I registered on the forum on October 19, 2020, 18:55:33 via random email [forgot if I had signed up for gmail]. Just signed up for gmail, but unfortunately my efforts were in vain because the email registered in my account seems to have been owned by someone else or I forgot the password. Though I think it's ok but I want to replace that email with the one I registered [active email] just because I want to get forum notification about replies to thread I created as well as anyone who PMs me.

My question:
  • Should I sign the message?
  • If one day my account is hacked [hope I haven't done anything wrong] will I be asked to send a PM from the email I first registered for this account or the email I used after I changed it?

If your account was hacked

Email recoveries...@bitcointalk.org, ideally from the account's email address. Include your username and a brief description of the details of how/when the account was hacked. A signature will likely be required (see below).

If I refer to the post excerpt above, it looks like the admin will ask me to PM them with the email I used when registering an account [in case of hacking] which I can't access at the moment [forgot password/email has been registered by someone else ] . Do you have the right solution here?

If you stake an address, sign a message, I think that's enough for recovering your account if anytime in the future your account get hacked. If you can successfully sign message from the same address, I think you will have no problem. Sending mail from registered mail address is for people who can't sign message possibly though I'm not exactly sure.

I never saw that any mod or admin asked to send a PM from the email which is used to register on the forum, as the above post says sign-in from a message is the only required thing in case of recovery. But if you used to register on this forum via random email the account can be locked if the actual email owner knows bitcointalk and don't want someone to use his email by someone else. So you have a choice to change your email in your account related settings under your profile.

I have sign message before and if needed then I can do it again now with a little extra reason about changing bitcointalk account email. Thanks for your responese, but I'm expecting more now.

I'm not 100% sure that the email I used on the account is a random email, maybe I forgot the password but haven't been able to recover the email. It's true about the potential for account lockout if the email I'm using is someone else's active email, but 1 year has passed with no issues with that email. I highly doubt it's a random email, but I just wanted to be on the alert by quickly replacing the email.

there is a thread just for what you need Stake your Bitcoin address here
I guess you can do it again there, in case you ever need it. make sure you use a secure address to which you will always have access. Staking Bitcoin address is probably the fastest way in account recovering.

As I said above, I have sign message in that thread in the past because I believe it would be very useful to verify account ownership in case of hacking or other account related issues. Looks like I'll do it again now from the same address but with a little extra message [reason for email change], maybe something like this: You can verify it for me.

Code:
-----BEGIN BITCOIN SIGNED MESSAGE-----
I'm _BlackStar from the bitcointalk.org forum. Today is Friday 12.11.2021. Signed the message for the purpose of changing the old email from the bitcointalk account [_BlackStar] to the new email.

Since you have signed a message then you can recover your account if ever it is getting hacked, stolen. You should change it right away to the email address you have registered for further assurance of your account. Most of the recovered accounts didn't need to PM the mod or admin. It is mostly done by signing a new message with the same address you used to sign a message before and the6 updated the thread that it is now recovered.

I never changed my email since I registered as far as I remember but I used to have access to the email even now after the years and Its one of my secondary emails.

If its your email then there will be no problem at all because you no need that email until you know the password of your account. But its better to change the email right away for your bitcointalk's account security for doing that you no need to access your old email you can do it under your settings itself as I said earlier.

Thanks, I'll be doing it soon and I'll also keep this thread for future reference in case something happen with this account [hopefully not].

Findingnemo, I will gladly consider your advice but only if I really can't find a way to recover my forgotten password for the email I'm currently using on my bitcointalk account.

That's not really useful for recovery purposes: if your account gets hacked, the first thing the hacker will do is delete this post.
That's why posts get quoted in the "Stake an addy"-topic.

I've quoted your posts there.

To change your mail you don't need to sign a message, you can do it from your profile. I changed my mail though I have access to my primary mail due to a privacy issue. The staked address will help you to recover the account, but if you have access to your registered mail then it would speed up the recovery process. I have an idea though I am not sure it will work perfectly, something is better than nothing.

Since you staked your address, change your email from your profile. Sing a message from your staked address with detailed information about the changed email. Hide a part of email like yourname........@gmail.com. Then create a thread on the reputation board, ask someone to quote the post so that the hacker couldn't delete or edit the quoted post. And lock it for future reference. It will prove at least the email was changed by the original user. I believe that would help speed up your recovery process in case of a hack.

I'm not 100% sure that the email I used on the account is a random email, maybe I forgot the password but haven't been able to recover the email.
Because you said that you're not 100% sure if it's a random email or not, then I suggest you recover it first instead of having to replace it with another email. But you can change it any time you want and I don't think the forum will ban you just because of a change in email. If you are the original owner of the account then you can surely sign message and verify ownership easily.

You can verify it for me.

Code:

I believe it would be preferable to note the change of email address (both old and new) in your signed message for future reference? Something along those lines;

Quote
I'm _BlackStar from the bitcointalk.org forum. Today is Friday 12.11.2021. Signed the message for the purpose of changing the old email from zxxxxxxx@gmail.com to bxxxxx@gamil.com for the bitcointalk account [_BlackStar] to the new email.
For privacy: don't post your email addresses. But you can sign it, keep it, and only post the signature now. That way, you can always prove it existed already and provide the message itself if ever needed.

That's not really useful for recovery purposes: if your account gets hacked, the first thing the hacker will do is delete this post.
That's why posts get quoted in the "Stake an addy"-topic.
If hackers ever do, they may forget that Loyce.club and ninjastic.space have archived them for the community.

I've quoted your posts there.
You really are like an AI that knows what loopholes for other possibilities to occur. Thanks for that.

-snip-
Of course this would be another useful suggestion, might be considered as well.

Because you said that you're not 100% sure if it's a random email or not, then I suggest you recover it first instead of having to replace it with another email.
I have, but so far it hasn't worked. Will continue to try it in the next few days.

-snip-
I'll give it a try, display the first email in the message and cover a portion of the new email. Great idea for me to do.

For all your answers, I am very grateful, I feel better now.

I have sign message before and if needed then I can do it again now with a little extra reason about changing bitcointalk account email. Thanks for your responese, but I'm expecting more now.
There is no harm to change your email address if you are real owner of the account.

Email is not all factors that can be used when you need to recover your account but if you have it as one of factors, why do you skip it?
  • Email address
  • Sign message and staked address
  • Other things would be asked by admins along the recovery procedure as well.

You need to change your email address associated with your account. This is what you need to do and you need to do it immediately. This is your answer.

You can stake your address, but you need to change your email address. Until you change your email address, your account will be vulnerable to being hacked by whoever owns that email. They have probably also been receiving emails from the forum intended for you, so they are aware of your account being associated with their email.

Although I may be wrong, I believe that a signature is sufficient for someone to decrypt a signed message. However, if a signature alone does not grant access to the content of the signed message, it would be good ideal.

I believe it would be preferable to note the change of email address (both old and new) in your signed message for future reference? Something along those lines;

For privacy: don't post your email addresses. But you can sign it, keep it, and only post the signature now. That way, you can always prove it existed already and provide the message itself if ever needed.

For all of you who answered after this post then I must inform you that I have changed the email of this account with a new email. As I said in this post, I'm not entirely sure that it was a random email that I never signed up for because I completely forgot. Have tried several times to recover email but unfortunately I can't find the correct password.

So if [probably not] the old email is already owned by someone else [random email] then I can be able to verify that this is me [the original owner of the _BlackStar account]. Thank you all for your answers, I will lock this thread for future reference.
