I agree with you, but I must point one thing, it's important how big we bet! Is it some low amount just for fun, to support your favorite team/player even they are underdogs, or you bet with some higher amount on a single game/match and you believe that underdog can bring you a nice profit!

To not even comment on the first one, people can bet for fun on underdogs for all sorts of reasons. The second one is something more serious, and for that, someone should have complete knowledge about the game, about how that sport works, how odds work... and maybe more important that someone should be brave enough to place that bet!

Why am I saying all this... the other day I had a feeling that Juventus will lose against Verona! I had knowledge, I even researched that specific game, but in the end, I wasn't brave enough to place that bet! I played it with a low amount, but I could win more if I had more courage! A recent upset just happened in boxing between Caraballo and Sultan.
The odds before the fight for Sultan was about 5.x, so Caraballo was the heavy favorite because he has 0-loss record.
So sometimes, it is really worth betting on underdog especially if you know the caliber of the underdog.

One thing about gambling is that it is fun, you can go for any team that you like while using the amount of money you can lose and not think about because it is a very small amount of money compared to the amount you are collecting monthly. Using $10 for gambling is not bad at all, but there are some games I can go for either strong team A or weak team B. If team A has lost form, I can go for team B at times but only in few times that I believe team B might win, it has happened many times before. But normally I will prefer to go for team A if the team is stronger than team B rather than losing my money.

Every once is a while you get lucky and get away with it but if the bookie was losing big amounts because of that game, they can always cancel the bets and say that it is their right to do so. Yes, I also saw this sometimes, but usually it happens even before the start of the fight, since the bookmakers see a big imbalance in the bets and do not want to take risks (suspecting a contractual fight or something like that). But these are the rarest events compared to the total number of fights. We can assume that bookmakers rarely make mistakes. But wishing to win and winning itself are completely two different things though? If it were a tournament bracket kind of thing, underdogs could easily be spotted and honestly, just from those data that could be obtained while they are climbing the ladder and that should be enough to create a preliminary judgement on whether the team could make an upset or not. That is how betting odds should be between strong team or person and an underdog that is competing against the strong, it may differ from game to game as I do not know much about odds of many others matches, but in football, the underdog will even have a very big odd like 7x or more when the strong club will have very low odd like 1.2 or lower.

There are times I still go for underdog not thinking of the fake odds, example of this case was when Leicester won EPL, you can see the big odds that was always given to Leicester and we know how very possible Leicester will win the match and won the match when playing with strong clubs like Man City. Leicester matches were always productive for me when I took the club to win that season.

I do think that it all boils down to the person's capital and the amount that he is willing to bet. Personally, I bet on the 'underdog' on games or sports that I know nothing about. If I know something about a particular game and their teams (e.g. Dota 2 teams, etc.), I would be more inclined to bet against the underdog and bet on the more popular team since I have personal knowledge of their statistics, data, etc.

Betting on the underdog can be really fun especially if they get to win. For example, in the latest Dota 2 International, the team that won was considered as an 'underdog' though I betted against them and lost like 30$.
