vs Fighter B (3.65). With this obviously, Fighter A is the people's champ and Fighter B is the underdog.
Regardless of who is bigger and undefeated record, let's say you have no idea who these fighters are because the names can't even be read like Ulshrkubyki vs Ykwehgyfvbh. If you only have $10 left in your sports betting account, would you go for the champ which you can only earn $3, or go for the underdog which if he got lucky can triple your money?

First if you are not certain about the Fighters, you do your research and check statistics from their very recent encounters, before you place your bet. You check their preparations for the encounter. Fighter A the champ may just be an overhyped fighter with old glory, who may loose as a result of underestimating the underdog, who in some cases train very hard and when they are out to fight, you see the hunger in them to win. I am a risk take plus I like big wins, i may decide to risk it and bet on the underdog knowing a win will bring big profit.

Luck is important with gambling, but when going for the underdog we need to take in account the odds margin. Here it is 3.65 which is quite high in my opinion. For this reason I'll pick the winning profit of $3 out of $10. In such matches it is very hard to make profit through underdog win. If the odds were between 2.2 to 2.6 then one can give a try.

Personally, I will go with the favorite, assuming all circumstances are true, the bettors doesn't know the fighter and obviously you didn't know the records, only the odds. That's what a smart gambler usually does, for the favorite, maybe the returns are small, but it's worth the risk. Unless you are really a gambler who loves to bet on the underdog in every fight and you are extremely lucky.

If the sports you are betting are fighting sports with short period of time on each match. Betting on underdog is not a bad idea because this kind of sports has always a possibility to turn around all the advantage of one fighter with just a single mistake or a lucky punch compared to other competitive sports like basketball, baseball and football that usually has a long match duration which team with a good players benefits the because they have enough time to show there skills, Even a tons of mistake can be recover on half time or so on.

Uhm wouldn't you actually identify who's the underdog and who's the favored just from the odds themselves? That would ruin the premise of trying to say regardless of what record is better than the other since the odds themselves would be the best proof. Besides, in the first place, the premise of sports betting was trying to understand the players themselves in a way that would help you identify whether the person themselves could even win against the opponent.
Though answering your question, I'd probably go for the underdog. Though I think it would still depend on where it actually took place? Like if it's a big fight or not, cause if it is, then just the fact that an underdog got matched to a champion seems like it tells something about the underdogs skills.

I think betting as an underdog is not problem since it doesn't mean that if you are new to this you can't bet. As an underdog i think it could boost my confident since evertime first time i bet is i could win which is really good. Weather what sport is that or your are new or not as long as you bet it is okay

Your example is enough to answer your question , if i am gonna lose only 10 $ then i will rather risk this to the Underdog in which I have a Bigger amount of winning no matter how strong the champ is but winning 3$ is not my kind . I am going to Gamble so why not play like a gambler ? and besides either way it is the outcome will decide who will win .

If you have fixed Fighter A to be defeated by that underdog then you can simply bet on underdog to multiply you money by 3x. Lol . Yeah, this is how match fixing are working. Bookies will not wait for their luck to favor them but they will spend big money to make any champ to lose. (I know it is illegal in almost every country but for understanding purposes I am stating these here and it does not mean I am urging anyone to go for match fixing or does not mean I am into that kind of practices). This is why unexpected results in any sport might get us big profits if we would have placed bet on "unexpected result". But, honestly I do not have any such gut to risk by betting on underdogs.

$10? In most cases, I always bet that amount left on high odds especially in live betting where you can see mostly odds over @10. It's like throwaway money for me so not taking seriously my bet. So go ahead, bet that $10 on high odds since like you have mentioned, let's say we don't have an idea about the match. I'm always like that when a small amount happened to be left in my gambling site's account. But if I go serious mode and of course, it's not a $10 bet, I always take lots of considerations before placing a bet on high odds. For the record, I'm an enthusiast of high odds and there are lots of settled bets already that I was able to win with high odds.

I always go for the underdog if I can but there has to be sufficient excuse to do so or its throwing money away. Underdog bet in some ways can be less risky because any team or bet can lose and underdog requires only small bet placed due to the high odds. People chase names, there is always value in considering the unpopular option some, also consider handicap bets imo

One thing about gambling is that it is fun, you can go for any team that you like while using the amount of money you can lose and not think about because it is a very small amount of money compared to the amount you are collecting monthly. Using $10 for gambling is not bad at all, but there are some games I can go for either strong team A or weak team B. If team A has lost form, I can go for team B at times but only in few times that I believe team B might win, it has happened many times before. But normally I will prefer to go for team A if the team is stronger than team B rather than losing my money.

As practice shows bookmakers are rarely wrong in presenting the odds as they work professionals who know very well about sports events and spend a lot of time on the analysis. If I had the last $10 in my account, I would have most likely risked it and bet on the fighter with the higher odds. If I had more money, I would have listened to the bookmakers and bet on a fighter with lower odds.

If we talk about the short distance and the tough need to get $ 3 then I will bet on the favorite. But if we talk about the desire to win regularly, then the bet on the underdog looks more reasonable, since it is believed that due to the mood of the crowd, the bookmaker's margin when betting on the favorite is greater than the bookmaker's margin when betting on the underdog.

I agree with you STT, there should be a reason behind going for the underdog... sometimes people bet just on names, and the things are not like bookies present it, simply top dog is not doing well lately and the underdog can surprise! And that happens in all sports! But as you said, if it's just a random underdog bet it's like throwing money, people should know more about fighters/teams/players if they wish to make a good bet and have chances for the win!

This is what I do sometimes. When the match is unfamiliar to me, I'll go with the underdog if I want to. It's true the amount for underdogs isn't that much and I think of it as an advantage if you always go with them because odds are higher to them. People chase names, there is always value in considering the unpopular option some, also consider handicap bets imo
Sometimes it's worth to take the risk with the underdogs but if you really think that the name you're betting with and despite the odd isn't high, as long as there's a winnable amount with your bet, then I'll get on it.

If it's the UFC i'd probably take the underdog since there's usually more value on the underdog knowing there are different ways for them to win depending on their fighting style. The same can be said for the favorite but from my experience, upsets tend to happen more often. As much as possible it's better to look for any information between the two so you can measure if the odds given by the books are actually accurate or not based on your own point of view.

It takes very less time to learn about those fighters, no need to check everything but their previous games and how they won/lose, what are their fighting strategies, strengths and weaknesses. Then, if you believe that the weakness of fighter A can be beaten up by the strength of fighter B, then you may go for fighter B and instead of waiting, you know there are cashout options also available in these games? If you see the game going in your fighter's favor, then you decide whether to watch the whole match and wait for the results or keep your greed aside and cashout what you're already winning.

I think I will support the underdog player if I do not know both players because the underdog player can have support from the people who watch the match and sometimes, the underdog can give surprises to the audience.
But if you do not want to lose any money, you do not have to force yourself to choose any player who will match and only place your bet on the player you will know. That will be safe for your money because you have knowledge about the player and know how big the chance is for you to win.

If you have no idea about the fighters and their abilities, going blind on the bet is not different than playing dice whether you choose the underdog or the favorite. Since you don't know anything about these fighters, how are you going to do an educated bet? You simply cannot do that. You can play dice and have the same outcome in the end.
