Hello all,

unfortunately I can not find what I am looking for on the Internet and hope to get help here in this forum.

Is there a platform that can generate a BTC wallet that requires 2 passwords - similar like multisig. So to get into the wallet and send BTC from there, you would have to enter 2 different passwords dependent on each other.

The passwords have to be changable independently of each other. So everyone with a password can handle it for itself.

I don't know if there is a specific software wallet which offers this functionality built in, but I already have this set up on a couple of my wallets.

I have an airgapped computer running Linux using full disk encryption. On that airgapped computer, I have Electrum installed. To access my Electrum wallet, I need to first enter the decryption password to allow the drive to boot, and then I have to enter the Electrum wallet password (which is different) to allow Electrum to decrypt the wallet.

You could also achieve this kind of set up using a hardware wallet with a passphrase. You would first need to enter your PIN to unlock the hardware wallet, and then you need to enter your passphrase to access the hidden passphrased wallet.

Alternatively again, you could just create a 2-of-2 multisig using Electrum and have both wallets on the same computer, which would achieve the same result as requiring two different passwords to spend the coins. Once Electrum starts supporting taproot, there is no significant disadvantage in terms of transaction size or fees paid to using multisig.

You can use some implementation of Shamirs Secret Sharing. Unfortunately, I don't believe any wallet software implements this. I would also point out that if you were to implement this, once you decrypt your wallet, the private key would be available in RAM (as would be the case if your wallet was encrypted by a single passphrase.

The passwords have to be changable independently of each other. So everyone with a password can handle it for itself.
it is important to point out that when you encrypt something, you do not have a password, you have a passphrase. This is true even if your passphrase is a single word such as "November". It is also not possible to change a passphrase. If someone has a copy of your encrypted file, if they learn your passphrase, they will be able to decrypt it. What you can do is decrypt your file, and create a new file with a new encryption key/passphrase. If you do this, you will need to destroy any old copies of the file in which you used your old passphrase, as this old file can be decrypted using your old passphrase.

I don't think there's a platform like this that can generate different passwords upon wallet creation.
So I'm thinking about an app wallet like Electrum or a Coinomi and creating an air-gapped wallet that has a different password on the device but I think only one password that has characters will create but not on the app wallet itself, it's on the device and you can't create two different passwords at a time with the same wallet. (Just my wild imagination)

Any of them can access the wallet using two air-gapped wallets that have the same private key and password.  Maybe in that way, there's an answer to your question.

But I think it seems this idea isn't a good idea sharing on one wallet.  You can create more than one Bitcoin wallet if you can.

Is the idea that 2 people would be working on the same machine to send transactions and you need both users to enter their password for this to happen? ie. you're essentially trying to force multisig but using just a password instead of signing with private keys? Huh

I don't think any system exists... at least, I don't know of any such system. Personally, I think you'd be better off just having a 2-2 MultiSig wallet in a wallet like Electrum. Each user would have their own copy of that wallet with their own password.

When you want to send coins, either person would be able to open their wallet and create and partially sign the transaction (using their password) and then pass to the other person to sign and send using their password.

The passwords have to be changable independently of each other. So everyone with a password can handle it for itself.
With a standard MultiSig wallet, as described above, each of the user's copies of the multisig wallet would operate independently of the other, so the passwords could be changed independently of the other without issue.

I guess, in theory you could have the wallet file or the entire folder its in encrypted so you need a password to have whatever application you are using to access it. And then you could have the application itself require a password for the wallet.
Don't know if that would work but it might do what the OP wants.
