Your Google verification code shouldn't be sent to your email; it should come from your 2-fa app(Google Authenticator, Authy, etc). There's a different between your Google 2fa code, and your email verification code.

Or am I missing something here? Give us more information.

When I open the app, I go to my initials in the upper left hand corner, then Settings>Security>Google Verification..And then it's supposed to send a code to the email address I have on file and nothing is there. I have the Google Authenticator app but am not quite sure what to do with it.

With how you described it, there's supposed to be a popped up asking for a code but that should come from the Google authenticator app like what @mk4 said. Open it in your mobile and check if there's a Kucoin in there with six digit codes. If there's none, you probably haven't set it up yet.

If I understand correctly, you haven't set up your Google Authenticator yet, and are planning to set it up, hence they're sending you an email code to verify that it's not a hacker/scammer setting up the authenticator.

If so, this seems to be a problem on their side. Assuming that there's nothing wrong with ProtonMail currently, all you can do is to contact their support: https://support.kucoin.plus/hc/en-us/requests/new

or maybe contact them on Twitter if you're impatient: https://twitter.com/KuCoinCom

Google Authenticator doesnt seem like a good idea..It has no security measure for accessing the code. You just open the app and there it is...So, if I lose my phone or it's stolen, any accounts attached to that app could be compromised...

The same thing could be said about 2FA codes being sent through SMS or emails but again, you're not supposed to store large amounts in an exchange in the first place.

If you want better security for your account, you can grab a Yubi key. I can't remember if Kucoin supports it, but I know that there are a lot of exchanges that do.

Not sure on the Google authenticator app's current state, but there are alternatives that has pin locks. Also, if your phone gets stolen and the thief manages to easily get into your stuff easily without lock screen security in the first place, then you're probably doing it wrong.

If your phone does not have a screen lock and Google authentication is on the same phone with the exchange account then you are at risk. If the phone is android then you can erase the data in case of a stolen phone. But you should write 2FA private key somewhere else, so in case of stealing your phone, you can access your account immediately and erase data from the stolen phone.

It would be better to install the google authenticator in another device. The thief can't access your account only with google authenticator.
If you install kucoin, google authenticator, your email application all in one device, then your account may be compromised in the case your phone is stolen.

Also, do not forget to keep the secret key (the key kucoin gives you for setting up 2FA in google authenticator). It can be used if you don't have access to your phone for any reason.

Almost every app has PIN Security, or your device security (app lock) can do the work.

When setting up every app's 2fa you should backup the secret keys for your main backup as I don't know if google auth has ways to recover if ever your phone got break or lost. That's why I used authy, coz that feature wasnt implemented yet when I used google auth way back the years.

When you activate the 2FA for your account, you will have two methods to do it via
  • QR code
  • 2FA code: that is a mix of characters and numbers
Remember both QR code and 2FA code represents the same thing so you are fine if you back up either one of them. I would prefer to use 2FA activation code rather than QR code. Because I feel it is easier to try it if one of characters or numbers is missing or damaged by any reason. With QR code, if the image is blurry, I don't think of anyway to recover it.

More important, many people don't backup the activation code or QR code so in case their device is broken, they can not self-recover 2FA. The only option for them is create a support ticket and wait for help from exchange. It takes time and I don't want to put myself into such situation.

In the case someone hasn't saved that code, it's still possible to backup the 2FA codes.

Google authenticator allows you to export your accounts using a QR code. (more than 1 QR code, if you have many accounts)
You can save that QR code and use it whenever you want to use a new device for any reason.
To do so, you should tap on the "3 dots" button at top of the screen, select transfer accounts and then "Export accounts".

Since your phone doesn't allow you to take a screenshot from the QR code due to security reasons, you have to take a photo using another device.

It's not clear if it's about the verification code that come upon first registration or the one for login. From previous replies, it's clear that it's not an issue about the 2A code which you need to set once succeed to register [it will help you avoid ssues with login security standards].
I think it's an error from the system ; it happened often with many great services and i personally face the same issue usually with codes sent from google. KuCoin should be receiving thousands of code sign up requestes
