Major players in the Bitcoin (BTC) mining industry have their sights set on nuclear energy as pressure mounts to go green.

Nuclear energy could present a “tremendous opportunity” to introduce “enormous amounts of clean, carbon-free” energy to the base load, said GRIID vice president Harry Sudok at the ‘Bitcoin & Beyond Virtual Summit’ on Nov. 10. GRIDD is an American company that procures low-cost, renewable energy to build vertically-integrated Bitcoin mining facilities.

According to Sudock, past subsidy programs and discourse about renewable energy have largely focused on solar and wind power and neglected to consider the potential benefits of nuclear energy.

“The growth rate is largely focused around solar and wind right now, and that’s just the reality of the programs that have been rolled out over the last 8-10 years. But what we’d love to see is an expansion of nuclear,” he said.

Blockstream chief strategy officer Samson Mow was a panelist alongside Sudock to discuss the complexities of Bitcoin mining and energy expenditure.

Mow referenced the domineering role that ‘FUD’ tends to have i discussions around Bitcoin mining, which he said can lead to misunderstandings not only about Bitcoin mining, but also about energy production more generally.

If going green is the way to go, am afraid bitcoin miners will only come from certain parts of the world where nuclear energy is available and also sets our miners right in the hands of the regulators and tax authorities to control how this industry will be run. Afaik what we should avoid by all cost is being put in one location because of the limited nuclear power points around the world, the success of the mining industry also relies in decentralization and lets keep it this way.

nuclear power is great but when you saw the news some country is trying to replace nuclear with other source energy because safety reason, but to me nuclear is clean energy rather the fossil fuel right

Nuclear is the best  and cheapest  rather than the wind and solar energy for mining and bitcoin will top forever because it will be safe than other energy.and it can manage their power to achieve their goal.

the "spent nuclear fuel is harmful" argument is very questionable. Humans don't create radioactive substances , they exist in soil and then are concentrated to the extremes to create nuclear fuel and then once they are used up they go back from where they were taken. So the "polluting " argument is kind of made up. Unlike products from oil extracted from deepest pockets a earth crust or plastic created from this oil, all this radioactivity existed in nature before us.

Wind mills and solar panels have a limited useful life and need to be disposed of at the end of their useful life. So they have very little “emissions” actually being released while they are producing energy, but once that stops, they put out a lot of emissions that are comparable to other energy sources.

Nuclear energy would solve any energy crisis and is by far the cleanest energy source available, when judging by the useful life of the equipment and the actual emissions generated by the production of the energy. Nuclear energy is also by far the cheapest to produce (including the cost of depreciation and the cost of disposing spent nuclear waste).

I can potentially see bitcoin miners getting into the energy business and buying up electric companies in order to improve their energy costs. I can potentially see a miner buying up a nuclear power plant, although it would need to be a rather large miner.
